Absolutely gorgeous love it & want it 😍

Thank you, I don't think its a mod as they are the only holes drilled for them I had seen pictures of other, where the strap button was lower down. It is a nice bass and feels really well made and the pickups are quite hot & loud in it,so I won't be changing them they are good enough as they are. I took the tugbar off as the Ric version was made of clear plastic IIRC. One gripe I have is that the action on this bass is better than I had on my '92 4003, I could never get the action on that bass as low as this one.

Sorry or the late reply been really buy at work here are a couple of picture taken now, & a couple from the seller in Japan the Ric TRC was already on this when I bought it. All I have done is taken off the tugbar & tuned it up. It feels very well made I bought it a I missed my Ric 4003, but couldn't justify the price now.

I bought a 1990 Greco RB-85 Bass from Japan and it arrived this morning, while I was in work so just spending time with it now. I'd owned a real Rickenbacker 4003 but couldn't justify what they are asking or them secondhand, so looking online I came across the Greco did a little bit of reading up about them and bought it. I'll take some pictures over the weekend and post them soon, anyone else here have a Greco RB Bass?

The main floating bridge on Hofner guitars & basses during the 1950's to the present day, has been the ebony 2 piece bridge with fretwire in the slots for each string & metal wheels for string height.

Bodies are the same the main difference between the German '64, & the HCT was the headstock on the HCT was a little longer and the edges coming up from the nut were sharper. My 64 500/1 headstock My 2007 HCT (Recently given a new home)

Lovely looking bass though but, the wooden bridge ha been replaced.

Really glad it worked out & your bass is back up and running 👍😁

When I had my HCT 500/1 one of the machine heads broke, & I bought a replacement set and changed all four at the same time. I still have the original 3 machine heads which you are welcome too. that way you could experiment without ruining yours straight off.

Just been looking at one of those on AE not a bad price either.

What the inside o a Hofner HCT 500/1 looks like. More of a coffin type of bracing than a centre block.

This one has been with me since November 1988 & is my most prized possession. So as we have been together for 36 years and counting, I guess this is my dream bass.

Last year my friend brought over is newly acquired '78 Jazz Bass which, he paid around £1300 which was a very good bargain indeed. He did some work on the back of the neck and the result was amazing I still, can't get over how good that neck felt in my hand it felt amazing. Your right about the weight though it was very heavy it reminded me of my old,Peavey T40. It really was a great feeling & playing bass through my Rumble 200 combo.I didn't want to give him it back. H gave me the thumbrest that was on it which now is on my 2014 Am.Std Precision.

Both the Hofner & Pyramid Gold sets were both 40-55-70-100, I wouldn't go any higher on my '64 than that. And again there isn't a lot of difference between the two with regards, to string tension & feel knowing that now I would have stayed with the Pyramid Gold set. The LaBella set is 35-95 and always seems to get good reviews even McCartney used them for a while, so there is a good endorsement. Pyramid Gold do a Vintage 63 set of strings with Black silk ends I've toyed with the idea, of buying a set for the HCT,as it's a black bass but I don't play it that much though. 😀
-
Yes the headstock is slightly longer on the HCT & also has a much sharper look than the '64. I bought my strings from Bass direct they arrived quickly & I wanted the same brand of strings that could have been on it when it was new.

I gigged with mine for 10 years from 1988 - 98 no matter what, songs we were playing it had to be that bass. I'm busier at work these days so I just play for my own enjoyment these days. String wise I'm using Hofner's own flatwounds but I bought a set of Pyramid Gold flatwounds, and both are exactly the same even the silk windings are the same colour. So perhaps Hofner have Pyramid make their strings as well see the pics. I to own a HCT 500/1 but can't really bond with it, the '64 beats it on everything. Yours should have the pencil thin neck roughly 38mm at the nutwhere as the HCT is 42mm, plus yours must have the sides of the finger board nicely rolled after 60 years mine certainly has. I thought your choice of name for your bass was a lovely tribute to your brother. I hope you get many happy years of owning it & playing it all my other basses are, put away now it's just the '64 again it just feels right after almost 36 years.

No the rectangular style the had in '64 I've owned this bass since November 1988.

Great looking bass I absolutely love my '64 500/1, which is 60 years old on the 24th of May. I have a set of ferrules if you want them.
