I'm tending to agree with this approach, although mine at the time (a few years ago now) was to buy one of each, try it and then sell it on. The Streamliner stayed longer than most...I did think the Magellan was the best of the whole bunch*, though, and still do... * And by 'bunch', I mean the 6" x 8" x 1" Class-D amps, a la MarkBass, Tonehammer, GK Fusion, etc, etc...I've had 'em all...well, most of them...
-
They made plenty of Precisions over the years with slimmer necks...to be fair they did start in the days when bassists were transitioning from (and frequently still using) double basses, so at the time it must've seemed like a toothpick...
-
Shame, you missed out on a good amp...mine had the LEDs blow, it was a £20 repair...nothing else so much as flickered in a lot of gigs...I rather liked them... The Magellan's a better amp, tho...and no lights...
-
Yeah I had one, too, but those concave chrome knobs always had reflections (they do in that pic, too) that confused things...
-
This course (probably the cheaper one as I seem to be permanently skint) is on my Bucket list...having been to Jon's place quite a lot I'd love a week there...lovely bass, btw...
-
...depending on the sensitivity of the speakers; through the same ones, yes, but more sensitive speakers will get more db from a watt... If you ran a 300w amp into a single 10, even if it's thermal rating was 300w, it wouldn't be enough in a loud band...even Barefaced say as much about their One10: 'Loudness - Any jazz gig. Rehearsals or smaller gigs with typical function bands. Stack a pair to handle louder rock bands or bigger gigs.' ...but we digress; back to the valves... 🙂
-
A teensy bit off topic, but speaker sensitivity is the key to volume; I regularly gig (well, back when we were allowed) a 300w (non-valve, hence the off topic bit) head with a BF Super Twin, and it's plenty loud enough, even up against 2 x Marshall 100/412 geetards and a shed-building drummer...

I've owned three; I love the look, despite my neck preferences (broom handles can be a bit big for me) I loved how they played, and I love other people playing them, but they're just not me. I kept buying them (before they hit four figures) and then moving them on, I've reconciled myself to that now. I have a Shuker with a MM pickup in roughly the right place if I need that sound... I have a similar relationship with Rickenbackers....

A few popular classics? How very common. I hope everyone sings (or hums) in tune, at least... 🙂 -
Aaaaand I've just gone and listened to it...was never a fantastic song for me, but now I'll never unhear all that mooomfy noodling...jeez...

It charted earlier this year... I do think you're over-thinking 'a sad 37 year old man trying to be popular to 20-somethings', tho - it's the band, not you, and a good song is a good song whether it's a year old or decades old. IME, 20-somethings will dance and sing along to songs they know just as well as anyone else, and if you're playing popular music, that stretches a long way backwards and forwards. The real tricky bit is playing stuff punters will know, but not necessarily the same old cliche'd stuff like Sex On Fire...at least not all the time... Take Go Your Own Way; OK, it's 44 years old, but if there's a better guitar-based song for getting all the girls (yes, the 20-somethings, too) singing and, where possible, dancing (which, incidentally, will get the blokes singing and dancing, too), I've yet to encounter it. I'm 20 years older than you, and I'm never sad about playing for girls to sing and dance, no matter what their ages... -

For something more current, there's All You Ever Wanted by Rag n Bone Man...although it's basically Sex On Fire, just moved on 20 years... -

Get the singer/guitarist (same person in my pub band) to do it acoustically, you can nip to the loo, too... -

The good news is from a bass POV, you can learn a couple while the kettle boils...if they'd paid Guigsy by the note, he'd still be on the dole... -

...or putting sticky cocktails on the subs... Edit: Erm, that should've been one post up... 😐 -

Are there any songs you do like your loads of drunk blokes singing at the top of their out of tune voices to? -

This is a good point; most of the Oasis stuff works very well as an acoustic singalong (especially things like Half The World Away), or part-acoustic (Don't Look Back In Anger the band comes in on the chorus, kinda thing) - plenty of space in the arrangements for the unwilling bassist to go and have a right old sulk...or, as I mentioned earlier, go and order a round... 🙂 Edit: If you do, I can recommend taking your bass with you: it helps to underline the fact that you might be in a bit of a hurry* * Being bassists, no-one will have noticed who we were onstage, so the visual prop is sadly necessary... -

I think we gig for different reasons. And in different pubs... -

There's lots and lots of songs like that; just watch the audience instead... ...or, if you've got wireless, go and order a round while you're playing it... 🙂 PS Don't forget to tell them the singer's paying... -

Anyone chucking anything out of a pram about doing Oasis covers is missing out on happy punters and big singalongs; like it or not, they're the Beatles for at least a couple of newer generations... -
Gotcha...re-reading, they seem to think that the alternative to not paying for live music would be to not pay for recorded music...if that's the case, they haven't really thought it through...
-
I play in a couple of covers/wedding bands. For those, we expect to be paid (especially the weddings), because we're good at what we do. We've done a few favours in terms of free gig slots for people who've helped us in the past, and if the pubs on our circuit reopen for bands with restrictions, we expect the money not to be as much until the pubs can pack em in as before. Anything personal, like benefits for people we know, etc, are a different matter. I also play in an originals band, we're preparing to do a few festival gigs for nowt (tho we'll sell merch), and we'd all kill to play Glasto for nowt...there's exposure and there's Exposure... In terms of the OP's festival organisers, I'd be interested to see how any of their excuses for non-payment for music would go down with the PRS if they were pinged playing records...

This. Our singist is very keen on harmony vocals, and was (note the 'was') a firm proponent of the 'everyone can sing' school of thought. It took about an hour of my honking and hooting to change his mind. He looked broken, defeated, and well he might. Though your similie was eye-wateringly memorable, I'd modify it slightly if I may: my voice sounds like a bull elephant who's just had it's penis stepped on by another elephant. More surprise in the tone, y'see... 🙁🙂
