1. West London based. 2-3 minute originals and maybe some obscure covers. Bass and Keys in place. 60s garage band meets 70s punk power pop. Will be a bit lively. Update.... Looks like I just need a guitarist now. Coming together nicely.
2. My JB75NA deko. I don't like the natural finish chopping board look on my basses so it's been sprayed Twilight Blue with matching headstock. Will have it back lacquered and ready for assembly on Monday. The paint looks amazing in reality. My photography is not much cop. I got the paint job as a favour too.
3.
In the 60s it was still a common practice for even the biggest bands. When The Beatles first toured Australia, Ringo was sick. The Beatles toured with a dep.
And when Macca snuffed it...
4. You know how you never see white dog poo on the streets anymore.....
5. Thanks. I shall keep an eye out for one.
6.
The body is hollow and lined with foam to prevent feedback so they are about the same weight as a standard 4-string bass. Despite the fact that it's a rare colour that is massively overpriced.
What's the going rate for one? I really like the look of these.
7.
I know exactly where you're coming from Ad....
You're hired. 1 down 2 to go
8.
I would always say yes and see where it goes. Several times I've joined a band which was only 50% what I liked only to have one of the guys say, "are you interested in a side project?", which has always turned out to be 1000% better.
I see your point. Normally I might do. But there were only two of them and they were definitely not up for what I have in mind, I am fairly sure I'm a one band at a time sort too. My brain can't take more.
9.
Good luck to you... sometimes there is no option but to put it all together yourself. I did the same thing last year. I was looking for a hardcore metal band to do on the side or my main projects, playing the specific stuff I was into. But after alot of searching, auditions etc nothing quite felt right.... In the end I bought a guitar, wrote a set of material and held auditions to fill bass, drum and vocal duties. I've got a great bunch of guys together now all going in the same direction with the music... hopefully gigging in a month or so.
That's really good to hear. Gives me hope. There's naff all money so it should be what gets your pulse racing. After not writing a song for nearly a year I have a head full of ideas know I know what I want to do. I am just about to start bashing them out. I've a dozen or so incredibly obscure covers chosen to get the project going too.
10. Four. I really don't need four. One for sentiment. A P Bass bitsa with a Jazz neck that I put together from bits I sourced here and there when I caem out of bass retirement 12 years ago. I can't bear to sell it as it was my kick starter. Two is the one. 2007 US P bass bought new. Tried loads. This was the best by a way. Never let me down, Like an old comfy pair of brogues. Three for the ego. Managed to bluff an endorsement with Eastwood and was sent a rather nice Stormbird. Looks good and plays well. Can't get rid of a good blag? Four is a whim. I got the Harley Benton Deko bug. A Jazz I can shove in a corner as a spare or use for weight training. Owes me pennies. I only really need the Precision and maybe a spare for peace of mind. Need and want rarely coincide though. As some people in W4 know too well...
11.
So what`s occuring with the `sonics the Ad?
On sabbatical for an indefinite period until a certain member gets his mojo back. Not going to gamble on waiting in case it never comes back. It's a shame we're quite good.
12. It's a shame they weren't horrible and/or the music sucked. I knew we'd get along and have no issues with the day to day stuff. I can see I'm going to end up in a band with unreliable unloveable idiots on my musical wavelength
13. Got in touch with a singer/gutarist/songwriter just down the road from me in Hanwell W7. Really good songs. Lots of interesting bits in them. Has a good drummer already on board. Played through three songs last night. He has plenty more. The songs are thoughtful and soulful. Plenty of space for dynamics and well crafted. Wants to do some interesting covers too. The guys are lovely. I thought I would be up for the challenge. But...I was really having to rein myself in all the time. The tempo felt too slow comparted to what I'm used to and none of them started 1-2-3-4. I now know what I want and it's a really tight 60s garage mixed with punk full on rock and roll band. So I will start recruiting for that. I don't want to waste their time while I'm waiting for that to happen so I had to write the 'thanks but no thanks' email this morning. I feel like I've drowned a kitten. Everything was a good fit apart from the music. If anyone is interested in filling the low end slot I can pass your details on. Would suit a melodic player with a bit of Motown in them I would think. A very interesting project to work on and two lovely blokes to play with. Ah well. Onwards and punkwards.
14. "Your guitar was made at the Fullerton Plant (Fender - CBS Era), USA in the ear(s): 1972” Is it a Van Gogh or not?
15. So. You get your bass, amp and cab sorted for 'tone' and what happens? You compete with a noisy drummer, the guitars are too loud, the keys are swamping your sonic territory, the room is making it all sound weird and then you are at the mercy of what the person at the desk does with your DI signal through a dubious PA. I think any reasonable cable that works will do and is the least of your worries.
16. Dammit. I should read before I post.
17.
If I might refer you to the OP: Tried out one of the current Hagstrom 8-strings yesterday but it was thoroughly meh and really rather badly made too.
Skim reading. Bad habit. There's the hens teeth Shergold Marathon 8 strings. Warmoth do very nice looking 8 string necks. You could go down that route. 18. Hagstrom? This is a re-issue. Don't know if they're any good. Saw Nick Lowe use one of the originals a couple of times and it sounded great. 19.
I've owned 1978-1984 Avon SG/EB0 bass - yuk Shaftesbury Rickenfaker semi - dull thud Ned Callan thingy - Very 70s Shergold Marathon - 1968 Fender Precision - bought for £250 in 1979 1984-2003 retired 2003 on 70s Ibanez Silver Series P/J - Nice but very, very heavy MIM Jazz bass - Nice but bland Jazz necked Precision mongrel - assembled myself from bits* Starfire 80s bass - Really horrible. May be destroyed in a video or something* Ibanez AGB200 - On a whim. Fun but not my style Shergold Marathon basket case - Just about saveable. Going to be a long term project* 2007 S-1 Precision with a wizard thumper and no S-1 now - I'd say better than my old 68. Love it.* * = still owned
Interesting to read back after 6 years. I forgot all about that Ibanez. The Starfire got a bit of TLC and donated to No.1 son. Now gathering dust. The Shergold is still a basket case. Hidden away in an old case. The Mongrel is still with me. I think I did a good job, Nice bass. The ex S-1 is still my number 1. Best bass I've ever had. One day I will ebven learn to love its 3T sunburst. Now looking a bit 'roadworn' here and there. It's never let me down. Additions Eastwood Stormbird. Blagged an endorsement from Eastwood for the Jetsonics guitarist and me. It's fun, looks cool and is very giggable. Harley Benton £31 JB75 Deko Jazz. Currently being resprayed (freebie) as I'm not fond of the Ikea chopping board look. Stupidly good for the money. I still miss the original Marathon I had. I've remembered a natural finish 60s Epiphone Rivoli I briefly owned about 1980 to balance the forgotten Ibanez. Looked lovely. Just went plonk. I've a lot to learn about GAS.
20. As long as Clarky is in charge of the task force we'll be alright.
21. Looks great. Spill the beans.
22.
Metallica - St Anger. Nuff Sed.
Wasn't the therapist was the filter? I can really hear those motivational post it notes on that album.
23. The fan base. It's too old for one of them now....
24. I see no one has gone for Ian Dury's 'Plaistow Patricia'.
