1. Ouch. On the other hand, it's saved me from some serious GAS...
2. They're very idiosyncratic: the necks don't have truss rods, so they're very chunky, and they ship in a kind of half-finished way - not in a playing/setup sense, but the finishes are kinda rough, and they have an artisan feel to them. Having said that, the one I had was the most organic, responsive fretless I've played: it positively sang. They're nothing like a factory product, but then (other than this one) they're not in that cost ballpark. I'd still have mine if I wasn't such a hamfisted fretless player, and if I ever really wanted to go down the fretless route again, I'd look for another.
3. Yep, Andy sent me a set of LEDs recently - they (the originals) were all blown, and there was a dry joint in a related resistor: he sent me a circuit diagram which helped diagnose this, too. Top chap.
4. The Elixirs I put on 30 or so gigs ago are still nice and bright, and the coating's still good after battering with a pick (Dunlop Nylon 88) all that time. Just bought some XLong ones for the Dingwall... Dramatically better than any previous coated strings I've used. Not a lot of use for the thudders amongst us, but for the rest...excellent.
5. I have two sets - one I use with the attenuators for gigs (mine and others), the others I have monitors in, which I use for gigs where I use in-ear monitoring, and for home rehearsing, listening to music, etc. I can wear them for hours without discomfort, they're invaluable. I also use them in work when I'm in the data centres, they're fantastic for this, too. Oh, and under my helmet when I'm on a bike....
6. I've had very similar to these, and they were very good. Eventually I got some custom fit ACS Pros, and they're even better - I wear them to concerts and pub gigs, too. Proper attenuation, rather than just muffled reduction in SPL (which is what the foam ones do).
7. We had a dep who turned up to a wedding gig an hour and a half away without a kick pedal... Now THAT'S a bad drummer...
8. Sounds really good - yep, no tweeters needed there. I wouldn't have bought my Bergs if I'd heard them with the tweeters on, but with them off they're bang on the sound I like - the difference in the cabs is startling. I've had the same experience with BF cabs (S212T and BB2), Markbass (their tweeters are really horrid) and others. The only tweeter I can recall liking at all was the one on the Roland DBass combo/extension. Even then I only had it on a little. I play with bright stainless rounds, pick, slap, all sorts of tones. Good news is it's always cheaper without a tweeter...
9. Yup, my Shuker does a very very good P impression without looking in the least P-like. Jon's actual P copies are even closer, and his build quality is exemplary. Risking a good lynching here...I like the sound but not the look of the Fender P...
10. Minimum this sort of thing - http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000UJ8RHE?keywords=etymotic&qid=1447668913&ref_=sr_1_8&sr=8-8 But you've only got one set of ears, so if you're gonna start gigging regularly, I'd look at getting a set of custom mould ACS Pros. They're fantastic - I use them to watch gigs, too. I've got tinnitus, trust me, you don't want to wait till it happens...
11. Yup, I'll give this a go if it gets to the North West
12.
Yes, but I should imagine Bass Gear have a phone number direct to him with no waiting.
What, an international phone call for a prospective technical enquiry? No thanks.
13. In the studio, yes, all other times, nope.
14.
Or did you mean a bass that has a split pickup and sounds like a P that is not necessarily P-Bass shaped..?
Pretty much everything I own falls into this category...
15. Just as an update, I've heard from Tommy now.
16. I had a technical question, rather than a sales enquiry. Where better to go than the guy who designs them?
17. Playing a gig in a rock club in Manchester in the 80s, we were on a 3ft high temporary stage, and in a fit of overenthusiasm I jumped ever so dynamically and cracked my head on one of the roof trusses. Bit a chunk out of the end of my tongue and landed heavily at an angle, which separated one of the stage blocks by a couple of feet. Played the rest of the song in a daze and an enforcedly heroic* stance while trying not to throw up, dribble too much blood or pass out, until our roadie got back from the bar and spotted my predicament. Apart from that, the gig was a total disaster... * Legs akimbo by just a couple of feet too much
18. Yeah Michael, it was when I'd corresponded with you last month. Sent a couple of emails. As I say, a shame.
19.
I have to agree. Tommy was brilliant with me. Hopefully he will get back to you soon. It's worth the wait!
Nope, this was the 22nd of last month: I bought a pair of Bergs instead in the meantime...sale lost and ball dropped from his perspective, but I'm happy with the Bergs.
20. There was a thicker/wider neck option available for Warwicks a few years ago (there still might be), and if it's any wider than the 2000-ish 5-string Streamer I once picked up, it'll be like trying to strangle a giraffe one-handed...
21. Had quite a few, currently on my Dingwall, Thunderland and Shuker basses. Very handy, tho yeah, you kinda need to learn the knack of getting them in tune, but after that they're very handy.
22.
To me this is the part of pub gigs i dislike when there is no stage. We did a gig on halloween with no stage where a drunk bloke kept standing in between me and the guitarist and singing through our mics. Then he started putting his arms round us while singing while several times knocking mic stands over as he walked past. Annoyingly as he was a regular all the punters and landlady found it highly ammusing. Thankfully there were no breakages but it was annoying to be going on pretty much all night
Personally, I wouldn't have put up with this, regular or no regular. Anyone onstage (or in the stage area) who hasn't been invited gets politely but firmly ejected straight away. If I/we have to stop playing to do it, then that happens. If you need to get the punters onside then you can laugh it off with "If you want to join the band you'll have to join the queue and audition when you're sober" or "Cheers mate - don't ring us, we'll ring you" or somesuch. Drunks have very little perception as to when something's no longer funny, so we nip it in the bud i.e. the first five seconds, otherwise, yeah, they just keep doing it...
23. Contacted Tommy a couple of times to ask about the cabs - got one reply saying "I'm a bit busy, I'll get back to you tomorrow." Nothing after that. Didn't hear anything else, which is a shame. The good news is I'm enjoying the Bergs...
24.
That's a very good point. I guess not - I'd be changing for the sake of it, really.
And we know what happens a week later... I'm the same, though - I only realised when I came to tell someone recently that I've had 11 heads in the time I've had my Streamliner - good job I kept it to compare, otherwise I'd have been frantically trying to get another. And they're a lot more commonplace than your Walkabout...
25.
No stranglers without Hugh imo, this is no slouch though
That's ace - I notice JJB's still struggling with 'wooly' Ashdown cabs...
