1.
Do you want the best way or the cheapest way? In my experience you can't have both ;-) A wing pickup like the Shadow or K&k basmax can be fitted to a bass without major modifications (or no modifications if the wing slot is wide enough). You'll probably need a preamp to get the best out of the pickup before plugging into the pa or bass amp. The cheapest shadow pickup plus a basic preamp will set you back about 60-80 quid.
Thanks for the replies, can the Shadow pickup be attached and removed easily? I can't fit anything permanent as I've got to return the DB in a few months.
2. Whats the best/cheapest way to amplify a DB? I'm looking at gigging with a singer, acoustic guitarist and cajon all of which will go through the P.A. I don't think putting the DB through the P.A. will work so I'm looking to sort my own amplification out. Any advice from other basschatters would be welcomed. The DB is rented so I can't fix an expensive system to it as I've got to give it back at some point
3. Keep playing as long as you can and you are enjoying it !! I'm 55 next week and busier than ever. I play bass in a Stones Tribute, took up Sax three years ago and play it in an originals band, recently started playing Double Bass in an acoustic band.
4.
Hi Buzzy what sort of money do they charge for hiring a bass and for how long etc? Ive always known it could be done but never known how much it would be. I went to Thwaites when I was looking for a new bass. Excellent shop with a lot of good sounding basses.
Hi TheG, £35 per month, open ended deal. You can add an extra £2 for damage insurance if you are taking the bass to loads of gigs etc. They fitted a new set of strings before I took the bass as they looked a bit worn near the nut. All in all they were very helpful ( I dealt with Shakira)only down side is they don't deliver rental instruments so I had a 100 mile round trip and they don't do a rent to buy.
5. Didn't borrow my mates DB in the end. I hired one from the very excellent Thwaites in Watford. Went in the back of my Focus no problem, now I've got to work out how to play it without breaking my wrist.
6. Thanks Andy, at least I can get it home. Its a Stentor Student DB, are they any good? If I get on with it I was going to make him an offer for it, he's lost interest in playing it.
7. I'm borrowing a 3/4 size DB from a mate and I have a simple question......will it fit in a Focus Hatchback? What do you regular DB guys use to move yours around?
8. I started the "Promotion" thread back in October 2012, search the forums for "Would you answer this ad??" you'll find it there.

10. Just watched it, great playing by Darryl Jones but he seemed to use at least 4 different basses ( Lakland DJ, Precision,Music Man and something that looked like a Burns) but I couldn't hear any difference between them.

Sold

Is this still for sale?
12. I'm in a Stones trib http://www.nottherollingstones.com/ and we have to provide a set list for PRS at quite a few of our gigs. I'm sure Mick n Keef don't mind getting paid while we do the work.
13. Thanks for the all the opinions, I think I'm only going to do the gig with this band if I can use my P bass through my practice amp. Cheers everyone!!
14. Thanks for all the info,I'm gonna have to give this some serious thought before taking the plunge and buying an acoustic.
15. Thanks for the replies so far,it's definitley not about image the guys in the band are adamant that they want an acoustic bass. The line up is going to be two acoustic guitars or one guitar and a mandolin, minimal drums (played with brushes) vocals and acoustic bass. I have an Ashdown Perfect ten for home use which I suggested but they seem pretty insistant that everything goes through the P.A. I thought there might be a problem competing with two guitars and vocal through the P.A. thats why I thought about my practice amp. I like the idea of putting my Precision through a D.I box as it's already strung with flats. Any suggestion for a D.I. box?
16. Any one got any opinions/advice on Electro/Acoustic bases. I've been offered the gig in an acoustic band, so if I go for it I need to get something that will sound ok fed through the P.A rather than have to buy another amp. Not sure how much I need to pay for something half decent as I don't want to break the bank in case the band doesn't get beyond the rehearsal stage.
17. Paying for extra seats was suggested by the airline and it was on the tickets that we were a group booking of nine seats but only six people and three large items. Maybe Ryanair saw it as a way to sell some extra seats on a half empty plane.
18. Did a gig in Croatia in 2010, flew with Ryanair to Trieste in Italy then went by road into Croatia, we paid for extra seats for the guitars as they wouldn't let us take them as hand luggage and wanted too much money to put them in the hold. Whats the gig?

21. Another vote for Epi EB3, bought it in a moment of insanity, no guts in the pickups, the volume for both pickups didn't kick in until it reached 8, basically they were like on/off switches.Worst thing about it was the neck dive as soon as you let go of the neck. Got rid of it very quick. Also had a 78 US Jazz which was an absolute dog, weighed a ton and the neck was awful....got rid of it pretty quick. Shame that someone will pay loads of money for it one day because its a 70s US Fender
22. Put a set of flats on a P bass and wedge a lump of foam/sponge under the strings at the bridge. That always works for me sound wise. I don't use a pick and if the songs are not too fast i use my thumb. Used this for a few unplugged things and usually had good comments on the sound.
23. Hectic couple of days, flew from Heathrow at 9:40 p.m. on Thursday to Kuwait, for a double header, us http://www.nottherollingstones.com with a Beatles tribute (The Vox Beatles) in the grounds of the British Embassy . Over 1000 in the crowd, massive stage. Then back to UK and drive to Stroud to play the Subscription rooms. Got home at 3:30 this morning. Taking it easy today
24. great to see people talking about The Meters, I was lucky enough to see them supporting The Stones at Earls Court in 76. Soul Island is a great track that never seems to get a mention.
25. I saw this on the Kentgigs website: Mumbomachine need a dynamic bass player... Mumbomachine are after replacing there bass player who has got a promotion to 2nd guitar!!! Must be dynamic and tight (musically speaking) Would you want to be in a band where the bass player is "Promoted" to 2nd guitar ? Perhaps they are being ironic
