In classical music, if the pitch of the bass part does not change while the upper harmony changes, it's usually called a pedal point - after organ music where this technique is not uncommon, e.g. Bach's Toccata in F.

There's pros and cons either way as has been discussed. I had an E-MU 0404 PCI interface and the sound quality was absolutely superb in every respect, however the software was really rather complex and took quite a while to get your head around. I didn't have a problem with PC electrical noise induction (RF signals in the case) but I could see that others might and this is not something that could be forecast in advance as every PC is different. At a minimum I'd say one needs stereo at hi-res 96Kbit/sec - not sure if USB-2 can deliver that reliably. Firewire as Rimski suggests is probably a safer option.

Take a look at Christina Baldwin http://www.christinajbaldwin.com/gallery_144695.html and Lucy SM Johnston http://lucysmjohnston.com/photos/photos.html

Pirastro Obligato and Evah Pirazzi Strings
sdgrsr400 replied to Major-Minor's topic in EUB and Double Bass
Not strictly relevant, but I have medium EP's on the lower two strings of my 'cello - they are a really good match for the instrument and sound great. Upper two strings I use Larsens. -
If I was near a Maplin Electronics shop, I'd pop in with the unit and ask someone. They stock pots, resistors, etc etc. Unfortunatey these shops are staffed with a ratio of about one clued-up person to four clueless ones, so YMMV.

Recently bought his Lakland 55-02, absolutely no problems. Good communications, item was in condition as described and was well packed. Recommended!

Hi Manu, Welcome from another 55-02 owner. "atmosphéric métal" sounds very cool...

The Bass Gallery have an excellent selection, you could give them a call.

Not exactly an answer to your question, but I really like this guy charly7v on YT: http://www.youtube.com/user/charly7v . He uses a Digitech JamMan looper and builds up some amazing layers of sound (not all the vids are adequate).

Sounds like a great jam, Danny. It's nice that they were open to admitting our instrument - sometime traditional players can be rather rigid in their views about what is or is not acceptable: of course they want to preserve the integrity of their tradition.

Who's out there doing "non-mainstream" bass guitar? Full respect to all pop/rock/jazz players, but I thought it would be nice to have a thread for discussion of music other than those which use the bass guitar. For example, worship, classical, avant-garde, ... For me, I'm hoping do do some kirtan accompaniment (that's a kind of sacred chant, typically with harmonium and djembe/tabla as the other instruments). I'm convinced the bass guitar is a really versatile instrument which could add a lot to other music contexts, so am keen to hear about what's happening. Over to you...
Them lovely [s]bastards[/s] people at RyanAir now want £60 to take a guitar on board.
AFAICS, the scam is you have to buy an extra seat for it, but the extra seat does not have a baggage allowance so the guitar and case has to be counted in with your other luggage. The carry-on allowance is a miserly 10Kg. More at http://www.ryanair.com/site/EN/conditions.php

I'm coming round to the view that the B-2 is probably a better proposition all things considered, so thanks for the input.

Check out http://rock-til-you-drop.com/ - it's for the more 'mature' musician and is definitely worth a look.

Very useful review, was looking at getting one of these. What carrier handled the shipment, and how long did delivery take? Cheers.

I'd look at the sheets for various 4-string songs you like, and in a number of places I'm sure you'll find the bass line has been compromised to some extent by not having access to notes below E. Typically this would be in songs in keys like C or D or Eb. Then you can put the "high" C/D/Eb down an octave where it makes sense to do so - or use octaves etc. That's what I plan to do when my 5-ver arrives in a few days time...

Here's some more Bach. It's the first movement of his Trio Sonata No.1 in Eb for organ, BWV525 arranged for three solo instruments. I have played the bass part on the cello and may someday be able to play it on the electric bass. Bach's bass lines are phenomenally powerful, and this piece especially so IMO. Attached are PDF's of the score and bass part, and an MP3. Enjoy!
Oh, and if you have a decent spec PC just download and give reaper a whirl before you spend too much on a mac, might quench your thirst without draining your wallet
+1 for Reaper, excellent product, free evaluation. You can buy a printed manual too.
