1. I had a B20-8 a long while ago, and it had the most vicious neckdive of anything I've ever picked up, plus a really odd v-shaped neck. It broke strings quite a lot - there's some serious break angles where they've run the strings to get all them on. That said, I'd probably have another, just for the nostalgia... I've got a Dean Edge 8-string, which is very well built and sounds great - well worth looking at.
2. Erm...a US Stingray doesn't have a 'thin and almost jazz-like' neck - quite the opposite, in fact. A US Fender P is more than a grand new nowadays, I'd say they were in the same price bracket...
3.
Something like this you mean?
Aaaaaarrrrrggggghhhh!!!!! I'm completely happy with my basses, I'm completely happy with my basses, I'm completely happy with my basses, I'm completely happy with my basses....
4. I've had five Rays - I love the idea of them, the look of them (especially the sunburst/maple), the design of them, even the sound of them...when other people are playing them. I recorded part of our album with one, but live...not for me. Whenever I haven't got one (like now), I'm always susceptible; even after five, I know damn well if a nice sunburst and maple turned up, I'd be all over it...that's GAS for you...
5. EB make a Ray with a narrower neck, it's called a SLO Special - they're not exactly common, but you can get them. The Sterling has a narrower neck, too.
6. Just to clarify, Cyrene isn't able to proceed with the transaction, so this is back up for sale. Ta,
7. Thanks guys, yep, it's a nice bass. Oh, and....bump!
8. Lovely amps, the last one I'll buy. Bump for compact, powerful valvey goodness...
9.
Montrose, by Montrose
This, in spades. A genre-defining album.
10. Oh blimey, I'd forgotten about this one. Still for sale, pre-Xmas-type bump...
11. As part of my pre-Xmas clearout, here's a nice Vintage 1004DX. I bought it because I'm a sucker for a nice piece of wood, and this is very nice wood. All gold hardware, and the Wilkinson pickups and EQ give a good range of very useable tones. These were the top of the Vintage range. It's not my style of bass, I've never gigged it, it's been a house bass, kept as a very pretty thing more than anything, and as such it's completely unmarked and as new. I've just weighted it, and according to my digital scales, it's 8lb 4oz. £245 posted, well packed and insured for mainland UK. 12. OK, with Xmas rapidly approaching and wanting paying for, I'm having a clearout, so here's a Roland Bass Micro Cube RX, a cracking little practice amp - Aux in for MP3/iPod/iPad, Headphones out, tuner, half a dozen amp models, effects (Chorus, Delay, T-Wah, Reverb, Flanger) and even an octaver. It'll run on the mains or half a dozen AA batteries. Full details here: http://www.roland.co...ails.aspx?p=940 Bedroom use only, it'll also keep up with acoustics for rehearsal/singalong type of situations. It'll come in its original box, with power supply, carry strap, etc. SOLD to Geoff, thanks guys.
13. I'd go for the joke anti-Valentine's with I Hate Everything About You by Ugly Kid Joe...
14. Only ever broke one string gigging - at Jillys rock club in Manchester in the 80s - the core went on the A and I tried to pull the thing off, which lacerated the palm of my right hand; blood everywhere, very rock 'n roll, but it friggin hurt... I take two basses to every gig, not broken a string since.
15. I run a 900w Streamliner into an 800w-rated cab, never given it a second thought. I listen to what I'm playing, and I'd hear the thing struggling. The only time I'm cautious is when I use the octaver. I guess if you use heavily distorted or driven tones it'd be harder to spot, though.
16.
What the build quality of these cabs like? They look quite 'DIY' in the photos I have seen?
I've been gigging a Schroeder 1515L for two or three years now, build quality is great, it doesn't have a cover but still looks good.
17. There are undoubtedly people with natural aptitudes in every area, and the lucky ones get to find out what that is, and have the opportunity to develop it. How far they then get is, I think, a matter of the degree of aptitude and also their own drive/desire, and of course the application of lots of hard work. Scott LeFaro came from a musical family, had studied music since he was five, and spent a quarter of his life playing the bass - I stand to be corrected, but I doubt he ever had to hold a mundane job down or do anything that wasn't involved with music in his whole life. In that respect, he was very lucky. He could also have been a blinding talent as a plasterer, but we'll never know
18. There's a couple of Schroeder 2x12s in the FS section, too - very small, light, and in a band mix, very very good. A friend of mine uses one in a band, and it more than holds its own against two half stacks...
19. The S12 is 4 ohms, using it with a Compact (8 ohms) will mean presenting a 2.666 Ohm load to the amp, which will release the magic smoke... You can use both cabs together, but you'll need a special speaker cable to do so, tho that'll mean they're in series, and presenting 12 ohms - the PF might struggle to push them.
20. At the moment (and it does change quite regularly), it's a toss-up between Van Halen's Jump and Luther Vandross's Never Too Much... I may be musically bipolar...
21. Awwww, I thought this was a completely different sort of thread...I was gonna suggest something light and swingable...
