1.
If you play avant garde music, you can just fart at the appropriate point. Or jazz.
Fart a top E? Blimey, that's some control, that is...
2. Whaddya mean "soon"? We've even had people not look at us, presumably to prevent us becoming intimidated by all the scrutiny...
3. If it's Wigan, it's gotta be bagpies... We do this one, but we use keyboards for the first spasm*, perhaps a cheap melodica might be a good idea? * Ohhh, I'm keeping that one...
4. Played a similar setup not long ago - farmer trying to make his barn a wedding venue, no sound damping, precious little heating (a couple of those jet engine warmers) and a limiter set to Sparrow's Fart mounted on the wall right next to the edge of the stage. The drummer clicked us in for the soundcheck, and his sticks made the light go amber... We'd had no notice of this sort of restriction, so we immediately went and found the bride and groom and explained the situation. They weren't happy (they weren't happy with lots of things already, including the aforementioned heating) but at least we had them on side. We offered them an acoustic version of our set, but they wanted the full nine yards, which they got, albeit at conversational volume. It's never good when you can hear people's feet shuffling on the dance floor... It was a twitchy, unsatisfying gig. Bottom line, though, was that we made sure the people paying us knew the restrictions we were playing under.
5. I slipped off to Bass Central for an afternoon last time we were in Orlando, there's also Guitar Centers around the place - think the US PMT. Yup, Tech21 (that new Bass Fly Rig is a bargain over there compared to here), DR Strings, and pedals (you'll need another DC adaptor for the UK, but they're not much) all worth picking up for suitcase-stuffers. I'm still kicking myself I didn't buy the Tonehammer 500 I found on sale at a GC, it was a complete bargain.
6. FWIW, I think some opinions on Class D are behind the times with the newer generation of amps which have come out recently - I'm thinking about the Magellan, the RM800, the Subway, etc. Understandable as there's relatively few of them about.
7. I've recently bought a Genzler Magellan, the new Class D amps are very good indeed. If you liked your Streamliner (I had one of those for a long time), you'll love it. A very flexible, versatile amp which takes its cues from the Shuttles and Streamliners but improves on both significantly.
8. I'm a big fan of the Precision sound, I have split-coils on most of my basses in more or less the right position to get it, but I've never rolled the tone off that far for more than the odd song, and I need a much wider range of sounds on a gig: from hard attacking pick to slap to the more, erm, 'neutral' sounding stuff. On that, I can't actually think what the bass sound for Carmina Burana, Mozart or even the Lighthouse Family would be. I'm guessing 'vaguely chunky thud' possibly covers it? I can get a lot of tones from all my basses with my hands and onboard EQ (and pickups) which cover all that. And none of them are Precisions.
9. Those. Warmoth do a scratchplate for a jazz that has a cutout in the right place for a P-in-a-J (it's not exactly where the J-pickup is): I had one (the bass, not just the scratchplate) and it did sound very very P-like.
10. It's mostly subjective, there's joys in both handmade luthier works of art and simple functional instruments. Is a £500 instrument 5 times better than a £100 one? It's a completely spurious question. I've gigged (last year) a £35 (new) bass (is one of the OPs £400 basses 11.43 times better?) at a function where the price of a ticket was £150, but I love my Shukers and Dingwall. There are no right and wrong answers to this one.
11.
THAT'S what I wanted to hear!
Yup
12. I'm afraid I can't help with the A-B thing (have you no rehearsal opportunities to do this? Might be worth calling one on a spurious pretext...), but I'd like to thank you for the Spinal Tap dwarves dancing round a stack of One10s...
13. This looks great, can't wait to see how it turns out. It looks so light it might even start a Best Lightweight Paint? thread...
14. I've got an iPad holder for a stand, I use it when depping or when we're doing the acoustic duo/trio thing, as there's a completely different song list. But it doesn't go in front of me, I use the bottom of an old stand and it sits by the amp, pointing sideways - I'll look at it to refresh my memory of the song, but then walk away. Only if I've never played the song will I look at it more than that... I think they look arse from a performance point of view, and let's face it, if we're not actually performing from a visual point of view, we may as well sit down and save our backs...
15.
Bugger, I'm away next week, I'll miss the sale on Monday
Like you're not going to be trying to log on from a coconut or something by the second day...
16. If you want to be able to switch between Sabbath and Marcus instantly, there's only one head which can do that...the Magellan. Ultimately, though, it's down to how you liked the amps when you tried them with your fingers, your bass, etc... Maybe try them again, and take your cab(s) down, too - they can have a big influence on the sound, too.
17. So what's the electronics in it at the moment? I'm not clear on that. The black finish: what's that, exactly? Is it reversible, at all? Cheers, Muzz
18. Everything other than basses (two in a dual Mono bag) and cabs (Roqsolid covers, one in each hand or on a collapsible trolley if necessary) goes into a laptop rucksack thing I've had for years - head, leads, BDI21 just in case, spare batteries, strings, etc, etc... Piece o'cake...
19. I've watched a fair chunk of it, and Richard Hawley was the best thing by miles for me...
20.
No doubt a great piece of history but I think it's one of the fugliest basses I've ever seen!
I'm afraid this for me, too. That...scratchplate...
21.
And the market is so wierd - around the same time period new Stingray £375, sold mid 80s for £475 (to pay a rates bill - yes really.....).
Yup, Rays were at least sellable - I couldn't get any interest in the Ric...I also had a 70s Precision (can't remember the year) which went for bugger all, too. I'm talking £200 or so... I may just have been a numpty, tho - I replaced the 4001 with an Aria ZZB Custom, and I was delighted...
22. Bought a new Jetglo 4001 in 79 for, IIRC, £700. Sold it five years later for £195. Not so much of a hit at the time, but now...eek Oh, and I've just remembered, I sold my Ampeg B25-B head around the same time...I can't remember what I got for it, but I also can't remember it being enough to actually spend on something else, so it won't have been more than £100...
23. Add a second cab if you can - the difference is night and day (even with BF cabs, and you won't get much louder for the size/weight) - I run 2 or 3 112 Bergs like Chris B did, and I can go very, very loud without a zillion watts.
