You need to watch out and make sure that the 'phones you buy are proper studio ones as the pair I recently bought I just sold as they sound almost as if there is constant octave effect - which in some respects is true (some bass frequencies are added) and for simply indulgent listening this is great, but sadly for bass practice or anything besides recreational listening it is pretty rubbish.
Cheers everyone, I'll do a bit of investigation, I'll bring the beyer dynamics home first, if they work fine, if not I'll venture a little further a field!
 2.
under a grand, this will surely go now??
We live in hope! There's been a couple up for round the £1.5k mark recently & they went although probably not for that much, dunno, I guess everyones skint!
 3.
I can thoroughly recommend the Sony MDR-XB700. Serious headphones and not outrageously expensive. Excellent right down to low B.
Cheers, will check them out.
 4.
Although expensive any headphones designed for the monitoring of audio in a studio enviroment and mixing etc would be more than clear enough and will have a wide/low enough frequency response to hear what you play. That said they ARE expensive though (we're talking a good shade over £100 and then waaaay up) but I've been happily using Sennheiser HD465's and used to have a pair of HD437's (the latter feeling very breakable) to practise in hotels or late at night/early in t'morn just with my bass going into a mixer and it's more than enough at a sensible volume. It might be worth pointing out I don't have a hugely bass-heavy tone most of the time and that I like volumes pretty much as low as possible if it can be done. They're not as expensive as the specifically designed studio monitoring headphones by a long shot. I don't have much experience in this but I'd imagine without spending a big wadd of cash you'd be hard pushed to find a set of the small in-ear phones that give a audible, strong low-end without cranking up the volume. That said I have a friend who uses Bose in-ear headphones all the time and says the bass is more than enough. Link here to a selection of the more expensive studio/monitoring headphones that'd do the job. Hope that helps, Ben.
Cheers for that Ben, I have some Beyer Dynamic HD250's at work which I will give a go, I've currently using some cheapo behringers with a little vox headphone amp but would like to hear what i'm actually playing so I'd thought I'd spend a few quid.
 5. Morning everyone, here we have the latest in my bass reduction. This is my Shuker Custom J4 bass, now gone.
 6. Morning everyone, Can anyone suggest a decent set of headphones to go with the PJ bass buddy for practise purposes? Ta.
 7.
What a gorgeous 5. Love the wood . Drool...............
Yep, the grain on this one is really nice, if anything maybe a tad darker than it looks in the pics, also has a very nice satin finish.
 8.
How wides the neck on this ? Whats the string spacing like ?
G'day Jack, the necks pretty slim, I have smallish hands and cope with it ok, string spacing feels a lot like my old stingray 5 which was 17mm, I'll measure it for you today & get back.

Spec will be: Alder body finished in "shell pink" cellulose with aged white s/plate, quarter sawn rock maple neck with maple board + lacquer tinted to that vintage yellowy colour, bone nut, 21 frets, Gotoh bridge, Hipshot "ultralite" tuners, bareknuckle J pickups, East j- retro deluxe circuit with vol, blend, mid+sweep, treb/bass stack, passive tone/push pull passive bypass.
 10.
On hold in my country!
Can't believe nobody has bought this yet, don't let it being overseas put you off, Javier is a good bloke to deal with & takes care of everything.
 11.
Monday morning bump.
Price reduction to get things moving.
 12.
Jon's stuff is great, I have two of his jazzes & a P-bass on order, every bit as good as any of my Sadowsky's have been, kent Armstrong? sound good to me, the only other time I've used them was on a Lakland Jerry scheff I used to own, very full & clean sounding.
Monday morning bump.
 13.
I have never tried any of Jon's stuff nor Ken Armstrongs.... I therefore have no inkling of the sound. It does look very pretty.... Much prettier than a Warwick.
Jon's stuff is great, I have two of his jazzes & a P-bass on order, every bit as good as any of my Sadowsky's have been, kent Armstrong? sound good to me, the only other time I've used them was on a Lakland Jerry scheff I used to own, very full & clean sounding.
 14.
I played this bass last year when Happy Jack still had it and it's a fabulous sounding instrument that plays very nicely indeed! If it wasn't for the relatively narrow string spacing (compared to what I'm used to at 19mm) I would be very interested in it myself... IIRC, the bass had lots of tonal versatility without sounding in any way like it's the circuitry that's doing all the work, if that makes sense. Quite a unique story to it as well, so on top of having a superb bass you'd also be owning a piece of british bass-making history!
Yep, this one is narrowish, feels a lot like the stingray 5's which I think are 17mm, I believe this bass was the first he made when setting up shop & was used a NAMM in 96? so is a sort of prototype, one of a kind!
 15.
Thats a lot of knobs. And a beautiful bass. Must sound the balls. WHat do the all do? I guess theres the all thre bands and a volume/pan? There cant be a passive tone can there? Very beautiful
Yep, its a lovely bit of wood & a really fast neck, If I'm honest I have no idea what all the knobs do! I will mail Jon Shuker & ask him for some info, there is a vol, pan, 3 band eq, one sounds like some kind of mid sweep but I spend most of my time chugging away on passive stuff so this is all new to me! If anyone out there has any ideas?????
 16. Morning all, here we have the latest in my bass thinning out. This is my Shuker “elite” neck thru 5 bass. This is an absolutely stunning bass both visually, tone wise and for build quality but Jon is building me a custom P-bass (soon to appear in the build diaries) and I’ve had a moment of financial clarity so have to sell something to pay for it!. The pictures are the previous owners (happy Jack), hope he doesn’t mind but I haven't had a mo to do any, if anyone needs me to I can. For those of you not familiar with Jon Shukers' work go to www.shukerguitars.co.uk and have a look, they are really special. Specs are: 35” scale, 3 piece laminate thru-neck with walnut pinstripes, rosewood board, 24 frets, 5A flame maple (I think) drop top, satin topcoat, Kent Armstrong “soapbar” pickups, 3 band active circuit. Condition: Very good +, there are a few very minor blemishes & slight marks + a tiny bit of light tarnish on the hardware but nothing hideous or obvious without close inspection or that effects playability, it plays perfectly with no issues. Price: I’m looking for £1099 NOW £850 or reasonable offers and can ship if required, I'm not really looking for trades on this one as it is supposed a fundraiser but as always I have a weakness for nice basses so please feel free to try! Cheers for looking. Chris. PS come in a decent leather gig bag.
 17.
hope so, it is beautiful & sounds just like a good jazz should, its just that I have two of them and really wanted a P-bass, so one had to go, its a sin for it not to be played regularly. (ooh, & yes, it is a 34")
Sunday morning bump.
 18.
Hopefully Jack you are even Happier having acquired my lovely AC. I really like the P too - now what do I sell???!!!! A total pleasure! Steve
Hope you enjoy the status, a pleasure doing business. Cheers Chris.
 19.
So many basses I could fall in love with on at the moment ... have a bump on me ... I am sure it will go to a good home
hope so, it is beautiful & sounds just like a good jazz should, its just that I have two of them and really wanted a P-bass, so one had to go, its a sin for it not to be played regularly. 20. Evening all, Withdrawn for now.
 21.
And replied. Still available
Well worth dropping round Colin's & giving this one a try, its a really nice bass!
 22.
Blimey Chris that was a quick turnaround! The Precision I got at the same time is lovely BTW!
Yeah, I have a habit of doing that, doh!( The P's are nice), I have to many jazzes & seemed a good idea at the time, it was just too pretty to resist! Jon is building me a PJ hybrid with jazz neck & some nice wood, should be good!
 23.
Can you get a good range of tones out of this bass?
Indeed, but I think its gone, you well?
 24.
I'll take it Chris. ^_^
Excellent!
 25. Morning all, Latest in my clear out, this is my Sadowsky Ultra vintage Jazz 4 in lake placid blue. I bought this in a moment of weakness (it looks and sound lovely) recently from bass direct & it is a stunning bass but I have succumbed to temptation & commissioned Jon Shuker to build me a P-bass which I have been hankering after for a while so alas one of my collection has to go. The bass has had the stock pickups & circuit replaced with Nordstrand big singles (amazing open single coils) and preamp with bass treble stack / vintage tone / vol / vol + push pull passive bypass which sound sensational, kind of beefier than the originals and very flexible, the work was carried out by Bass directs techies & isn't a DIY job! Specs: 34" scale, maple board with black block inlays & Black binding, Nordstrand "big singles" pickups + Nordstrand 2 band preamp, alder body finished in lake placid blue, Sadowsky semi hard case. Condition: Superb, no dings, dents chunks missing or problems & has had a new set of DR "fat beams" fitted. Price: I'm looking for £1295 ono, no trades on this one please, it's a fund raiser, I can ship if required. Cheers for looking. Chris.
