I bought a JMJ last week. I'm really enjoying it...... apart from the flats. I'm sticking a set of medium scale D'Addario Pro Steels (45-100) on it next week. I'll let you know how I get on.

After a proper set up I agreed to keep with the flats for a month or so as they seem to suit it.

it’s playing really well now and I’m trying to adjust my playing by using a thinner plectrum with a lighter touch. I normally bash away at a Precision with a 1.07 big triangular job. I suspect I will end up with roundwounds though.

I know this is probably heresy but.....has anyone changed the flats to rounds on their JMJ? Now I think the flats it comes with sound awesome, it’s the nicest stock sound of any of my basses but the tension is just too high for comfort for me. Can anyone recommend a lower tension set that would work or god forbid a set of more compliant rounds?

  3. Orange Terror 500. I loved that beefy sound. It was the best I've come across at sitting in the mix with a noisy trio. I didn't and still don't need a versatile amp.

I only got rid of it as it was an early hot DI model that no amount of frigging around with xlr attenuators could satisfactorily sort. I was playing 95% DI'd gigs at the time. I might have to get one of the new ones if the DI is fit for purpose now. I'm very happy with my current TC Classic but it hasn't quite got the 'in yer face' of the OTB.

Well the Vintera arrived and it's awesome. I needed to change the strings to some Labella flats, and that really brought it to life. The weight is just right, I've not weighed it but it's comparable with my lightweight ACG basses. And it sits well too, rests more horizontally than my other basses but it's no bother, so no neck drive issues.

    That looks lovely.

Being a left hander options are always limited, but when this range was revamped I really took a shine to the CV 70s Jazz in black. I thought it had a beautifully sleek look and I've always wanted a bound/block necked Jazz in a solid colour. I had the chance when I bought my last decent bass from Guitar Emporium, put plumped for a '62 PB instead of the '75 JB and then the wonderful Fender Japan instruments ceased to exist.

I took a visit to a local nationwide guitar shop who had one in stock. It was superficially fine but it had a broken tuner on it which hadn't been noticed. A bit of a shame but they said they'd order me one in. Whilst I was there I tried out the 60s P and was quite surprised by how good it sounded and felt - easily as nice as the Japanese one I sold when I gave up live playing.

Collected the 2nd Jazz over the weekend, and when I got it home the bridge had been put on it so clumsily, so it looked like this:

Was not impressed so took it back to the store and swapped it for the 60s P which I'm absolutely loving. Really shocking QC from the factory on this one. Really disappointed. I think me and 70s Fenders aren't to be 😏

I worked in a music shop late 70s as a yoof. To be fair that is period correct for a lot of Fenders output at the time.

I have that page open for the last few days right on the edge of clicking!

£319 at 9 months interest free. Was rude not to. If I get on with I'll probably be ordering a b/w/b scratchplate as I'm not a tort fan. I'm hoping this will be a good garage/punk machine.

  7. This was how it ran best in my originals band.

Run through the set once. Anything that wasn't nailed or was new play again Have tea and biscuits. Try something new until it stopped being exciting. I would normally bring in some lyrics and we'd go from there. Discuss the set/songs. Maybe change or retire an older one. Have a quick run through of songs that needed it again. Help the drummer pack up and check the diaries.

I’ve used an RH450/210/112 stack and it sounded great, plenty of power and a nice core tone to it.

Probably the rig I've still got ;)

I can't see any reason to change. Loud, light and compact.

  9. John Hall was Brentford's right back for a while when we were in the 4th Division/League 2 about 10 years ago. Lovely hair and quite stylish. Couldn't defend for toffee. Looked more a 5 string Jazz player if I'm honest. Doesn't help this thread much I'll admit.
