Magic Ship. Saturday 11th July. The Clubhouse, Twickenham. 9pm on. Free. Slightly under rehearsed and five new songs get a gig baptism.....

I had one during my 5 minutes of owning a Jazz bass. I still feel dirty. It was a NOS Mighty Mite one I got on ebay from the states when it was $2=£1. It was shinier and heavier than the original and made zero sound difference as far as I could tell.

My bandmates and I have all been through the relic process. We are really 18 but now look like well used and grizzled 45 year olds.

I play with a pick because I always have. I can play a bit of fingerstyle but I don't like doing it much. I prefer to keep things simple. My theory is us picksters, being less sensitive animals, also like to fiddle with our basses. Changing pickups, swapping necks, etc. You don't really want the screwdriver to slip when you're installing a new volume knob on 3 grands worth of unobtanium oil finished Nicaraguan Mojo wood.

Good luck. 2 quick pints just before you hit the stage is my advice.

Just ordered a Wizard 'Thumper' for the sunburst. I can't wait to give it a go.

Band Photographer - Any recommendations?
Low End Bee replied to Linus27's topic in General Discussion
He looks pretty cool. Where is he based and how much did he cost?
He's based in High Wycombe but isn't afraid to travel. Cost depends on what you want. But it's a lot more reasonable than you would expect given his portfolio. He's getting back into the swing of shooting people rather than objects so is willing to do a deal. He's a top bloke with lots of good muso stories too. Expect to bring lots of clothes, hats, sunglasses, etc. I changed me clothes more often than Kylie and was absolutely knackered at the end. -
Band Photographer - Any recommendations?

I can recommend this chap. He's just getting back into band/music photography after spending a few years doing fine art still life stuff. He was the CBS (and then Sony) in house man for years. Done 'em all from Alice Cooper to Celine Dion! We had a huge laugh on the photo shoot with him and we're just waiting for the pics back from 'post production'. The few that I've seen are really top stuff. Baker Images -
We're about halfway through the recording of our 2nd CD. Here's a demo of our glam rock tribute which goes down pretty well live. I think we may tone down the drum 'phasers set to stun' a bit. No complicated low endery on this tune. Exasperation Station

I like the white p bass an awful lot. Very nice.

Here's my two. The sunburst is a 2007 S1 Precision. The only mod was to change the scratchplate from white to black. I was, until I got my Trace Elliot on Saturday, very happy with it. Now I think I'd like a bit more oomph in the pickup department. Suggestions welcome. The black one is one I made myself from bits sourced from the net when I decided to get back into playing about 5 years ago after a nearly 20 year break. I was one happy bunny when it was finished and it all worked. Mighty Mite maple body (was cream now sparkly Honda Nighthawk Black), NOS maple Jazz neck from the early 90s (much more tinted than in the photo) that's probably a licenced Allparts item, Badass II, Dimarzio P, heavy duty Schaller tuners and a cracked cheapo mirror plate. I just need a glowing green scratchplate as it weighs nearly as much as the Trace Elliot. Sounds great though. Very 70s.
I'd take it off you if you'd courier it, although that lacquer crack does concern me a bit.
It really is just a crack in the lacquer. I have no idea how or when it happened. It would probably T cut out and looks a lot worse in the photo than it does in the flesh. I worked in the courier industry for years which is why I would never send anything that's not in a hard case. Maybe I could maybe meet you halfway along the M4? If you're still interested PM me. Ad

OK the verdict was That Line 6 300 jobbie - Was a nice bit of kit. I just knew I'd be tempted to piddle around with the 8 million combinations all the time and cock up the sounds. Ashdown Mag 210 - I've played through one of these at a gig last year and it was very nice. Almost the one. S/H Hartke 350 1x15 'transient attack' (through a friend) - Nice but not great vfm and a couple of crackly pots. Trace Elliot 715x - Was the punchiest of the lot and I got a very pleasing sound out of it in seconds. I managed to get it for a very decent price too. Seems to be built like the proverbial brick outhouse. I've ordered a trolley.......
Carol Kaye played with a pick whereas James Jameson plucked with just one finger. Who would you choose between these two early bass guitar pioneers?
I can't believe it's taken me this long to come up with the reply....Hey Lord. Don't ask me questions.

OK my combo auditions for tomorrow are: That Line 6 300 jobbie (with an open mind.) Ashdown Mag 210 (looks like good vfm) S/H Hartke 350 1x15 'transient attack' (through a friend) Trace Elliot 715x (thinking I might stretch the budget a bit and get a keeper) Any reliability issues or otherwise on these? One of these will be coming back to sunny Brentford in the back of the motor.

Carol. Played with a pick and I prefer women.

Started playing about six years ago. I gave up in a strop in 1985 after being in gigging bands from the age of 15 to the age 22! I had a pretty serious bike accident in 1996 and have a metal bar in my left forearm and a right wrist like a bag of gravel. Somebody suggested taking up the bass again would help me get more strength and movement back which it has in spades. I'm now gigging regularly again in an originals band of born again musicians (not in the god sense) that I've been in for three years now. I'm enjoying it more now than ever. I've even had to sign an autograph or two

Regrets. Never ever having a lesson. Not that I've have paid attention. Buying a mint, lightweight, 68 sunburst precision for £250 in 79. Sawing off all but the control bit of the torty scratchplate, spraying it unipart black.and then selling it for £200 in 83. Giving up playing for 20 years!

I walked into Peter Cooks in Hanwell a couple of years ago after having a few sherberts in a local hostelry with a mate. I came home with an Ibanez AGB200. It's incredibly pretty and very versatile for a short scale. I put some Daddario flatwounds on it which I thought were more in keeping. It's very clean apart fom a slight lacquer crack on the neck by the heel which doesn't affect playing and inevitably the gold is wearing off the tinware a little bit. I've used it for 2 rehearsals, one recording session, a photo shoot and a bit of home noodling and that's about it. It's just not really my cup of precision tea. No case or anything. So I don't want to courier it. Come and get it from Brentford and I'll even stand you a pint in the Griffin. I'll try and put a pic or two up tonight.
