From The Jam are playing where I work tonight, so throughout the day they have been setting up for tonight's show. I have always liked Foxton as a bassist & liked the tone he got with the Rickenbacker. His guitar tech allowed me to take a couple of pictures of his gear, that he is using tonight. His main bass is his Fender Precision Japanese '57, which was left in the guitar holder so headstock shots only. His backup Precision was a Mex Fender Classic '50's with the gold scratchplate, a very nice looking bass as well. The third was a Washburn semi acoustic which I only caught the headstock.Strings and picks were both from Rotosound,it looked like the picks were .96mm. I will have to find this picture on my phone, there was a pedal board but not sure if it was his or the guitarists. Hope the show goes well.
Many people say the early 80s Squires are as good as US ones (build quality and sound-wise), though I've not tried one myself. They normally go for the same price as used MIJ's, which is still a lot less than US ones. I used to have a '89 Squire P bass made in Korea (the early MIK basses were made from the same parts as the mid 80s Squire basses because when production moved from Japan to Korea, they just shipped all the necks, bodies and pickups across, and they were assembled in Korea instead of Japan. That bass played and sounded really good, far superior to any Fender MIM P bass I've played. I've read Fenders from the 70s and perhaps the 80s are not that good. I think large prices for these are paid because they look cool, and they do. If I had a choice between a 80s Fender P bass and a Squier JV 80s P Bass, I would choose the Squier, and treat myself with the cash I save.
I have an '89 MIK Squier Precision & I doubt they were leftover Japanese parts. The JV's were full body thickness were as the MIK's were thinner, and the body wood on mine is plywood and not the solid wood used on the JV. Plus my guess is that Samick who made mine used there own bodies & hardware, with the only exception being they could use a Fender headstock on the Squier's .But I may be wrong this is just my take on it with my own S9 MIK Squier.

I to started playing in the 1980's (87 to be precise), I remember Dixon's selling the JV Strat,& Precision with an amp for £199. My best mate bought one (the Strat) and it was a really nice guitar, and the first bass I ever played was the Squier JV '57 Precision.I Saw one for sale on Andy Baxter's site last year for £1250, 6 times more than it was new so I got a brand new Fender American Standard Precision. I just couldn't justify that price for a Squier I still like that bass though, wish I'd bought it back in '87.

What a fantastic setup you have there genuine '64 & reissue '63, and the Ampeg Heritage you have everything covered .
-
One bass that I had that was very light was a Peavey Cirrus BXP 4, the only drawback for me was that it was 35" scale.
-
What about the Vintage V4 P bass clone, I have heard that they are light weight.
-
Very nice & does it play & feel like a CS bass?

Like you artisan I to will turn 50 in August 2017 (where has the time gone) hope you find yourself a good bass, this has got me thinking now though do I drop enough hints to my family .

I was pleasantly surprised with the QC of the new Fender American Standard series, my 2014 Precision came with it setup nicely I still can't get over how nice the neck feels on these .

16 month on from buying my Precision & I'm still glad I did. Looking at changing the 45-100 Flatwound strings, to a set of 45-65-85-105 Flatwounds.
I used to like 70s Fender Precisions, have had 3, all were great. Loved the mojo about them having picked up a bit of wear along the way. But then in one of my fits of madness did a cull, sold them all and have gone for the post 2012 Precisions, having heard a soundclip on here - Spongebobs btw. Bought mine (a 2015) online, when it turned up was a bit concerned as for a while my fretting hand ached a bit, as the neck was a bit deeper than I was used to. Now having got used to it - only took a couple of weeks - I`m so glad I did it. The new Precision is a much better instrument, sounds better, plays better (all imo of course, might not be for others) and any wear that happens is going to be mine. I like it so much I`ve bought another, just for home use. So in my mind I like vintage instruments, and to the eye as well, but if honest, I`ve not yet played a vintage instrument I like as much as my 2015. It`s really changed my opinions on new instruments as was never that keen before, thought them too shiny and soul-less. I was wrong.
I agree with you I love my 2014 Precision with the CS pickups.

Another vote for the Tort look.

I have a 1964 Hofner violin bass that I have owned since 1988, and like owen above I hardly play it but it has a lot of sentimental value to me.For me the "vintage thing" could be called the "history thing" owning a Fender from '51-'65 when Leo owned the company. And where & who owned it originally before it made it's way to the UK to eventually you being the next owner / custodian.

All the best with your 1st Precision

Stunning enjoy it

Another late vote for the Fender 9050 flatwounds, mine have been on since Jan 2015. Toying with the idea of buying 2 sets & making a 45-105 set, always used that gauge I guess you like what you like.

Lovely basses enjoy them both
I was saving money for a Fodera when this came up and scuppered my plans!
Nice looking bass personally I think you made the right choice

Haven't played it for a long while myself, maybe I'll get it out soon and have a quick go.
Are the strings spacings at the nut the same on all of them? The wider space between the A and D would annoy the hell out of me.
The nut slot for the A string was wide-end by the previous owner, for reasons known only to them. As the bass was original & 24 years old when I got it I didn't want to put a new nut on (and there were not many places you could get Hofner spares),so I just put a small wedge of paper in there or a bit of a match stick if I remember. The bass always held it's tuning and was always nice to play.

I have had my '64 Violin bass since 1988, did loads of gigs with it & it never let me down once. The neck has never needed to be reset which has been nice, stopped using it back in 1998. I only get it out now and again still a great little bass though. These pictures were taken about 5 years ago IIRC. I have no recent pictures but will take one tomorrow I promise. Here is a picture I took back in August .

It was nice owning 5 basses at any one time (selling one's to buy others), but quite a few times I sold at a loss . And with a family to support & a job that for a while now looks shaky, was one of the main factors for going with 1 bass & 1 amp . But I am 50 next year (feels weird writing that) so you never know, maybe my wife and kids will buy me a bass .
