1. Depends how you define groove I guess, if you want to tie it down to only beats played by a human (which I'd argue you'll never find specified in any definition of' Groove'), and their various nuances, fine, but you're missing out on a lot. I tend to apply it to anything that gives a sense of relatively consistent rhythm. There are videos on youtube of tractor engines creating great grooves for example. But for those who require to see live musicians and more drum hits to tell whether a song is decent or not, let's try this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bsnChs_9IDc I simply meant this as a decent example of 'slap' bass in a relatively recent, (very) popular song. It works, it's tasteful. Slap doesn't have to be machine gun 64th notes everywhere....that's just the taste of the player and the given musical context. I don't slap very often at all, I can....not the flashiest in the world....but I've genuinely NEVER been asked on a gig "oh, can you slap that part". Fun to practice, incredibly rare to get used in the musical situations I'm in. Nevermind lol Si
2.
I bet the Drum programmer had many long, sleepless nights, putting that detailed Rhythm track together.
Suits the song perfectly . Lot's of Motown is built over incredibly simple grooves, but we don't slag off Al Jackson Jr Si
3. Welcome to the mainstream: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nPvuNsRccVw Si
4. Pickup depends whether you want a 'vintage' P sound or something a little hotter/modern. Original JV pickup will give you the former, the a Dimarzio (I really like the model P) will give you the latter. Take it back to fretted, finish in a 60's Fender custom colour of your preference, job done. Si
5. Purely out of professional curiosity, what sold you on the Presonus over a Focusrite Clarett? Cheers Si
6. 18months after selling my Fodera, it felt like the right time to order something along similar lines. So here we are, first pic..... Alder body Indian Cedar top 3 piece Ash neck Mac Ebony fingerboard I'll leave the rest of the spec a mystery for now, two members are privy to it already, so they can't play Si
7. This and the Ebony headless Krell SC he's building are the ones I'm looking forward to seeing finished the most!! Si
8. Can't wait to see this one develop. I had the original Finn mentioned above from Ewan, however got sold when I was funding my Fodera purchase.....think it went north Wales way. Si
9. Also worth following Andy on Twitter, he often does evenings of myth debunking and fact checking surrounding XTCs past, recordings, who wrote what, fall-outs, make-ups etc. Very interesting Si
10.
Some pic's.... Also only just seen the colour thing. I really like the purple, but really, I don't mind what colour I get, whatever is to hand when you build 'mine' Cheers Si
11. Found this interesting article and thought some people might also find it interesting https://bulletproofmusician.com/why-is-it-so-important-to-record-yourself/ Si
12.
I suppose it depends on your nature. I'm particular about all aspects of the look of my basses as well as the tone.
So what if you found the perfect silk colour but they sounded crap, and the perfect sounding string were the worst coloured silk?! Si

15. Something with a Thunderbolt and USB-C connection will ensure that she fairly well future-proofed for connection with an Interface (which she'll absolutely need). But as mentioned, something fairly modern so she can keep up with Mac OS updates, but yeah, plenty of RAM, no less than 8gb. A larger screen will also help with mixing etc. Si
16. Wish I could make the premier, but am gigging! Good luck with it all Nick, can't wait to see the full film! Si
17. Hi all, With my Focusrite hat thoroughly in place (for sake of transparency), I thought I'd post a series of in-depth articles that we have published relating to considerations when choosing a recording interface. These articles are non-partisan, we're not trying to sell you anything, but full of useful information about what to look out for when considering a new interface. You may even find a cheeky photo of me hidden in there. The article topics cover: - Connection Methods (USB, Thunderbolt, Firewire etc) - Drivers & Latency - Analogue Connections - Digital Considerations - Sound Quality & Specs - Physical Features Each article is also available as an audio file, you'll find the full playlist on the homepage below, and each individual read-through on the relevant article. Take a look here: www.focusrite.com/system-science Enjoy Si // Focusrite Media Relations
18.
Hi. Question about your fx order.... do you ever run your bef filter into your oc2 octaver?
I typically have no use to with this band, but I have done. How come? Si
19.
We both know that's a lie!
Haha, well.....never say never......but I'd genuinely struggle to improve on any of this I think! So unless I change the format/layout etc, I think this is as good as it gets for this size of board. Don't get me wrong, I have other boards for different things that get changed a lot.....but this has been basically constant for at least a year, the only recent change was to put the Sub'n'Up on in place of the Mooer Tender Octaver. Si
20.
Quite possibly the worst-played and most ill-chosen sound clips I've ever encountered. I wouldn't buy a second-hand Westfield based on those clips.
Really? I think they're perfectly fine for what they are. I've definitely heard a LOT worse! I wouldn't buy any bass off the back of sound clips alone, good or bad. Si
21. This is where I'm at: Fully refined now I think Si
22. I'd much rather enquire as to whether Serek Basses would make a 5 string version of their Sacramento bass: https://www.serekbasses.com/sacramento Si
23. I'm massively impressed with the flexibility of the S'n'U Mini, that said, I'm only using it as an octave up pedal. On the sub knob, I've changed that to increase/decrease upper octave drive, and I still have the clean blend as a clean blend....I may change that as Dood has suggested above as I do tend to run the clean at 100% all the time. As is my broken record response, my absolute go-to low octave will always be the OC-2, there's nothing better to my ears (COG T-xx series comes incredibly close though), so on my 'main' board, I have an OC-2 for one octave down, and the S'n'U Mini for octave up.....this is the best combination for me! On my larger board, I have a T-16 for the extra filter control, and an Earthquaker Devices Organizer for upper octaves (although it does lows too), just because it's a little more characterful with the lag and choir controls. I think essentially I'm not a big fan of digital octave downs (unless they're actively trying to emulate analogue octave downs), but the POG/Mooer/TC standard digital octave down doesn't sound great to me. But the S'n'U Mini has the best octave up I've heard next to the Line6 M series (which are big pedals obviously), and I came from a POG/Mooer Tender. Si
24.
Japan Octave 505500, March 1985. Currently residing in Sheffield but about to appear in the For Sale section! ☹️
Added to the database Si p.s. Don't sell it
25.
I vaguely remember reading that Jon Shuker had built a couple of 5 string Ric copies, don't know if anyone knows about that? Or if I made it up in my head.
They were 6ers actually, can be seen here: http://www.shukerguitars.co.uk/pwatson.html Si
