  1. I wonder whether having Jon chamber this body quite significantly (to reduce weight of course) would cost the same, more or less than having a new body made. Depends on if there are any other reasons for having a new body made, but may save you the annoyance of having to sell the body or whole bass. If you haven't already, might be worth bringing it up with him. Not that I know what other people want, but I fear you may struggle to sell a 13lbs Precision Si
  2. I'm sure I remember Doug confirming this exact thinking in his podcast interview with SBL. This topic (the original post mainly) basically highlights some peoples lack of understanding of what is sometimes necessary for full-time musicians to undertake, basically to monetise whatever you possibly can. Clearly there is a 'market' for his more esoteric solo performing, at trade shows, clinics etc etc, but as has been mentioned above, it probably represents a tiny percentage of the bass playing he undertakes daily. He's good at it, people will clearly pay him to do it, why wouldn't he play like that. In any case, the whole 'bass should stay in the low end' is the most boring, yet constantly visited, rhetoric going. These people are musicians, that they choose the bass guitar to represent their voice is a moot point. Those players will likely stick to a 'role' for a lot of their musical life, but who cares if they diverge if it's an enjoyable experience for them or someone else?! Si
  3. That's my understanding of how mine works. It was silent through the PA I should mention. Cheers Si
  4. I used mine last Friday for the first time (yup, probably 6months after I got it).....really good, very impressed! Si

    best value DAW

I think every DAW has it's 'intricacies', my most hated Reaper one is it's channel output routing, stupid compared to Logics (and most other DAWs) Si

    best value DAW

Reaper is excellent value for money, and I do use it sometimes, but I still gravitate towards Logic as a more intuitive DAW. Si
  7. I do it loads, for a multitude of reasons, it's just another technique to utilise, same as finger style, slap, pic, etc etc. As has been mentioned, it was actually the original way that Leo Fender assumed people would play the electric bass, why do you think the 'thumb' rest (tug bar) was originally below the strings? Because he envisaged that people would hook their fingers under it, and play with their thumb. Si
  8. SOLD As new, boxed with all packaging, bought as a backup to my other V7, but never used (or even taken out the house). Not much to say really, but it's a SM58 killer, all info here: https://www.seelectronics.com/se-v7-dynamic-microphone/ SOLD Si
  9. It looks absolutely massive lol. But very cool! Si
  10. I think Lull put a picture of the finished bass on Instagram btw Si
  11. Welcome from West Herts Si
  12. Oh man, not again!! Luckily I'm in no position whatsoever to think about this lol I almost bought this around 8 years ago, tried it in person etc........it's really really great! It is a body refin by Joe White but it has been worked around the original wear and 'damage' on the bass, so it's about as authentic a refin as you'll ever get! Si
  13. Canadian Forehead Experiment Wait.....don't use that, I want it Si
  14. Very cool, about 3 months longer than my US Lakland, but sounds like Mike himself puts everything together at the very least, even if he doesn't make all the parts?! Whereas US Laklands are 'team-built' I believe. Gonna be a beast! Si
  15. Hahaha, touché sir. Si
  16. Been playing my Lakland 55-01 almost exclusively over the last couple of weeks (through necessity for an upcoming gig), and it's just brilliant. These hit so far above their weight for the money!!

The US models have a much more vast selection of woods available to choose from, quarter-sawn necks (more stable) etc etc. But they can cater for a lot more than I think people realise, so for example; want your 55-02 but with two humbuckers instead of the J, or a P and a humbucker, or three humbuckers!?! They'll likely be able to hook you up with a custom 55-94. Want a passive 44-94 with a P/J setup, they'll build it.....that's what I got :). They built a very cool short-scale Decade with MM/J pickups for a guy in america, sonic blue colour, no scratch plate, looks like the lovechild of a 44-94 & a Decade, really cool.

Sure, they have amazing custom options etc, I mean more in terms of pure function. It's hard to beat the 55-02 for what I want in a 5 string, especially with the US pickups & pre-amp, it being pleckd, then getting installed/finished/QC'd in Chicago.

I am SURE if I had the spare cash I could easily find something truly amazing from Lakland USA!

Oh absolutely, don't get me wrong, the Skyline stuff, for the most part, is amazing if the spec fits your needs.  I would only 'upgrade' my 55-01 to a custom 55-94 with two humbuckers if I had a fair bit of money to burn.......which is never going to be the case I imagine haha, just because the 55-01 is excellent.

  17. How do you know it wasn't just a great sounding PA? Si
  18. Still not tempted at £399 Wonder if they're making a loss on them, if not, clearly Gibson are building them for next to nothing. That said, based on some of the stories coming out over the last couple of years, doesn't sound like 'USA built' doesn't mean much anymore when it comes to Gibson. Si
  19. Gotcha, thanks for clearing up Si
  20. Just to confirm though, your Jake has more frets, so it's closer to the 20th fret than your '71 P? Si
  21. Will be interesting to know! Si
  22. I'm not entirely sure to be honest, I simply asked for the P pickup in the standard position, I made an assumption that their design would be pretty true to the original P bass dimensions. Remember that many Jakes (your sunburst included), are 21 frets, as opposed to the 'classic' 20 frets. So visually, because the fingerboard will have an extra fret overhang, the pickup will look closer to the fingerboard. Si
  23. I"m not sure I've ever seen a bass that has the Precision pickup shunted out of position to maintain the spacing between pickups if the J is in 60's position?! Seems strange, I think most luthiers would understand that if someone ordered a P/J setup, they, at some point, would want a 'traditional' Precision sound.....not something closer to the neck. I guess they might be quite rare because many P/Js are just converted Ps anyway (people adding the jazz pickup). Whenever I've had a P/J made from scratch (a couple of different builds), I've always specified the P in the standard position and the J in 60's. Clearly both these basses (a Maruszczyk and a Lakland) will sound different to my '71 Precision with their Jazz pickups turned down, but there are so many variables at play that it's difficult to say what the extra pickup, even when off, would change. Si
  24. All I can tell you is that if I didn't have my Enabler tomorrow, I'd find another one to buy....over all the other stuff about at the mo. I love it's relative simplicity, excellent sounding EQ and doesn't try to cram everything in one box, which I usually leads to concessions (a top-mounted DI on the GK??? stupid IMO). The Palmer looks good to be fair (although the Fuzz/OD is likely a waste of space for most people), but I'd want to hear it first. Si
