    Any comments on price I find difficult to swallow with flats a little.......put them on....leave them on forever, that's why I like them vs roundwounds. Flats just get better lol Si

    Flat/tapewound strings are your first port of call. But you’ve said that a ‘Sting’ bass gave you what you want.....so get one of them?! Si

    Not sure what people define as 'great bass tone', but what is important is having a tone that glues the rest of the band together, that fills the necessary sonic space and stays out of the way of other instruments.....that tone could be literally anything (depending on the musical context) and still be 'great'. So yes a 'complimentary' tone is incredibly important. Si

    Lakland would do that on a custom build if you sourced the pickups I believe. You'd essentially then have a US built 44-01 (ie two soap bars) Si

    All flats are technically 'tapewound', but with metal tape rather than nylon. As such, flats tend to refer to metal tapes and nylon (be it black, white etc) to nylon tapes. Si

    I certainly didn't mean to suggest this isn't a great deal, a new one would probably set you back about £2800 inc shipping & import duty/VAT. Hopefully it will come to the UK and then I'll get first dibs when it gets sold again lol Si

    Worth noting that a lot of Tapes can't be strung through-body.....so if you have a US Jazz (or similar) that allows for that, string it through the bridge instead. But as mentioned, much lower tension than Flats and Rounds. I've become very interested in trying the LaBella Gold White Nylons on my 5 String Lakland, they seem very cool. Si

    Tension has little to do with the gauge, it's the size of the core. Talk to Newtone Strings, they'll be able to sort a string that tunes to what you need it to, without flapping around, and not necessarily huge guages. When I had need for it, I was running Drop C Standard (C, F, Bb, Eb) in guages 45-105 with a tension similar to standard tuning. Obviously you can't tune this strings upto standard, they'd break, but worth setting a bass up for them if it's all you use. Si
