  1. I’d probably say the work involved is more than worth it, just buy a 33” scale bass Si
  2. My advice is to unlearn what you’ve learned about common band interaction. Typically we very much rely on the drummer to dictate time, forget that, and assume that’s he’s stretching time, displacing any drum hits at any given time (so not giving you a steady pulse). What this means, is that you rely on your internal timing! If you know what the timing is, you should be able to play the song, start to finish with the drummer playing absolutely anything, out of time, polyrhythms etc. So yes, learn to count, but you’ll quickly just feel the pulse and as long as that happens, you’ll need the drums less, and probably actually hear what he’s doing against the beat a lot better Si
  3. Added my favourite video made by Knobs, love his vids! Also shows how you can connect your guitar/bass via the audio in Si
  4. Hi, So both Impulse and Automap is confirmed as working with High Sierra: https://support.novationmusic.com/hc/en-gb/articles/115005077329--Are-Novation-products-compatible-with-macOS-10-13-High-Sierra- So I suspect it’s just a setup issue, sorry you’ve had a tough time so far. Did you purchase the Impulse new? If so, there should have been documentation on how to set it up within the box. Please do call Tech Support tomorrow (or when you can, 9:30am-6pm Mon-Fri), I’m certain they’ll have you set up in no time at all! Si
  5. Hey, Si from Novation here. The Launchkeys are optimised for Ableton, but will work perfectly well with almost any DAW using the InControl mode. Here’s some resources from our website: DAW setup guide: https://d2xhy469pqj8rc.cloudfront.net/sites/default/files/novation/downloads/10606/launchkey-mk2-daw-setup-guide.pdf Manual (page 10 talks about InControl mode): https://d2xhy469pqj8rc.cloudfront.net/sites/default/files/novation/downloads/10577/launchkey-mk2-ug-en_0.pdf If you need any further technical advice, feel free to contact our UK based technical & customer support who can talk you through any further setup questions you might have: +44 1494 462246 And absolutely, learning piano will only ever help you understand music in a deeper way, having a positive effect on your bass playing, certainly did for me. Can’t go wrong :). Just remember that the Launchkeys are USB only, so if you want to use one at the same time as your Scarlett, you’ll need to ensure you have two spare USB ports Si // Novation Media Relations
  6. There are different eras (Octaver & Octave), different places of construction (Japan then Taiwan), a tiny variation in colour throughout the years, but no change in circuit (therefore sound) whatsoever. The two that are referenced here are the same pedal (ie both made in Taiwan), you choose to pay what you choose to pay Si
  7. Because we’re not Jeff and off practicing music 😂 Si
  8. Nope, you can have whatever opinion you want, I was simply giving my opinion that I consider it lazy when someone calls something 'twoddle', when that thing is objectively only possible through years of hard work and great skill & dedication, especially when that person invested 5 mins of a 2 hour performance. I shouldn't think you care either, so we're both cool Si
  9. To be fair, my only comment to you was about history of music being largely derivative, Sheeren isn't doing anything differently, Adam Neely did a fantastic video about it, well worth a watch. I'm not angry, fully accept people have different opinions to me, certainly don't care if people like Jacob's (or any other) music.....but just think it's a shame when people comment on others hard work with incredibly reductionist comments after giving it very very little time to explore it. I'm not angry.....just disappointed 🤣 Si
  10. And sorry, I'm not saying everyone should like the music, obviously not.....but calling it pretentious twoddle is like me saying the same thing about reading 5 mins of a quantum physics book. Try lasting more than 5mins with your musical endeavours, try watching the whole show, even if you don't like it, you might learn something! Si
  11. Which is what the history of western music is based on so...... It actually makes me sad when a thread about an incredible talent (who is 23 years old for goodness sake, he was doing Berklee masterclasses at 20!) gets lambasted by people who: A) Don't like Jazz B) Watch 5 minutes of one program If you don't like Jazz, don't comment unless you're actively appreciating the technical ability and hard work someone has put in. Letting people know you actively don't like the subject your being negative about doesn't really help the conversation. "God I hate driving......this <well spec'd, reasonably priced, popular> car is awful isn't it!". If you do like Jazz, but don't like seeing how someone attempts to entertain a sold out Albert Hall audience, dig a little deeper: These are bands that he has curated, who have come together to play his songs and arrangements, he's the band-leader. So yes, they are obviously contributing a lot, but they wouldn't be in that particular gig if it weren't for Jacob, he's creating jobs innit. Si
  12. If you want to drop some cost but still keep the professional look/sound etc, then the sE Electronics V3 mics are very cool £50 each plus whatever educational discount you can get from dealers: https://www.seelectronics.com/se-v3-dynamic-microphone/ Si
  13. It is amazing what you can learn in a week when you really apply yourself, obviously it's not engrained in you after a week, but you take a lot of 'to-do' work and inspiration away with you to crack on with. I've not been to the Players School, but did the Wooten Woods Music camp near Nashville and got a LOT out of 1 week! Definitely explore these types of courses if you're thinking about it. Welcome Jeff! Si
  14. Well if you’re ever down in Herts, let me know Si
  15. Just finished the Proms show. Absolutely incredible, great pacing with amazing dynamics, harmonically and rhythmically complex whilst also being beautifully sparse in places. Normally i’d take unbridge at people saying he plays it safe.....far from it, as mentioned, the harmony and rhythms that weave their way through his songs and arrangements are definitely not ‘safe’.......that said, they are safe because he’s utterly in control, nothing is an accident, everything is constructed perfectly! Yet he still manages to create the magic that other artists only sometimes stumble on by being ‘on the edge’. If there were a couple of low-lights, it was Every Little Thing She Does and All Night Long, boring choices, but lots of amazing ideas within them to unpack and learn from! Yeah, amazing on the whole. Hideaway (song number 2) was a particular highlight! Wish I could have been there! Si
  16. S’all good bud, no need to apologise. Si
  17. Ah I see :). Yes as you’ve probably worked out, this is your straight software playback from master 1-2, and if you want to build different types of monitor mixes, you select ‘Custom Mix’ from the dropdown under each output on the left Si
  18. This is not untrue! Si
  19. Excellent choice In the interest of transparency, I work for Focusrite / Novation, so always interested to see what people are using! Cheers Si
  20. I’m always having a spy to see what interfaces, controllers and synths people are using 😂 Si
  21. I suspect that might have been the sting :).... let’s hope anyway! Si
  22. I don’t think he’s changing the rules, as has been mentioned, he’s building on a lot of ideas that have gone before. However!!!!....his interpretation of those ‘rules’ and theories is wholly individual, a pure joy to listen to him explain theory and musical ideas. I actually think he’s incredibly important for music at the moment, he’s completely invigorated an entire generation of theory lovers. I don’t agree that he is danger of ‘falling’ into easy listening, he’s way too in control of everything he creates. If he writes something ‘easy listening’, it’s pure choice, and that’s fine. I actually find it refreshing where someone writes music that is beautiful and relatively accessible, instead of writing what they are technically capable of all the time. Si
  23. Yeah very well! Had it strung with flats for a bit, recorded well (on the new JoCee EP), but wasn’t quite right, so put some La Bella rounds back on and it’s awesome! Very happy Si
