  1. Now here's a thing: I don't like Jazzes, I don't like rosewood boards, I don't like blocks and binding...but maaaaaaaan, I like these. How does that even work? πŸ˜•πŸ˜€
  2. Yep, I'd agree with the above - I played it twice over the weekend in two different pubs: in the first, it went down well, in the second it was met with blank indifference. It's nice to have in the arsenal, but it needs the right audience. Oh, and I've got the sound nailed with my Helix Stomp πŸ˜€
  3. Yup, I had one early on, moved through a lot of other cabs (including Bergs, other BF ones, MB, etc), and I've now got another for backup/stack duties. Great cab.
  4. Well, that's all respect for JB out the window, then. The worst type of guitarist mentality, and an admission of his failure to do what so many contemporaries have done, and that's make modern technology work for their sound. Here's some quotes from a guitarist who is a peer of JB's, Paul Gilbert, who has spoken a lot about his tinnitus and his onstage headphones: "The purpose of my headphones is the same as the more common ear molds: to block out the stage volume while giving me a controlled mix and volume from the monitor desk...Do you wonder why concerts are always too loud and sound crappy? I wondered until I realized it’s me! Sorry!...I would definitely trade some head-stuffed-into-the- 4x12-moments in exchange for getting some high-end back into my ears." Now that's a proper (and better) guitarist... πŸ˜€
  5. That's gonna look awesome down the Fox And Gynecologist...
  6. I spotted that, so I just went and bought it for Β£20 on Amazon. I'm looking at it as Β£40 saved... :0) I once happened on a Terry Pratchett book signing at a small independent bookshop in Lancaster*, when I had the brand new book (in hardback) under my arm, having bought it earlier in the day from Waterstones or somewhere. On shuffling into the shop, I picked up a cheapo PTerry paperback (of The Unseen University Challenge) for him to sign...Terry grinned at my plastic Waterstones bag hastily shoved under my coat, took my paperback and wrote "To Muzz...your starter for Β£3.99..." 😁 * Full disclosure: I saw a queue lining up out the door, and joined it on spec, then asked what was happening afterwards... πŸ™‚
  7. Whenever someone gets on their hind legs to make a pronouncement like this, I always think it reflects more on them than any actual phenomenon they might think they're seeing...
  8. I'd agree that the very worst communications I've had are from the lowest value items, the absolute nadir being when I offered two pretty good sofas for free, the only condition being they were picked up. The number of 'Will you deliver?' messages was in equal parts annoying and depressing. Other than one protracted conversation, the gist of which went: "I'll have those two sofas" "Fine, when do you want to pick them up?" "I haven't got any transport, you'll have to deliver them" "I'm sorry, they're pickup only. Like it says in the ad." "But I haven't got any transport" "Sorry" "But I really want them, i just haven't got any transport." "Well, you haven't got two free sofas then, either." That one was alllll annoying...
  9. That Forty Eight...eeeeek πŸ˜€
  10. If you're after a chunky amount of power, I'd look at the heads with the current generation of power modules (the Quilter, I think, falls into this category) which are around 800w; I had a TH500, but never really liked it all that much, and thought it was a bit gutless in comparison, and I agree completely about the MB heads being competent but a bit bland. My favourite (that I've owned, which doesn't include the Quilter, but includes an awful lot of other Class D heads) was the Magellan, which I'd say is the most flexible of the lot, tone-wise - it's got effectively two channels which cover a lot of ground, plus the power is...plenty.
  11. Just a thought - if you wanted to tidy up the gaps around the pickups, I bought my covers and rings from here: https://www.crazyparts.de/mounting-rings/pickuprings/index.php Black with chrome pickup covers and rings? Ooooo.... πŸ˜€
  12. We used to do this in a band waaaay back, and IIRC we just picked a key the singist was happy with (again IIRC, it may have been D) and went from there. I play at home with headphones using an iPad app which can adjust pitch (helpful for things like ACDC, which seem to be in some odd Antipodean key, possibly something to do with the way water goes down their sinks...) so you don't have to tune your bass to the track...
  13. How about some shorthand for the split? I'd vote for 'Dinosaurs' and 'Weirdos'...
  14. Love it...and positively upper-fret friendly in comparison to mine πŸ™‚
  15. No One Knows...I'd had a bass set up in Drop C#, but hated the flappy strings (and the spare bass for one song); got the Stomp, took the relevant preset, dropped the pitch to C#, saved it as another preset, job done πŸ˜€
  16. Does anyone know if the R400 will run below 4 ohms? It's clearly in my ballpark given the Walkabout has stayed with me longer than any amp ever, but the Walkabout's clever trick of running down to 2.67 ohms means I can use my fave 4+8 ohm (or even 3 x 8 ohm) cabs...
  17. I got it from my grandparents, aaaaaages ago...and it's technically the original form: 'spitting image' is the eggcorn πŸ˜€ 'Spitting image is the usual modern form of the idiom meaning exact likeness, duplicate, or counterpart. The original phrase was spit and image, inspired by the Biblical Godβ€˜s use of spit and mud to create Adam in his image.'
  18. We played my favourite gig on Friday as a last-minute cancellation (we're there again a week Satdy, but as discussed elsewhere, it's the Champions League Final that night, so it might be an odd one), and it was the loud (actually too loud, but that's a long and tedious story), lairy, singy and rambunctious evening we always enjoy. One odd addition this time, though: a punter who looked the spit and image of a Greg Allman waxwork left too near a hot radiator*, complete with shoulder-length grey locks and velvet jacket, kept walking through the dancing throng up to the singer, standing right in front of him (just that bit toooo close for comfort) and looking at him like he was trying to work out if he knew him from somewhere, then strolling away. We play on a foot-high raised stage, but even so... He repeated this several times. The singist was more spooked by this than the occasional outbreaks of violence this venue is prone to, and I don't blame him... πŸ˜• * I was originally going with Jim Steinman for this one, but when I checked myself vis-a-vis Jim, he looks delightfully like Michael Winner on Cowboy Night these days:
  19. I run my Walkabout with a Barefaced 2x12, and it's very, very loud (as in 'keep up with a loud drummer' loud, which is all anyone needs before PA and monitoring pop into the mix*), and not inherently boomy at all - I'd concur with the 'set it flat and just use the bass, mid and treble' controls. The only thing I do with the Para (unless I'm in a truly horrible room) is dial the two left hand knobs fully anticlockwise, to cut 30Hz. I then add this back in if the room/stage can cope. Oh, and with the 212 it's also very portable - I bought a padded plastic toolbox thing from the now-defunct Maplin, and it's a very easy safe carry, especially with a 38lb cab (with wheels πŸ˜€) * Although I also have a BF 115 to pop under the 212 when I'm feeling I need a stack, and then it's even louder...stooopid loud...
  20. Whilst glaring at the drummer, obv... πŸ˜€
  21. Completely agree; I think the technical term is 'fwubbb'...
  22. I took my lad to see Oldham a few years ago (and no, they didn't lose 😏), the same as when my Grandad took me when I was a kid*, and he was much more interested in the halftime pies...I gave up then, and looked at it as a lot of weekly cost saved... * His first choice was OT, us being Manc Reds and all, but OT in the early 70s wasn't exactly a kid-friendly environment...
  23. I play in a function trio which covers (har har) everything from Johnny Cash to Muse, and I've moved to a Helix Stomp (via a Zoom B3/MS60B) which allows a lot of flexibility, especially around songs in dropped (or raised) keys - the Stomp has a fantastic pitch shifter. I won't need anything else; just one small box for the lot. Plus it's a whole lot of fun playing around with the sounds...and it works with backline or DI/IEMs...
