1. The first amp I ever gigged with/owned was a Hartke B90 Great amp :-D Si
2. So m00sh is on his way to get the Compact from me. I've done 3 gigs with it and have enjoyed it very much actually, I think actually the true test will be how I feel when I plug my cab back in at the weekend! . I don't really have much to add to my initial thoughts (first post on this page), although I should probably outline that I used my Ashdown ABM EVO II 500 and MIA Jazz Standard with the cab. I'm going to echo stingrayfans words when he passed the cab to me of: "I'm going to miss it" . Based on this test, and Alex's new spec's (assuming the even lighter new cabs don't negate the structural integrity), I'd seriously consider the Compact. I'll reiterate that I enjoyed using it a lot more over 'The Big One'. Cheers Alex! Si

2009's gigs
Sitting here, getting over the excesses of the last two days - dropped onto this. I am amazed at some of the numbers here, with people holding down full time jobs and some on shifts!!! We did 20, which I think was 2 down on last year but 40, 50, 60 and way beyond!!!! I struggle to remember all of ours in one year, let alone some of the 100+ listed from some of you guys! Hats off to you. Now where is that gig diary????
Yeah.....don't remember them all, but they'll all written in the diary lol Si
4. I wouldn't be bothered at all about being 'seen' with a squier, if the player and tone is great, then no-one will notice or care whats on the headstock. I've got a Squier CV Jazz, and while it's not quite on par sound wise with my MIA Jazz (not much is in my opinion), the build quality is probably just as good. obviously the body wood is basswood as opposed to alder, but who can hear that lol. Whack some good pickups in the CV, and a great bass for not much money it would no doubt be!! I also have an A series Jap Squier Precision (ex-Bassassins), and although I haven't gotten round to making it gig-fit, I think it's gonna be ace. Also have a Squier Deluxe 5 string Jazz that definitly does the job, although I may sell it to fund a fretless jazz or a MIA standard 5er Si
5. The clifton is a completely passive bass, no control cavity, just one cable leading from the jack, to a small black node (the rechargable battery??), then to the bridge. Si
6. Yeah typical huh! Ah get Nik to come to wycombe, we'll all have a tea at mine Then I can nick the Little Giant off him lol Just PM'ing you bout the compact mate Si
7. Ah bum flufff!!!! If this falls through, I'll have it Si
8. Cool, have emailed him! I gigged the bass last night and noticed that the E & A strings are a lot quieter than the D & G strings, I've asked Mo whether that's down to the pickup or something else, like strings perhaps!? I believe it's fitted with Spirocores Si
9. If it's any consolation, I was only judging the Compact I've currently got on loan by sound anyway! The way I see it, it's both lighter and cosmetically less f@"*ed than my Ashdowns lol Si
10.
Summary part 2... Barefaced Fans...I like them. Others...Yeah, but I tested them and I didn't like them. God, stop hyping them up. Barefaced Fans...You didn't like them? Oh well, that's cool. You could give them a bit more time? No worries though, it's all subjective. Others...STOP IT! Stop trying to force Barefaced cabs down my throat. I can't stand any more hype! Barefaced Fans...Whoa! Chill out guys. I like mine, and I thought you would too. No big deal though. I know they have issues, but I am happy to compromise for the weight and tone. Others.. La La La La I can't hear you! It's the HYPE...HYPE...HYPE...I can't hear my self think any more!!!!! I tried these cabs along side every other cab in the world and if Alex hasn't compared them in one million live situations against the largest Ampeg/Berg/Eden/EBS rig then he is a fool and he is going to hell!! Bareface Fans...Okay, I'm getting worried about you now. Can I get you anything? DO, YOU, NEED, YOUR, MEDS? Others...but...but......but......FINNBASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Absolute genius! We like this! lol Si
11. Is it Happy Jack's Lightwave Sabre that you're getting? If so, it's a real beauty! Si
12. Is anyone going to Jon's? Wanna check up on my neck that's (hopefully) having a new truss rod? I don't wanna chase him, nor am I, but I wanna know how it's doing! lol Loving the fanned fret still, awaiting the pics! Si
13. Had the Compact for the first gig last night, pub setting, low ceiling, plenty of people (Richmond O'neills). I'll post some more in depth thoughts when i've done some more gigs with it. But first impressions are great! Enjoyed it a lot more than my two gigs with 'The Big One', perhaps it's just the ommision of the midrange driver. Had good comments from the rest of the band as well, especially the Drummer (who's a very good all-round musician, not just a tub-thumper...great ears). The venues I'm using this for though are quite different from the gigs I did with the Big One so it's a little bit of an unfair comparison perhaps. I have a silver hardcase that I carry my cables and Ashdown head around in and my cab always sits on top of that to raise it off the floor and closer to ear level. Because the Compact is taller than my Ashdown Mini48, my 'rig' was taller and therefore closer to my ears, and due to the 15 moving more air (I assume), I really felt the punch in my back....nice feeling! Comments included, "Full" & "Punchy". All my frequencies were there in abundance, never did I feel that I was lacking anything for using a 15" speaker!. The overall tone was a little bit different than my ashdown, not quite as tight sounding, but it didn't detract at all, like I said, still sounded nice and punchy....just different to what I'm used to. Anyway, gig 2 tonight Si
14. I've tried one (I think......the one with 5 'styles' on a rotary control)!? Sounds great Not very loud at all IMO Si

2009's gigs

109 for 2009, that's two bands (although FSOF only did one tour and a few one-off shows). So mostly pubs/functions/deps etc Got 86 booked for 2010, but hopefully that will be more more more!! I'm very much hoping to secure the (EUB) bass chair for a singer/songwriter in London, which could lead to some nice tours abroad.....massive fingers crossed Si
16. Because I'd like photos first and foremost, not a lovely conversation! Si
17. Hey all, I just borrowed a Clifton EUB from a friend of mine for some shows and he informed me that the pickup is "one of those ones you plug in and charge"!? A cable came in the pocket that is jack plug to mains, and he said something along the lines of "plugging it in for 30 secs charges in for around 3 hours". Is this kind of pickup ringing any bells with anyone? Anywhere I can get some more info? Cheers Si
18.
deffo a refin though right?
Well either the guy doesn't know what he's got and it's a super rare custom colour. Or he knows what he's got and he's priced it as a refinish, which a grand is about right IF everything else is original (point about the nut noted). He hasn't even emailed me back though, I asked for neck pocket photos (for refinish clues), neck stamp photos, and serial number/neck plate photos. So either he's ignoring me or he's taking his time getting me photos lol Si
19.
Ashdown probably think that their target market would be impressed by that kind of thing
You are, of course, the one who posted about it though! Si
20.
this is beautiful! hopefully my tax rebate will be here before this goes!
I predict April for your tax rebate Si
21. I think a lot of it is just what people are used to in their everyday lives. A human expects something lightweight to be flimsy, our brain fills in the gaps in infomation. Im borrowing the southern compact currently and I shan't be pulling any punches with it. Two of the three gigs I'll be using it for will be loading in and out of a van, and I shall be treating it like I do my heavy Ashdowns. So we'll see, looking forward to it after my few gigs with 'The Big One' Si
