1.
I have one of these, bought brand new in 1999 for £350 ish, there were 3 left reduced to clear at the time in fairdeal in brum. They were a short run made in that year only from what little info I've found on them, as chilliwailer said, they are a mix of parts from US and mexico, the whole lot being finished, assembled etc in the USA factory, I changed the pickguard on mine to standard jazz config, as i never liked the all over white one, changed the pots for full size CTS ones, as it had those mini pots fitted as standard, otherwise it's stock, the neck is superb and the body is very resonant. I'd never part with mine, was my first proper good quality bass, and still puts some US standards to shame in terms of fit and finish, the others i've come across have all had good reviews, and seem consistent. snap his hand off, I would.
Do you still have the original pickguard?
2.
Option 5.... Keep them both. Get a better strap for the Yamaha so that the weight thing isn't an issue. Even if you love the precision sound like anything, there will be a day in the next 3-4 years where you hanker after a jazz type tone. Having both isn't a bad thing!
Totally agree with this.
3. £350? What are you waiting for? Don't worry about neck width/shape. I play precisions and jazzes and move between the two without any difficulty. Don't think about it, just play!
4. This isn't my bass Marc. I posted up the pics so that we could all see what an 'American Traditional' Jazz of 1990 should look like. I wouldn't hesitate to buy a Jazz like this especially if it is going for a good price. I would, of course, want to see it and play it just to make sure everything was ok. However, as you can see they are pretty tasty looking basses.
5.
Best laugh on here for ages. Didn't read all the posts because i have a life but it did remind my why i don't bother with BC much anymore.
And I'm sure we're all the much worse off for it.
6. There you go - Fender 1990 'American Traditional' Jazz Bass.
7. I enter this thread with a bit of nervousness as it seems 'off topic' has visited 'bass guitars'. However, I have a bit of sympathy for karlfer here as he ordered a bass on the basis that it would have a 'Fender' decal on the headstock as per the current offerings from Limelight. It is not for anyone to question why he wants a Fender decal. We all have different opinions and so let's live and let live. I hope that Mark will create karlfer's bass with the Fender decal before going down the route of producing basses with no logos. I would be fed up if I thought I was ordering one thing to get another. Of course if this hadn't been raised as an issue Mark could have been left to his own devices to choose when to omit the decals if at all. I have dealt with Mark in the past and he is a thorough gent. He is also capable of making his own decisions.
8.
Or it might still be here because I don't have any proper scales to weigh it.......
The early 80s basses were certainly lighter than the offerings from the late 70s. My 84 precision is not heavy and sits very nicely on the strap. I'm sure this Jazz will be the same. I just need to find £800!
9. You're welcome.
10. I think the point that TheGreek is making is that the bass doesn't carry a Fender serial number and although Hefner and Allparts produce good bodies and necks they are not Fender parts from the Fender factory. The bass has some Fender parts on it but that in itself doesn't make it a Fender bass. However, you have been very honest about how the bass has been made up and I have to say it is a great looking instrument. I would be happy to have this bass in my collection if I had the money. Good luck with the sale.
11. The only reason this is still here must be because people are skint. To get an 84 in this condition for £800 is remarkable.
12. Matt is a thorough gent to deal with and he keeps his gear in great nick. This is a cracking bass and a bargain at this price.
13. Personally I don't give a sh*t what anyone thinks about what I'm playing whilst trying out a bass. I'll play what I want to play to make sure the bass I'm considering is going to suit me and what I play.
14. It's your bass so you can do what you like with it. Unfortunately!
15.
Dont forget you dont even have to come on here to read PMS, so there is no easy way to tell if someone has read the message or not. If you get email alerts its all in those so some people might forget or not bother reading them again on here.
I think this is true. What bothers me is that some people do not have the courtesy to reply to a pm when they have been asked something in particular.
16. Thanks for the replies chaps. I'm not so sure about yours Wayne - gave me a laugh tho'. :-)
17. When a pm is sent to a fellow bass chatter do they receive notification by email. The reason for asking is that I have sent a few pms and haven't received a reply. When I go to view the pm the receiver has not read it and yet they have been logged on to the forum plenty times.
18. Mark is a great guy. Deal with confidence good people of basschat.
19. I would love this bass but as I don't have the cash I could only offer a trade. I already have the AV 62 Precision reissue from the same period and know that they are fantastic basses. Someone should hopefully snap this up as it is a great bass at a great price.
20. I attended a gig recently in a well-known local pub venue. The place is not large and yet the band I was there to see thought they were in Wembley. I had to leave as my ears were sore quite apart from the fact that I couldn't "hear" the band. The sound coming from the stage was just a cacophony of noise. Bands have to realise that LOUD isn't always best. I wonder if you all went home after your gig and had a good night's sleep with no loud band playing next door. There is a reason the landlord gets complaints. Is it really so bad to turn it down.
21. Thanks for the replies folks.
22. I have a G&L USA JB-2 which is marvellous. I got it after owning a MM 3eq Stingray. The Ray just didn't cut it for me and had that old famed weak G. I also felt that the G&L had better build quality. I was very disappointed with the Ray as I had hoped that it would complement my MM SUB which is a great bass.
23. Are you considering any trades?
