1. My first ever gig was Travis Tritt @ Shepherds Bush Empire.....yes it was with my dad, guessing I was about 12 or 13 It was LOUD, but fun! Si
2. Agreed, but part of me feels that small cabs should be light, I wouldn't mind so much if it was a big-ass cab lol. I've picked up Epifani 4x10's that are lighter! The Mini 15 though is pretty light Si
3.
If no takers this weekend, I will be getting the soldering iron out and selling the bass (with original Fender control plate/pots) and the Audere pre-amp separately
It kinda sounds like this is gonna be your best bet to get this sold Good luck dude! Si
4. The only gripe I have with the 4x8 really is the fact that mine isn't one of the newer neo ones, and so it's a lot heavier than it looks like it shoud be lol Si
5. The few bravewoods I've seen have had Fender Decals, although he says he doesn't apply them. odd Si
6. I love my mini cabs, BUT they come into their own when using them through a full PA. If you're using the PA for just vocals and relying on backline for instrument amplification in the room, you might be better going for front ported cabs. Having said that, this is because I usually just use the 4x8 on its own for those smaller gigs. If you're planning on using the full stack all the time, you may side-step those issues. Si
7. So, some of you may remember my Drop C Jazz bass that I have been using with my band FSOF, the neck was made my Mr Shuker due to some slightly odd specs I had at the time (pictured in my avatar) Recently I decided to put the bass back into standard tuning, which obviously involved some truss rod adjustment. Now, I really don't consider myself a novice when setting up a bass, I've done all my current batch, with great results. However, on this job, I think I just got a bit too complacent considering the difference with changing between long term drop tunings and just tweaking the rod for string gauges etc. I don't feel I was forcing the rod, but clearly I was. Stopped on a setting after some previous small turns and settling, tuned to pitch, played for 10 seconds and *CRACK*. Thats it, gone. Now to be honest, I'm not one for beating myself up for ages over something like this. The bass & neck have done so many shows, so from a monetary point of view, it's earned its keep. What I am REALLY angry about is that my complacency with a process that should have the up-most respect at all times, has negated the hard and talented work of Jon, as well as wasting some lovely woods! I'm currently emailing Jon to see if there's a solution, but suffice to say, I'm suitably embarrassed to be telling him the deal! Meh! Si
8. Can't the kid sleep in the speaker cabinet? I jest of course, just seen this, good on you man for doing a very admirable thing. Good luck with the sale! Si
9. My Mini 15 is exactly the same enclosure size as my mini 4x8, I don't need to stack it on it's side to have the 4x8 on top! I love that particular stack, big tone, but still a controlled sound. Si
10.
that's alright then, because that's a sterling!
Hahaha, yeah yeah alright then, just goes to show how little I do take notice of them lol. Have a free bump Si
11. I don't normally take any notice of StingRays, but that is a particularly nice finish!! Good luck with the sale! Si
12. I too have a Precision fitted with a Jazz neck, not an issue at all, very tight neck pocket/joint too! Si
13. I'm going to sit down and do a proper comparison like OTPJ did, but what I will say at this point is that my Am Standard sounds pretty different to my Squier CV. The Squier sounds fine, but the Am sounds more 'complete', there is a wider range of frequencies in the sound, more clarity across the two pickups, it sounds a LOT livelier than the Squier. So from that point of view, my Am standard sounds better! BUT: 1 - It's subjective 2 - I would expect a better sounding bass from a more expensive bass Si
14.
HOWEVER because this 'is' Fender Masterbuild then they can charge wtf they like. Truth be told Fender couldn't possibly justify that price tag for the component parts, even inc' the wages for a Master [s]Screwer-together[/s] I mean builder.
Surely this also includes similar 'builders' such as Lakland that, although using great woods, are just mass produced bodies being 'screwed together' And if we assume that master builders at Fender are making the basses by hand then 'screwing them together', then guys like Coppola are charging the same amount of money for the same prank . Si
15. Do they do MIM Millers? I thought they were American or Japanese, never really paid them much attention. To be fair to the custom shop/masterbuilt Fenders, I think part of the glory of owning one of them is that you own an almost one off piece by a company that largely deals in hundreds of thousands of units. Luthiers like Shuker etc are renowned for one off pieces, so that almost devalues it, if you get my meaning. This is of course a very steep price for ANY bass imo, when I was looking at Custom Shops, I was looking at prices that equated to just over a quarter of this MM, and although I'm a massive Fender fan, I don't believe they've ever made a decent preamp. Si
16. You may well have noticed that I've posted the below picture in the competition before, I'm not re-entering it as it were, but decided I wanted to join in on the 'Tie-Breaker' game, and needed some visual stimulous. And so: Barefaced - Putting the 'Freak' back into 'Frequency Response' Hopefully this will mean that I will now win, and I can put the cab next to the other most important thing I've won......my late eighties 'Headmasters series' Scorpinok Transformers toy.Oh yes! Si
17. I tried the one they currently have at The Bass Merchant, and from someone who really doesn't get on with Active basses, this had a LOT of tone!. Beautiful neck to play as well. And looked great!! Si
18. My band tunes to C standard (C, F, Bb, Eb), I use a 4 string bass with 45-105 strings, low action/not sloppy at all (for a low tuning), and no need to recut the nut. How? Higher Tension strings, I'm sure other brands do them!?...perhaps, but give Malcolm at Newtone a call, tell him your tuning and preferred guage, and he'll sort you out a tension that works for you! Si p.s. I may sticky a downtuning thread....mainly so I can stop going over the same ground lol Is there a definitive one do people think?
19.
As far as I understand it, a DoveTail (as Andy.T says) is a specific type of neck joint, mainly found on classical/acoustic guitars where the join across the "shoulders" of the instrument tapers down in a sort of "V" shape. As for "duck tails", I can only assume he means an almost "surformed" V shape which would indicate a weakness in the structure of the wood...? Edit: Okay, I just did some reading & it's where they add a strengthening piece of wood in the transition area between the headstock and the 1st fret area of the neck. Basically, if you can see a "V" shape near where the neck ends and the headstock begins, it's been added during the manufacture process as a strength-adding piece of wood at a weak point, if I understand correctly.
But on a stock Fender?? Si
20. I definitly know where you're coming from! When I started out It was all about modern designs, tiny body shapes, hated trad. shapes etc etc. As I've grown up, I have definitly matured and mellowed in my tastes, Fender designs, Old school hollowbodies and the like. Haven't found a preference for old tube amps though, as reliability is still important to me haha. But yeah, all but two of my seven basses are Jazz basses, with the other two being a Precision and a Stingray....so hardly uber modern there . I have one 'vintage' bass, I have an ever increasing love for old fenders, but I don't think I'd limit myself to just using them, my '73 is lovely, but my 2003 Jazz is the benchmark for ALL basses I now try. I just bought a new Squier Classic Vibe and that is superb. I'm also perving over a 1969 Jazz (lots of bunce). Hmmmm Si
21.
I think you may be confusing this with the Woodpecker which can indeed be found in-cider tree.
Pure Genius! For the sake of the thread.....no idea what a duck-tail is where necks are concerned! Si
22. Hopefully Ped might be able to give me a lift! But any backup lifts are welcome....I would obviously pay my way! Hopefully see you there! Si
