Hi Sky Saw, I was in the same place as you a few months back. I started this thread to get some info and had really helpful feedback from the people on here http://basschat.co.uk/topic/230165-thomann-dbs-any-good-as-a-first-bass/page__fromsearch__1 Here's the thread from when the DB arrived http://basschat.co.uk/topic/232367-new-double-bass-day/page__fromsearch__1 Good luck with the DB, you wont regret it.

Yes, he used the Bass VI for a few songs,he played more elaborate runs when using the six string than the four.

I went to see Nick Lowe at the Union Chapel last night and the guest bass and mandolin player was John Paul Jones. Had a great view of him as I was in the third row on his side of the stage.

the Thomann is a great starter instrument ( I started a thread on here when I was deciding what to buy) maybe it's just something us 6 foot plus people have to live with unless we get a longer endpin fitted. Good luck.
-
I have a Thomann 3/4 and Im thinking about getting a longer endpin fitted. I'm 6'2" and with the endpin fully extended the top of the db is level with the top of my ear.

I had a cherry red Epi EB3 after an attack of GAS. Loved the look and sound but the neck dive drove me mad. I sold it after three months.

+1 for Malcolm Tysoe, great service and very reasonable price. Recommended

Just got the DB back from Malcolm Tysoe in Farnborough where it's been for a set up. Sound post repositioned , the bridge was reduced so the action is lower, nut and fingerboard checked but did not require any work. Plays like a dream now, also found a Gallien Krueger MB112 Mk 2 on gumtree for £200, less than a year old and still covered by the Bass Gallery warranty. First rehearsal with the new set up tomorrow.

Took it to Malcolm Tysoe for a set up yesterday, they are going to adjust the bridge and lower the action also check the nut and fingerboard. The guy had a quick look and said the sound post looks as if it's moved slightly so they will put that in the best position. When I called them about a set up they said that I had made a good choice buying European instrument instead of a Chinese one.The said some of the Chinese DBs are poor quality and are almost impossible to set up. Picking it up on Saturday, I'll update the post with the results of the set up

Thanks for the all positive replies, I'll be on the case tomorrow to arrange a set up. I still have the DB I've been renting until the end of the month, Mrs Buzzy not chuffed now we have two of them in the house. Geoff, great stuff on discoverdoublebass especially for a newbie.

My DB arrived this morning, a huge box containing a Thomann 22 3/4 Europe DB with Thomastik Spirocore Mediums and a K&K Bassmax pickup. The box had several dents in it and the end pin was sticking out through a hole in the box. I called Thomann to check if I should accept delivery, they said take some pictures of the damage and write the details on the delivery notes, then unpack the DB and accept it if its not damaged. Luckily it was in perfect condition. I fitted the bridge and tuned up and made sure the Bassmax worked through my practice amp. It plays great and but I think I might get it to a luthier for a set up, the action is a bit too high and all the strings keep going a bit flat. Is that normal with new DB strings? There's also something vibrating when I play around B or C on the A string. Other than those couple of issues I'm really pleased with it.

I've placed my order with Thomann, I've gone for the Thomann 22 3/4 Europe DB with Thomastik Spirocore Mediums and the K&K Bassmax. Thanks for all the info from you guys, I'll let you know when I have a NDBD

I think I'm going with the Thomann 22 3/4 Europe DB with Thomastik Spirocore 3/4 Mediums (these have been recommended by a mate and a tutor) The sticking point is do I go with the K&K Bassmax pickup which Thomann & jrixn1 say doesn't need a pre amp or go for the Fishman BP 100 pick up and the Platinum Pro Pre-amp. Just going for the DB,Strings and the K&K brings the total to £950 which leaves me some extra if I need to take the DB to a luthier. The DB, Strings and the Fishman gear comes to £1150 which wipes out my budget. jrixn1 said the input on my amp needs to be 1M ohm to use the K&K, I've checked and its ok, as long as an Ashdown Perfect 10 can handle a DB. Any thoughts guy?

Emailed Gedo but still waiting for a response. I like the setup recommended by Thomann but not sure which strings to get. Should be placing my order within the next week once I'm certain of what to get.

I've emailed Thomann with my budget and they recommend the following : 22 3/4 European DB http://www.thomann.de/gb/thomann_kontrabass_22_02.htm Presto Nylon wound strings http://www.thomann.de/gb/presto_nylonwound_ultralight.htm K&K Bass Max http://www.thomann.de/gb/kk_bass_max.htm They said this would be a good set up if you don't want to play much slap bass, also said that with the K&K there's no need for a pre-amp. Any opinions ??

Thanks for the replies, I'll be sending some emails to Thomann and Gedo this weekend, will keep you posted.

Thanks, for the replies, really enjoyed the sound clips from Bilbo and Artisan (great playing guys, I'll get there one day) I'm gonna have a good look at both Gedo and Thomann websites and try and make a decision. Any recommendations of a particular model would be welcome. I'm looking to play Blues/Country/Swing rather than Jazz or classical.

I'm looking to buy my first DB, I've been renting a Stentor for a couple of months. Has anyone ever bought a DB from Thomann ? I've got a budget of around 1K and wondered if buying a Thomann for about £700 then taking it to a luthier for an upgrade would be a good idea.

Thanks guys, any recommendations about amps? I've got my Ashdown Mag210 that I used for electric gigs and an Ashdown perfect 10 for home use. Either of these any use for DB?
