Fender Precisions - they're fantastic
Low End Bee replied to Ham fisted Bass's topic in Bass Guitars
I can't stand the P-bass, I love the vintage legacy en all but the sound is woolly, clanky at times and I just hear my finger squeaking and beating on the strings. Has a really boxey sound and it doesn't stand out whatsoever. I prefer something with a hell of a lot more drive - to my tastes bass should be as loud as guitar. I loathe being called the quiet one, if I played one of these I would never get noticed. The neck doesn't feel too bad, but it decreasing speed of playing massively! I also prefer resting my thumb on the edge of a soapbar on a four, as an anchor, instead of a screw. I dont like the look either unless its sunburst, tort and rosewood (has to be rosewood!! or it sounds too thin) with ashtrays. I'd buy a 62 RI cos of the look when its slung low, but i'd end up selling it due to the weak sound. The PJ configuration sounds a lil better but again too wooly. Overrated massively, can get that sound on many a bass.
Too right mate. They should all go in the skip. -
I can't be a rebel if everyone else is playing a Precision too.
-
I'm not happy with this Precision love in. They're rubbish. Go and play a Jazz or a Warwick or something. They're miles better and have more varied and useable sounds. When I was a teenager I'd stop following and cross out the name from my exercise book of a band once they'd been on TOTP. I don't want to play the 'popular' bass.
for cost effective fuzziness, the Bass big muff can't be beaten really.
I'm having a lot of fun with mine. Using it on two songs now and the rest of the band like it too. The dry setting makes it very useable.

I dont like my band - standard rant number 202

Time to start your own band. Maybe get on a Hawkwind forum for recruiting. -
My current theory is thinner teardrop shaped ones probably work better for people who don't use them all the time and big thick triangles work better for agricultural players like me who don't use fingers.

Heads down, no nonsense, mindless boogie

Wait until you hear the A&D song HJ -
I was briefly in a bass , drum + singer trio in around 1981! I just had an overdriven sound which I supplemented with a Wasp synth with the notes written on it in felt tip that I would 'play/prod' in between playing notes on the bass. We were so ahead of out time....unlistenable It'll be hard to get this one right. Good luck.

Lots of Super J basses, where are the Super P basses?
You got a problem with gold plate?
Don't like it. Then again I don't like licorice but I'm happy for other people to eat it. -

I like the single pickup two knobs thing. Just like if I were a guitarist I'd have a Les Paul Junior. Extra strings, pre amps and pickups and it's not a precision to me any more. Block inlays and fancy cosmetic stuff (apart from gold plate) is fine by me though. -

Super Precisions? It'd be like putting Carlos Fandango Wonder Wheels on a Transit van. -
I ordered some DR Black Beauties from Stringbusters as they seem to be the very thing according to some on here. The .45 G sounded like a rubber band on a shoe box so I emailed them expecting it to be a pain. They called me on my mobile next day apologising for not getting back straight away and I had a replacement the day after in the post. Top customer service. The strings sound great. I'm guessing the lower tension will take a while to get used to after years of Rotosound RS66's. Still feels a bit odd at the moment.

How the hell do some people treat their basses?!
Low End Bee replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
A few little dings on mine from jumping about at gigs. I intend to use and keep this one for a long time so I look after it but accept it will get more battle scars as the years pass. I don't like grimy, dirty basses that smell of mouldy cellars. The Shergold I'm rescuing was like this and is still a bit whiffy after several goes at cleaning. -
What are you listening to right now?

The Trojan Suedehead box set. It's a very good compilation. Where's me crombie and tassled loafers? -
"Core Tone" isn't very important in your bass.
Low End Bee replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
Also, of all the bassists you've heard of, how many could you say have a signature tone? Squire, Geddy, Jamerson? It's the way they play, the notes they choose, the music they play which are the true identifiers, not the tone.
I'm up with those cats. Plus I have my own sound. It's a winning combo. -

I'm sort of with you. The ergonomics of the Precision I really get along with. It feels like a comfy pair of slippers. Plus I like the look. If the unamplified sound is good it is far easier to get an amplified sound I'm happier with. I do just like one core sound that I change once or twice with a pedal to suit the song. I actually would like to have a sound that is identifiable with me. Obviously if you're not playing bonehead music like me and need to cover a lot of bases knobs and switches are useful. I think there is an extraordinary amount of tosh spoken about 'tone'. After all it goes through magnets, cables, circuits and vibrating paper. That's why I prefer to call it sound instead of high falluting tone. Then again if you're just being naughty Silddx I have bitten.... -
That's lovely. I've got a bit if a yearning for a sort of Plonk/Zemaitis bass. Something in between this and the Greco would do me.

Steve Hillage....... Can you play UFO. I like that one. How about a Pink Fairies tribute? I'd prefer the Kings of Oblivion era. This is great. Can we all live in Squats and smell of patchouli as well? -
thanks for the replies TBH I didnt think that anyone would reply as I get a bit bored reading these types of threads. Still just for the record we're a trio and as far as I'm aware the drummer is keen to do original stuff as well. In addition to this is the complication thats its a social thing as well and we go to gigs and have beers together. I suppose I'll stick it out and look for something else in the meantime
The bloke who's announced the change of direction is therefore technically a 'mate' and not your boss. You're in it for fun. Tell him it's no fun to play his bass lines exactly as written. Mayvbe write a few tunes yourself and bring them to the table too. It matters not what your standard is compared to them. Are you a group? Or are an egotists rythm section/backing band? Original stuff is 100 times more fun if everybidy can contribute freely. I have form in this. -

Start your own band. Put your own ads out stating the kind of stuff you want to play and the kind of people you want to play with. As a reasonable chap you might just attract like minded people to you. The day people tell me what bass line to play is the day they get precisioned. He sounds like an arrogant ****er. -

We're hired to play his birthday party in April too. Mark Baker Mark Baker is also a mate of mine. He's getting back into music photography from art/still life work.
