[I'm gonna have to start putting this answer in my signature lol] I currently tune Drop C Standard for my band FSOF and use string gauges 45-105, with similar tension and action to standard tuning. It's as much (if not more) to do with the core thickness, thicker core, more tension! Try giving Malcolm at Newtone Strings a call, tell him your preferred gauge (what you find comfortable), the tuning you wish to use, and he'll sort you out a tension that works best! Oh and they cost no more than a set of Elite/Rotos Si

Not so much me, but my mother! Was having a quick chat about music with Richard Bona (as you do) at one of his shows at Pizza Express Jazz club in soho, pretty nervous you know, and my mum comes up and says to me mid-conversation.... "Tell Richard how many basses you have Simon" She obviously had the best intentions, and was just trying to try and make me look like a 'serious bassist in the eyes of Mr Bona'......but I probably went a little red lol Si

An Alleva in Henley?? Just down the road from me?? Well OK then! Si

There is no distinct note between any note on the fretboard, certainly not in traditional western tunings at least. I'm not sure I see the point in 'walking' between a semi-tone, but whatever works for you Si

Fantastic player, fantastic song-writer, some great views on the business side of things, beautiful gear colleciton, Scientologist oh well 4 out of 5 ain't bad Si

Hi guys! I have what is basically a P/J creme set of pickup covers that I'll send out free with, lets say, a £2 donation to Basschat. I'll split of course, with each cover only requiring a £1 donation Cheers Si GONE pending

You may remember this 'build': http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=5336&hl=Encore Well I got a little bored of only using the bass as a 'home' bass, so to make it more giggable (for me), I went and added a Dimazio Model J to match the Model P already installed. BEFORE: AFTER: Not great pics, but you get the idea Can't wait to gig it on the weekend! Cheers to Howard (Bass Doc) for the pickup and Mike Walsh for the work Si Edit: Oh and the placement of the J p'up is loosely based on photos I sourced of Sadowsky P/J's, with a little left to Mike's discretion
Si, I take it that the DiMarzios have a good powerful output? Pete
Yes mate, I find them very powerful! That was actually the main part of the spec I was interested in. I was using an 18v Active bass for my band, but wanted a Passive solution instead, so put a Jazz bass together and dropped the UltraJazzes in. Have absolutely no want to go back to active now for that particular project, the UJ's sound fantastic. Si

I know a guy in Nottingham......or just outside I think, gimme a PM and I'll give you his number. He's already doing a covers band, but I don't know how busy they are! Si
-
Ah ok, well then yes, they may be poor when used passively perhaps. That is certainly the problem with pickups like Bartolinis that really need a preamp to shine. Si
-
I've had some very nice results from my Dimarzio Ultrajazzes! Check them out Never used SCN's in anger I have to say, but I wouldn't have thought they'd be too shabby, I assume the jazz you have is an 'active deluxe' of some sort!? Si

I'm just gonna pop this over to the Available/Wanted section Good luck Steve Si

I believe the Vigier was new, they had maybe 5 or so there, with the one fretless, and they all looked in spanking-new condition. Si

I only really get there a couple of times a year when I'm visiting my parents, but still nice to sit down and try some gear that I wouldn't normally be able to. Was interested in checking out a Shuttle 6.0, so sat down with that through an Ampeg Classic 410. Obviously trying something in a shop is nothing like giving it gig time, and I don't think I'd buy something until trying it a some shows, but I was fairly impressed with it. I could get some nice tones from various basses with the EQ pretty much flat, which is a big plus point in my books. Basses tried: Overwater 4 w/ DR pinks Overwater 6 Lakland Hollowbody 4 w/ flats Vigier Passion metal fretless 4 Levinson Blade 4 This is probably heresey, but I really didn't think much of ther Overwaters, impeccibly made obviously with beautiful woods (especially the 6), but just very average sounding in my opinion. The 6 did sound nicer than the 4. I can't quite remember what model they were, either Progress's or Perceptions, perhaps someone knows what's in stock there currently. The passive lakland was very cool, if I was playing some roots music or down-and-out rock, I'd seriously consider one, it was a newer one with the Chisonic pickups. I could dial in huge dub sounds by soloing the neck pickup, with almost vintage P/J sounds with the bridge solo'd....albeit with flatwounds. The Vigier is obviously in a bit of a league of it's own with regards to spec and I've never gotten on with the Vigier preamp, but then it's probably something that needs more than 10mins to work with. The metal fingerboard wasn't as radical sounding as I imagined, but was still a pleasure to play. But the curveball for me was the Levinson Blade, bearing in mind I'm really not an 'active' player, this 2 band 'superjazz' was fantastic. Probably played this for the longest simply because it sounded great instantly, not much tweaking needed at all. Great weight, not too light like the Overwater 4, so it felt substantial but comfortable. Fantastic neck, very fast and great fretwork!. Wasn't enjoying the gold hardware, but to be honest, the bass was so nice, I'd overlook it!. I'd seriously consider this if I needed slightly more modern tones than my passive Jazzes can offer. So yeah, had a coffee, had to scold myself in the 3rd person for resting my foot on the cab whilst playing ("you don't own this Simon" lol), and generally and a fun time, as always very welcomed by the shop Cheers Si

I wasn't playing last night, but went to see Andy Fairweather-Low. Great gig with Dave Bronze on bass, great player with some spot on harmonies too! Si

Help! Do you have a popular bass and ability to record it decently?

Good call Matt, no point in letting a Bass go for less than you're comfortable with. It is a bit of a funny market, the Vintage one, things sell just for what people want to pay for them....so it becomes a very subjective area with regards to original parts etc. In any case, while you wait, it may be worth trying to source parts from around 1964 to 'restore' the bass, you can never get the finish back obviously, and so you'll always be looking at around half of what a fully original '64 would be, but by adding other original '64 parts back onto the bass, it will no-doubt add value! Good luck Si
