    The knobs are ok for a 78. The neck looks spot-on for the period. The seller has stated what isn't original so he appears to be upfront about the bass. The colour is unusual for a 78 although he does say it is rare. It may even be a faded sunburst. I was wondering if the body is a bitsa with some of the original stuff fitted and some not. It's a difficult one to call. I suppose it depends on how high the price goes if it would be worth having a punt.

    The plate doesn't look right to me. The shape seems too 'pointy' although this may be down to the photo. It should also have the Fender 'F' logo stamped on it. It should be a three-bolter but the plate somehow just doesn't look right.

    Remember that if you're using flatwounds they don't like thru-body stringing.

    Very nice Michael. You do realise however that you've now upset me. I recently acquired a Jazz after only playing precisions and am enjoying it immensely so much so that I fancy another Jazz. Now I know which one would fit the bill. Just a shame that I'm skint after Christmas. Enjoy the bass my friend!

    Talbo, I see that you are quite new to basschat. Every forum has its own ways of doing things and you are quickly finding out ours. This is seriously a great place to buy and sell gear if you take on board the suggestions that are being made. People don't ask questions out of idle curiosity and if you don't respect their need to know the answers then you are seriously reducing the amount of people who may buy your bass. You should also appreciate that people may have been stung in the past by sellers making claims for their instrument which turned out not to be the case. That is why pics and details always give the optimum chance of selling. We are nice people and we just want to see and learn about what we are buying especially when a couple of grand is involved. I hope this helps and good luck with the sale.

[/quote] The point I was making was with reference to an earlier post where the shop assistant didn't know the price of an amp which was out on the shop floor. He then promised to email the customer with the price and didn't. The customer went back to the shop to further enquire and the shop assistant was still none the wiser because he hadn't bothered his arse to find out. The price should have either been on the amp or available at the time of enquiry. There is no excuse for this sort of shoddy retailing.

I used to work in sports retail which also had hundreds of lines of stock. No goods went out on the floor unless they had a price on them.

    I find it incredible that an amp or whatever can be out on the shop floor and no-one knows the price of it. Don't put it out unless you know the price. Find out the price. Take a note of the price. If you don't want potential buyers to see the price on the goods then surely you should know. For goodness sake we're talking about shops here. To sell things you need to know the price. If you don't know the price then you can't sell so you grind to a halt. It is perhaps not just the recession that has been the cause of the demise of many music shops in our towns and cities.

    Well, after much consideration, listening to the great advice on here, and trying out both options I am going for roundwounds on the Jazz. I actually like the strings that were on the Jazz when I got it. They are Fender strings 45-100 with coloured ball ends. Apart from that I don't know what ones they are. It'll be fun finding out. I thought I might post up a couple of pics of the bass in question. Thanks everyone!

    When I lived in Glasgow I liked Merchant City. I didn't like CC Music as I always seems to get a better deal in other shops especially if I was trading a bass. Guitarguitar however were the worst for trading although they were the best for stock. Again, like most here, Berkeley were king for rehearsing. It's also well worth having a look at Strung Out Guitars in King Street. For repairs etc I always used (and still do) Jimmy Moon in Shawlands. He also has a stock of very tasty second-hand stuff although it is mostly guitars.

    Ok folks. I am really a precision guy. I use TI Flats on my precisions. However, I now have joined the ranks of the Jazz playing public with the purchase of a rather nice 2010 American Standard Jazz. It is currently strung with a set of Fender roundwounds 45 - 100. The thing is I really quite like them. So the question is - should the next set of strings for the Jazz be TI flats? Will the flats take away the growly tone? OR Do I stick with the Fender roundwounds and let the Precisions take care of flatwound duties. Sorry to ramble but all thoughts on this matter will be gratefully received.
