1. My 2007 S1 is luvverly. Better than the 1968 C neck I used to own in every way apart from the useless S1 switch (which is going soon). I'm sure the quality varies on the new ones. But I bet the old ones were a lot more variable. I would always 'try before buy' with a large cash outlay. I don't buy this older is better malarkey.
2.
Does anyone make a really nice soft suede strap?
I've got a 30ish year old Rotosound embossed one in dark red that's verging on chamois soft. If you were it too long it rucks up and doesn't spread the weight. Nice at first though.
3.
Steve Diggle used to play your cousin Gary? What sort of sound did he get out of him?
"Pack it in Diggle" in E flat mostly.
4. As used by Steve Diggle before he moved to guitar and my cousin Gary. These are great just like the Shergold Marathons they developed into. I would love one.
5. I wouldn't advise playing with him anymore. We had a 'leaving' guitarist honour a last gig and it was pretty horrible. I spent the first half hour restraining myself from giving him a good precisioning. I love gigs but I didn't much enjoy that one. Any missed/fluffed note he makes will be like a cat scratching a blackboard to your ears.
6. I got my 2007 S1 last September for £640 brand new. It's a very nice one. Well once I binned the white scratchplate for a black one The S1 switch is totally useless. It just cuts the volume and takes out all the grunt. It will go in the redundant parts box once I get around to fitting the Wizard thumper I bought ages ago.
7. I'm really struggling just doing BVs! I've never done 'em before. But since we became a trio very recently I've no real choice. It must be practice at the end of the day. On our older songs that I 've played for a couple of years it's not too bad now. The newer ones, especially where I have to sing and do something fiddly and/or play on the off beat are proving a challenge. The only advice I was given was try and 'find' the first note and practice singing in the car to the stereo. I feel I need a longer journey to work. I've decided to root note it on my sung parts live until I've got it nailed. My excuse is I'm 46 and it's harder to learn new skills....
8. Red & white stripes with a black scratchplate for home gigs. Black with a gold scratchplate for away gigs.
9.
Yes please.
PM'd
10. OK we're booked in for 27th November. Probably looking to add another band. I'd rather we did a storming 45 minutes than a double set. Any takers?
11.
Mott's Saturday Gigs.....what a cracking and highly under rated song !!
It is indeed. Mr Hunter is very bitter that it wasn't a hit. Maybe the Croydon reference killed it? Hope they play it at Hammersmith Odeon next Friday.
12. Scratch my previous one. U2. It wouldn't take long to learn. Loads of cash. I could also take Bono out with a well judged swing of the headstock and pretend it was an accident.
13. If it was a current band I'd stick with mine. Only with money, more gigs, groupies, etc.
14. The Faces - for the partying.
15.
I know what you mean I'm from Tottenham.
You're a Norverner
16. Thanks Wayne. I get all cab driver when I think of Croydon. Sarf of the river at this time o' night!
17. Anyone been there? We're probably doing it in November. Croydon's a bit off my manor. I only know Croydon from Saturday Gigs by Mott the Hoople.
18. I know exactly where you're coming from Wayne. I take it like me you're not half way through a 10 album deal with Sony? Where do these people get off? Luckily the problem is no more.
19. One string per finger. Therefore 4. You people from the Fens may need more though.......
20.
Is that Ashdown dual band one any good?
I've got one. The high and low split is useful. I use it for smoothing out the highs and leave it virtually off for the lows. Mains only. Eats batteries.
21. Live, I have only once correctly played the very simple bass intro to a song we do called 90 Miles. It's a but embarassing as I wrote it. Last time I played it in A instead of B.
22. Another chapter "Eb This is found at fret number 6 on the second fattest string. Don't worry though. You'll never need to use it. In reality it's what in music theory they call a 'spacer'. It's just there to seperate the important D and E roots. I've only ever played this by mistake in the early days. A good technique is very important. When I was giving Mandy lessons on my old Vox I spent a lot of time making sure her fingering was spot on."
23. That books been my inspiration for years. I particularly like the Chapter on 'D' with the Mandy Smith anecdote.
24. The guitarist and I bring in a basic idea/ideas then we all jam it into a song. We both pitch in on lyrics. The drummer looks after the beats. I come up with the bassline. The guitarist comes up with guitar stuff. We knocked out a rather good one last night like this. I have honestly never worked any other way. If a member of the band I was in told me exactly how to play a bass line I would tell them exactly how to f*** off. That's demarcation that is.
25. Call 'em what you want. Nobody would take any notice. They'd all be watching the 'ego' of guitarists.
