Jean Jacques Burnel. 15 seconds into Hanging Around, and I knew I wanted to play bass. An epic bass tone that defined the band, and, for me, has still never been bettered. I've spent the last 35 years trying to get that sound juuuust right... π

I'd say the series wiring is well worth a try - in fact Fender did this themselves with the short-lived S1 switching. I had one, and liked it* * Tho as I'm not a fan of bridge pickup burp or both-pickups scoop, I guess I would...

It's clearly a Write Only document from his POV... π€

Great stuff, and, much as I defer to no man in my admiration of Barefaced cabs, that Ashdown stack looks...right. And sounds it. π

Yup, just like that, tho with a lighter, much browner board. I've some wood dye I was thinking of darkening it with, but it may do as it is. The VW was the main deal, as it's gonna be a one-gig bass, for a 30-year reunion of an originals band I was (and now am again) in. I had a VW 3000A back then, and this is close enough. The Boardwalk, Manchester, 1989...I had a better back, back then... π

Hokay, sooooo after a dalliance with a 1024X, which proved to be too heavy and too big in the neck department, I've got hold of a 414VW, and for what I need, it's much, much better: lighter, slimmer neck, and a P-pup as good as anything I've heard. The J-pup is nice, too, but this being me it'll never get used... π I might change the tuners for some Hipshot Ultralights, and if a bridge comes up the BBOT is getting replaced, but other than that I'm a happy chap. Oh, and possibly a brass nut...but it doesn't really need it; that's just me GASing for tweaks... π

Itβs definitely intermittent: as I said, the following day I had it in use for much longer (4 hours) without a twitch, although it was much cooler and the unit itself wasnβt running as hot. When it was dropping all output, I restarted it the first time, but then noticed the second time that tapping switch 3 brought it back. Odd, but as Al says, it sounds more hardware related than software.

I've done a looong subsequent rehearsal with it (4 hours) and it was fine...I'll keep an eye on it, but one more blip and it's going back for a replacement.

Still not a patch on Bakithi's sound or playing...but then he's kinda unique... π It was finding clips like the one before which kept me going when I was trying to get it right(ish)... π Here's Bakithi doing it...to be fair, even he looks like it's hard work, but sound is sooo much better; 3:35 or so...

On that, mine failed several times on a warm gig recently - tapping the tuner switch (I have mine set as simple patch up, patch down, tuner) brought it back to life, but it was very disturbing. It seemed to be very hot...

Ohhhh, ISWYDT... well played, sir π

As long as your chops were up to it...

I work in a company that is an ISP and provides all sorts of Cloud and Hosted services...when we get one of these calls it's tools down and gather round the lucky recipient. Best we've had is 36 minutes before they hung up in frustration...we have a sweep running for the longest, the winner buys drinks at the Xmas Do... π

I had a 410HR (the smaller rear-ported one) for a while (until it was nicked, in fact), and it was a very good cab. For Β£350, that'd be a great one-cab solution. It was pretty light (50lbs or so, IIRC), tho a bit...cubic to manhandle, which made it a two-handed lift. If you like the sound and decide it's a keeper, castors would be your friend*. π * Apart from, like the original Daleks, in Stairs Situations... π

My Walkabout's as quiet as a mouse, fan-wise. With a good efficient cab(s), it can be thunderous. The overall impression, though, is of valvey warmth....

No Elixirs at PMT, the richest they do is NYXLs...I'll phone Symphony, cheers

Mine's got Dingwall pickups (P-Tone neck and Humbucker bridge) and a John East U-Retro, soooooo...pretty much anything, really π For the tonewood types, it's an Epiphone alder body and.a Shuker Birdseye maple neck...see the first sentence, tho... Brass nut, Hipshot hardware...oh, and the worst upper fret access in Christendom π
-
Does anyone know if there's a stockist in the North West for Elixirs, by any chance?

Ooooo, I hadn't seen this one...here's mine π

Wedding gig in a bar/pub in Boothstown*, actually the publican's wedding, so it was full on. Not too much to remark upon, other than the ongoing delight of lovely quiet inears, and the host offering us another Β£50 each to play another 5 songs, but the evening saw the debut of our BL's new Country-inspired** song. Rather than describe it, I'll simply quote his intro: 'My missus has been asking me for ten years to write her a song, because all my other songs are about my exes. So I have. This one's called 'Who needs Google when your wife knows everything?'... * For anyone not familiar with this charming hamlet nestled hard by the East Lancs Road, if I said the buffet included a large steel tureen crammed with doner kebab meat, you'll have an indicator... ** He's discovered the subgenre of Comedy Country (starting for him with 1978's delightful Conway Twitty/Loretta Lynn duet 'You're The Reason Our Kids Are Ugly') , and he's all about it now...

That's the way I read it, and it kind of works inasmuch as a lovely new bass can be lovely all over again with some new strings, or a setup, or just a good strip and clean: kinda topping up the loveliness... π

I note that the two main ways to prevent Hedonic Adaption are Appreciation and Variety...notably, Variety is about 'When a positive change first occurs...say...you get to take a long bath in your first soaking tub...but over time...youβll be happier with your soaker tub if you run out and get yourself some new bubble bath, or try lighting candles' So yeah, go ahead and get a new rig...you're psychologically justified... π Actually, don't - the Three Gig Rule above is a very sensible one...
