1. 'Horse Hunter' by Dillinger Escape Plan and before that was 'All For You' by Wallis Bird! Si
2. Mudvayne do well enough that way! But yeah, if the guy was any kind of decent guy, he'd honor the gig and leave after that...basic etiquette! Si
3.
If you have time, Newtone strings can handwind a set of strings for you in the standard string gauges you normally use but with a higher tension core so that you can detune without having to take a file to your nut. Delivery is normally a few weeks but price is comparable to standard decent quality strings
+1 I tune to Drop C standard in my band (C, F, Bb, Eb) and use Newtone High Tension strings, because of the higher tension I can use 45-105 on a 34" scale neck and still get a tension and action similar to that of a standard tuned bass! And all for the price of a set of Elites or Rotos Malcolm is a great guy, and if you just tell them the tuning you're using, they'll work out a tension that'll work for you and your scale length. Good luck Si
4. So it's the Shandys you're gonna blame when you see your UK mobile to US mobile phone bill? lol There was a big 'ol interview with him about all of this in one of the bass rags, quite an interesting read, he seems to genuinely care about what players really think, which can only reflect well in the gear! Si
5. So ok, Bass all setup, work area cleared, computer de-fragged. Have some photos of the 'setup': The Bass: OLP MusicMan Stingray with Schaller tuners, Bartolini Humbucker, 18v 2band East preamp with active/passive push/pull pot, (tuned C, F, Bb, Eb) with Newtone high tension 45-105 strings The DI: Sansamp Programmable Bass DI, photographed here with the 'SVT' setting The Preamp: Focusrite Platinum TwinTrak Pro I'm thinking at this point that I'll save the two new 9volts I've got for my bass and just record passive, let the sansamp do all the work. Anybody have any views on active basses into active DI boxes? Si
6.
Seeing as you mentioned it. Your web pages take *ages* to load (I didn't check why but I will if you like), the picture is missing and the show dates are a year old. I conclude your band is no longer in existence (if I bothered to wait for the page to load that is, which many won't). Whatever else you do, keep it simple, keep the information easy to find and don't do anything that'll make the punters stop looking.
A sign of the severe lack on traffic going through it, whereas the myspace is updated daily if not hourly (much easier and quicker than standard websites) and has enough consistent traffic to keep us in the top 15 unsigned 'progressive' bands on myspace, we've previously been top 5 for weeks on end....no mean feat! I'm not bragging about 'how big we are' (because we're not), just commenting on the fair amount of consistent traffic going through the myspace. When the album is complete, the website will be revamped with some relevant artwork and other bits and pieces, but will most probably just link directly to the myspace! Oh and with regards to loading times...the myspace profile loads perfectly quickly on my lil 'ol laptop Si
7. My band still has a website, a .com, but it gets next to no traffic. We advertise it along with the myspace address and myspace takes all the hits! Regardless of how long the 'fad' has left in it, I'd rather spend those 2 years taking advantage of it rather than flogging the current dead horse that is standard band websites, and missing out on all the potential publicity! Si
8. Myspace & Facebook!! as if anyone looks at standard band websites anymore lol Si
9.
They look like rotosound Piano Strings where just the core goes over the bridge - not the same as tapered.
Ya learn something everyday! Si
10. Ahhh good, the London show is on a Monday....it's in the diary! It's the day after the 'London Tattoo Convention' weekend, so might just stay in town Si
11. By 'top-load', do you mean something like this?: And yeah, I mentioned tapered strings, although I don't know much about them. There's a review of an F-Bass in last months 'Bass Guitar Magazine', and that had some crazy tapered strings on it! Here it is: Si p.s I've just literally noticed that the F-bass is using that HipShot bridge.....a solution paul?? That bridge with some tapered strings, or at least a tapered F#
12. We're recording in a number of different places actually. The guitars and drums were recorded at our guitarists studio in Denham, South Bucks. The vocals will be done there as well. The bass parts will be done in my humble little home studio, but the raw audio of Sansamp into Focusrite into Cubase will be great, and we can Re-Amp if it's not quite right. Then all those parts are being sent to Acle's studio in Milton Keynes for his production magic! As of yet, I'm not sure where it's being mixed and mastered, the former probably in Denham or Milton Keynes, but the latter definitly somewhere and someone seperate. Have a 'Writing Session' video: Si
13. Paul here is a good mate of mine, I'm glad that people just suggested the two things I did....makes me feel warm and.....well....right lol I know Dood uses Darklord strings on Doodle (his 7 string paul), but I pointed him in Dood's direction more for advice on bridges. Si
14. The guitar parts were recorded through a 'Valve Company' 3/100 head (http://www.the-valve.com/3100.html , check Adam out in the 'artists' section) & Marshall 4x12 into the same two channel Focusrite that i'll be using, and then into Logic 7. The signal was split (hence the 2 channel Focusrite), so everything they recorded also ran a clean signal to another track for any further re-amping possibilities! Re-amping will be through any number of amazing bits of software the producer (Acle of Fell Silent) has to hand via Nuendo....don't ask me lol. But he also has Diezel and Engl heads/cabs handy as well. Si
15. So I figured that I might as well keep a bit of a recording diary while I undertake the bass parts for my band's debut album! If you haven't had a listen to some of the pre-production demos, check out www.myspace.com/firstsignsoffrost. For the purpose of you knowing what I'm doing, here is a list of songs that are making an appearance on the, as yet untitled, LP. In no particular order: The Saviour Finding The Bomb Through The Exterior Crosses (Jose Gonzalez cover) This Is A Fraud Expert In Trickery Wire Forms Sing Sing Ain't My Style Day Of The Collapse By Virtue Untitled 2 (no live bass, all programmed) Drums and guitars are already done tracking, and once I'm finished with my parts, all the raw instrument audio is being sent to the 'producer' for re-amping and pimping etc. Then the vocals get recorded, then it gets mixed & mastered etc. I've borrowed a SansAmp Programmable Bass DI to run into a Focusrite pre, I'll be using my 'ThingRay' with Newtone Strings as my new Drop C Jazz probably won't be ready, the neck is still being built. So yeah, watch this space over the next few weeks! Tonight is about setting up my ThingRay, changing strings and getting a feel for the SansAmp. If anyone has any questions about the process, or anything really....or better yet, advice, then this is the thread for it! Si p.s. For those interested, the album will be in the shops when it's released, no date is set yet.
16. +1 for having it stripped & refinished! Either do it yourself and watch the bass sell fast(er), or knock the price down accordingly so someone else can do it! Good luck! Si
17.
This your originals band - or a covers off shoot? He should have offered you some Dragon's Den cash and done a double signing with Hamfat, or whatever they were called.
This was the covers band, it's completely separate from FSOF, no overlapping members other than me! It wasn't a business do, it was all friends and family, so I refrained from mentioning anything to do with his work etc.....was all just about having a laugh....and he did, he's pretty funny! Si
18. Did a gig for Peter Jones (Dragons Den) last night, was his sister in law's 50th! Really nice guy.....huge!!, must have been 6'7" or 6'8" He was really complimentary of the band, in particular me.....which I found odd lol, one of the richest men in britain knows how to tell bass players apart haha! But I'm not complaining, he must see a LOT of function bands....not that we're a 'function' band in the traditional sense of the term. Anyway, really good evening, the crowd were up for it and were having a good laugh! Lovely! Si
19. A new pang for an early 70's Jazz requires me to bump this! Si
20. I've got a Dimarzio Model P (DP122 ?) in my Precision, and yeah, it sounds fantastic! It will indeed give you a higher output than the stock pickup! I'm a bit of a 'tard when it comes to electronics, someone else will be along to comment about that I'm sure! Si
21.
...On Saturday one of the singers swung her arm back too far and clouted me in the jubblies while we were playing. Luckily her aim was off.
Wow, she's either tiny, or your jubblies are quite high!? Si
22. I move around as much as I can, because thats what the music dictates, it's not a choice! It just happens Sometimes it compromises some playing, but who cares, I'm having fun, and an audience want to see a good show, not a note perfect rendition of whatever the tune is! Si
23. I'm not sure what the issue is? I know it's not what we're talking about, but most commercial releases will be multi-tracked, and everyone will do their parts separately! Even with most 'live' studio recordings I've done, they'll be a guide vocal, but re-recorded afterwards/another time. I've never heard of a band needing the singer to 'play to', a band should be able to create it's own dynamics that the singer can play off. If it's the only way forward, just record the music and do the vocal another time, if you're well rehearsed, it'll sound fine! Good luck Si
24. So who's going from west london, south bucks kinda way?? Shared lifts etc? Si
25. Wow, Bona & Nitti...... although i'm confused...is that for this year? or 2009? Si
