1. I play in two tribute/cover bands and three of us from one of the bands have an originals thing going on as well. With the covers there are certain parts that have to be played as per the records or things just sound wrong. But once those bits are done I play what I want as long as it fits, thats an advantage of playing bass. The guitarists in the band are more tied to having to play the original riffs and solos. The originals band is where I get to be creative, but we know that when it comes to gigs it will be virtually no money and playing to friends and family. The appeal of cover bands is good money, packed gigs and a chance to put my spin on the music I grew up listening to and made me want to pick up the bass in the first place.
2. definitely the d'addario chromes,I swithched to these from Fender flats and they give a nice flatwond sound but with a bit of zing if you need it
3. Been through this a few times, I think its difficult to juggle a young family with the gigs etc as your kids are at the age when they need to spend time with you. I also have had to fit music around my job which pays ok but involves shift work which impacts on family time and availability for gigs. But...now I'm 51 and have become a cash point/taxi service for my kids who are in their teens I'm gigging more than ever in two covers bands and an originals project on the side. The gigs have now become a way of keeping my sanity after a week at work and a way of me and the wife having a good night out. I think most of us that keep playing end up in covers bands but if you play music you love it's great fun. Anyway, have a break from it ,put your gear away for a year before deciding to sell anything and see how you feel in a years time.
4. Bought Ashdown Perfect 10 from Basass. A top geezer, good comms and amp was packaged well and works great. A man to be trusted.
5. I gave up using Rotosound about a year ago after using them for about 25 years. The quality seems to have nose dived recently as I broke more strings in a year than I ever did in the previous 25. I switched to Ernie Ball rounds and Fender flats and found these were both good.I then thought I would try some Rotosound Jazz flats but the £35 price tag put me off. So after many years it's goodbye Rotosound
6. Here's a couple, hope I don't upset our fretless brothers Always Makes Precisions Extra Good Fast Runs Enduring Tedious Listening Extra Slippery Sound
7. My 73 P is a wonderful thing, everyone who plays it comments on how nice the neck is and how great it sounds. I bought a 78 J a few years back and it was a total dog,way too heavy and just didn't sound like a J should,so I sold it within 4 months of buying it.The J was nowhere as good as the MIJ 75 reissue J I bought a couple of years ago.
8.
Just recently got an Ashdown Perfect Ten, paid £105 from Dolphin Music and got it in a couple of days. Very happy with the unit - it handles my low B admirably considering it's "only" a 10" speaker. It has a headphone socket which kills the speaker, and a cd/aux input which is brilliant for playalong practise. Just one thing to note: When using an MP3 player, although the player will provide a stereo output, the combo only reproduces a mono signal. You get both channels, but "blended" into one. This is the same when using headphones - you get two identical channels, not a left and right. It's a minor gripe though, and all-in-all I'm well chuffed and have no hesitation in recommending this unit.
Thanks Hot Tub,how does it sound if you crank the volume up?
9. Any one got a suggestion for a practice amp, mainly for home use but sometimes might be used for a quiet band rehearsal. Looking to pay around £100 tops. thanks Buzzy
10. I emailed GE a few months ago and never got a reply,I've bought a 75 reissue Jazz and a 62 reissue P both CIJ from John at Far East Guitars and they have both been excellent quality and price. When I was GASSING after the 62 P bass, I emailed John and he kept me updated about incoming stock until he got the P bass I was after.

Looking for £170 o.n.o includes a Stagg gig bag.In great condition no dings or scratches to my knowledge.Sorry the pics aren't very good,I'll try and take some better ones if required. I'm in Kent but can deliver/meet around the M25/London area. Cheers, Buzzy
17. You know you're a bassist when........you're quite pleased with that little change you made to the bass line of a song you've played a 100 times and still no one in the band noticed it.....
18. Hi folks, just joined Basschat,I'm in North Kent and have been playing 4 strings for over 30 years. I use a MIJ 75 reissue Jazz and have a 73 P Bass which I've owned for 20 years. Also got a Crafter fretless acoustic but thats just for home use. I play through an Ashdown Mag 210 combo and sometimes hook up a 1 x 15 cab if neded.
