What definitely isn't cool though is putting an "e" in whisky when you refer to single malt. Leave the "e" to the Irish and anyone esle who labours under the illusion that they can make 'the water of life'. BTW, your wife has great taste. Tell her if she gets fed up with you then I'm up for grabs.

No matter what was done in terms of setup the G string was just weak. It has been a widespread problem discussed many times with EBMM fanboys dismissing it as a setup problem. Again, it's one of these areas where opinion differs. Interestingly, the G string on my SUB is just fine. Maybe the only way to ensure that the problem isn't there is to play the individual SR that you may wish to purchase. I do like MM products. I just wouldn't buy one without trying it first. I am the new owner of the "uninspiring, boomy, rigid, and dead sounding" DJ4. However, I have found it to be "inspiring, exciting, flexible and sounds fantastic". I also used to own a 2eq Stingray which I found to be lifeless in the treble department. My SUB4 however is a marvellous bass which will be with me as long as I am able to play. It all goes to show that the ideal way to investigate your own choices is to get out and play individual basses and make up your own mind. We are all different and look for different things in our basses. These forums also show that individuals can be extolling the marvellous sounds and features of their basses one minute and selling them the next. Trust your own ears and hands. All the best!

  5. Personally I wouldn't go near Strung Out. They did a so-called setup on my son's jazz. It was awful and they managed to score the wood where the truss rod key goes in. Jimmy Egypt's shop is also pretty expensive as is Jimmy Moon. I have to say however that Jimmy Moon is a great guy and does fantastic work. I wouldn't grudge the money for Jimmy Moon to work on my bass. However, I would contact our fellow BC'er 7string (Mark). Mark dwells in Glasgow, does great setups, and can tackle most jobs. Why not drop him a PM.
  6. Maybe he liked the guys in his band. Maybe they weren't judgemental and had a good time playing together. Maybe they had a good laugh and didn't take themselves too seriously. Maybe they liked to keep the atmosphere light.
  7. My 62 reissue came with a period hardcase. That was in 2006, I don't know if they still do the case. This is an absolutely beauty. At this price I expect it will sell quite quickly. Shame about the case though.

  9. I'm so happy this went well for you Chris. When I saw the bass in V&R it looked absolutely fantastic. I loved the colour and the fact that it still looked as if it had many more years of playing still in it. Unfortunately when I heard the price it was just way out of my league. I really am content with my 62 reissue and my 83. However, a pre-CBS would be the Holy Grail. Enjoy the bass man - you deserve it.

  11. You really like your P bass. You don't know if you will like a Jazz bass. Both are just dandy for fingerstyle. Many of us have both and use them for different applications. I wouldn't sell the P unless you are certain that you don't need it anymore. I also wouldn't buy a Jazz until you know that you will like it. You mention about the time when you had your Stingray and then saved up for the P. Why not do the same again and save up for the Jazz. I can almost guarantee that if you sell the P you will only want one in the future.

  14. Maybe more basses would be sold in a dedicated shop. However, as has been said the OP has gone down this route before. How much more information can we give? Is this just a pipe dream.?

  16. Personally I would take with a huge pinch of salt anything that appeared on the EB forum. As they say themselves you are not allowed to be critical of their products on their forum paid by them. As much as a hint of criticism and all the fanboys jump on you and remind you that Sterling Ball is god and that no bad bass ever left the factory and that all other basses by other manufacturers should be used for firewood. I had a very nice Stingray but it, as most of them seem to be, was bedevilled by the G problem. No matter how much setting up (by professionals) I was never able to adequately get the G sounding as I wanted it. However, my Musicman SUB gave me no such problem. I'll let you work out which one was sold and which one stayed.
  17. Now you see it's all in the eye of the beholder. I wouldn't thank you for a maple fingerboard. To me the rosewood board just looks the dog's danglers on this bass.
  18. When Pino plays fretless he uses his pre-EB Stingray. His Precision is fretted.

  22. I love both my P basses. I like my other basses too. My P tho is the one I go to first for a gig. Also, I've never understood this cutting through the mix thing. My P can be heard when my band gig no problem. Is it a sound engineer problem?

The first thing I asked was the price. When the female assistant told me I just said "Oh!" She then rather sarcastically said; "So you'll be wanting two then?" I didn't bother to ask anything else.
