1. Rereading the original post, are the 'woofy' comments coming from a gig? The AE112s are rear ported, so there might be an issue if they're hard up against anything behind them, etc. Just a thought...
2. Wedding gig in marquee at post country house hotel with worst in-house 'PA' I've ever encountered: four down-pointing flat speakers across the front of the dance floor, 90db compression limiter, no monitoring possible, we had to set up across the side of the dancefloor, at 90 degrees to the line of the PA speakers. You could hear people's feet shuffling on the dancefloor. We switched to the singer's solo acoustic set early doors so we could have a look at the in-house setup, and managed to get a bit more out of it, and the gig improved from there. Early finish ruined by the A1 being completely closed at Scotch Corner, the diversions were nonexistent, it took 45 miles and an hour and a quarter to get back onto the A1 ten miles south at Leeming. Pfffftttt... On the upside, I sounded great...
3. Yep, if it's wooly, it's not the cabs. I'm running three (or two, or one, depending on the gig) AE112s, and they sound really good with my Magellan. They also sound good with my Walkabout.
4. Yup, I have two sets of moulds: one with the 15s in for going to other people's gigs, and one with monitors in when I can get a feed from the desk. Essential kit.
5.
The ones that were in the shops i visited in town today were around £300, i found a second hand one for £280 but it was buzzing all over the place. Id on't know if they are USA ones or whoever. This is the problem I have; I don't know all this secret manufacturer stuff and I don't want to commit to something without being 100% sure
They'll have been the newer 'Sterling by Musicman SUB' - they're the cheap ones to which I was referring. You won't find a new USA Sub anywhere: as I said, they were discontinued a good while ago.
6. It's apparently from the METAL world, soooooo... I kinda like it: if you're gonna go over the top, go over the top
7.
The 'proper' music man basses are very expensive, these ones are about £300. Are you sure they are better?
A secondhand USA SUB can be had for £350 or so, when they come up - they've been discontinued a while now. The SUB/Sterling new ones are, as I said, a different thing altogether, a much cheaper bass in every respect. The USA SUB Ray is pretty damn close to a USA Ray (£700 up secondhand) if you're on a budget.
8. Depends which ones - the USA Subs are basically MM basses with a cheaper finish, they were so popular they were discontinued, because sales of the 'real thing' went down. I've had both, and there wasn't a whole lot between them, certainly sonically. The Sterling SUBs are a different (cheaper) bass altogether.
9. Depends how many hundred a few hundred quid is, really, and how you're defining 'cheap'. If by 'cheap' you mean low quality, then the MIM Fenders have a good rep which takes them out of that area. there's lots of options, especially secondhand, but again, it'll depend whether you're talking £300 or £600..
10.
If you play avant garde music, you can just fart at the appropriate point. Or jazz.
Fart a top E? Blimey, that's some control, that is...
11. Whaddya mean "soon"? We've even had people not look at us, presumably to prevent us becoming intimidated by all the scrutiny...
12. If it's Wigan, it's gotta be bagpies... We do this one, but we use keyboards for the first spasm*, perhaps a cheap melodica might be a good idea? * Ohhh, I'm keeping that one...
13. Played a similar setup not long ago - farmer trying to make his barn a wedding venue, no sound damping, precious little heating (a couple of those jet engine warmers) and a limiter set to Sparrow's Fart mounted on the wall right next to the edge of the stage. The drummer clicked us in for the soundcheck, and his sticks made the light go amber... We'd had no notice of this sort of restriction, so we immediately went and found the bride and groom and explained the situation. They weren't happy (they weren't happy with lots of things already, including the aforementioned heating) but at least we had them on side. We offered them an acoustic version of our set, but they wanted the full nine yards, which they got, albeit at conversational volume. It's never good when you can hear people's feet shuffling on the dance floor... It was a twitchy, unsatisfying gig. Bottom line, though, was that we made sure the people paying us knew the restrictions we were playing under.
14. I slipped off to Bass Central for an afternoon last time we were in Orlando, there's also Guitar Centers around the place - think the US PMT. Yup, Tech21 (that new Bass Fly Rig is a bargain over there compared to here), DR Strings, and pedals (you'll need another DC adaptor for the UK, but they're not much) all worth picking up for suitcase-stuffers. I'm still kicking myself I didn't buy the Tonehammer 500 I found on sale at a GC, it was a complete bargain.
15. FWIW, I think some opinions on Class D are behind the times with the newer generation of amps which have come out recently - I'm thinking about the Magellan, the RM800, the Subway, etc. Understandable as there's relatively few of them about.
16. I've recently bought a Genzler Magellan, the new Class D amps are very good indeed. If you liked your Streamliner (I had one of those for a long time), you'll love it. A very flexible, versatile amp which takes its cues from the Shuttles and Streamliners but improves on both significantly.
17. I'm a big fan of the Precision sound, I have split-coils on most of my basses in more or less the right position to get it, but I've never rolled the tone off that far for more than the odd song, and I need a much wider range of sounds on a gig: from hard attacking pick to slap to the more, erm, 'neutral' sounding stuff. On that, I can't actually think what the bass sound for Carmina Burana, Mozart or even the Lighthouse Family would be. I'm guessing 'vaguely chunky thud' possibly covers it? I can get a lot of tones from all my basses with my hands and onboard EQ (and pickups) which cover all that. And none of them are Precisions.
18. Those. Warmoth do a scratchplate for a jazz that has a cutout in the right place for a P-in-a-J (it's not exactly where the J-pickup is): I had one (the bass, not just the scratchplate) and it did sound very very P-like.
19. It's mostly subjective, there's joys in both handmade luthier works of art and simple functional instruments. Is a £500 instrument 5 times better than a £100 one? It's a completely spurious question. I've gigged (last year) a £35 (new) bass (is one of the OPs £400 basses 11.43 times better?) at a function where the price of a ticket was £150, but I love my Shukers and Dingwall. There are no right and wrong answers to this one.
20.
THAT'S what I wanted to hear!
Yup
21. I'm afraid I can't help with the A-B thing (have you no rehearsal opportunities to do this? Might be worth calling one on a spurious pretext...), but I'd like to thank you for the Spinal Tap dwarves dancing round a stack of One10s...
22. This looks great, can't wait to see how it turns out. It looks so light it might even start a Best Lightweight Paint? thread...
23. I've got an iPad holder for a stand, I use it when depping or when we're doing the acoustic duo/trio thing, as there's a completely different song list. But it doesn't go in front of me, I use the bottom of an old stand and it sits by the amp, pointing sideways - I'll look at it to refresh my memory of the song, but then walk away. Only if I've never played the song will I look at it more than that... I think they look arse from a performance point of view, and let's face it, if we're not actually performing from a visual point of view, we may as well sit down and save our backs...
24.
Bugger, I'm away next week, I'll miss the sale on Monday
Like you're not going to be trying to log on from a coconut or something by the second day...
