Perfect sense Rumple thanks, i'm not too bothered about winding a string wee bit past the silk but like you say it's not ideal and with a fat B string to contend with as well ....i'll look into doing it as a string through

I agree, the darker fb looks even better and the 33" scale is super nice (imo).
Is the through body stringing an absolute necessity or is it do-able without ?
(Im doing a 33" 5er myself at the moment )

Cheers Andy just using up offcuts and old stuff. I bought the top as part of a back n side set (it wasn't expensive so ...had a punt) but never liked it, it was very roughly sawn and manky looking so it got thrown in the pile to maybe use as an accent layer. Anyhoos i came across it again recently so cleaned it up and it turned out better than i thought . I still have loads of satinwood and a little makore left over for the neck and the braz mahogany strip came from a plank i must have bought at least 10 years ago from David Dyke. (Only dust and finished stuff leaves my shed!).

Tweaked the body design again and i'm much happier with this , think i may finally have the shape i want nailed, admittedly it's kinda morphed into something that could be a tad 'generic' looking but it's just where it ended up through a Darwinian process of evolution. (phew !)

So there's just enough time to tackle something else and i fancy a 5'er, loads of wee bits n pieces on the woodpile to use up ..
So it's a 33" fretless 5 on the go now.

The back is a 'mahogany' that's been around the shed for years. The neck has a centre strip of brazilian mahogany, then satinwood and finally makore on the outside.

Used a hardwwod ply for some contrasting lines (salvaged from the side of an old wardrobe nice one Blablas )



The walnut bass has a few coats of lacquer so plan is to use the shed for the 5'er first then finish them both together.

I can remember in the early-mid eighties you could barely give these away, wish i'd stockpiled a few.

Like a lot of things in this game then , benefits seem plausable but remain completely unproven and subjective, more down to marketing decisions than fact ............

Totally agree with Andy and ask what problem are they actually solving? it's not dead spots for a start (which i have never actually personally encountered).

10mm would be a lot for me, 6mm would be around my range ...still be muttering 'whits the point?' though.
So im going without then, good thing about just going this yourself...if it does all go tits up it just gives me a good excuse to slip out of the madness for a few hours and build another one

I suppose if you are building to sell you wouldn't want to lose a sale cause you don't have them, so it's just as well to bung 'em in and go along with it.

Nice one Andy never thought of this, i have a few old stunt kites in the attic from wen i were a lad, could up-cycle a few rods...who remembers Peter Powel stunt kites ? aaahhh takes me back ! Great prices too (compared with Stewmac).

Interesting thoughts from everyone, not everyone seems convinced on how effective these really are...i always kinda suspected they were a load of bullsh1ttery myself especially for a 5'er .... but if XXXXX does it so should I cause in MUST be better etc etc etc

Anybody recommend be a supplier of carbon fibre neck reinforcers? ......anybody do them in the UK?
Thinking of doing the unthinkable (a bass with more than 4 strings... )
For a 5 String --- Seriously ....do i [b]really[/b] need them ? Anybody build or built a 5'er with a truss rod only?

I have to admit that in all my years i have never seriously played a 5 stringer , never mind built one.

Any Tips/thoughts would be appreciated.

Wandre basses are pretty rare nowadays, pretty awful sounding too i believe.

Still waiting on fretwire, had to send to Stewmac in the end to get the same stuff.

Been seriously close to chopping an inch off the bottom horn, there's something around there im not 100% happy with.
I have however, been here before and merrily got to work with a tenon saw and regretted it right after (project was binned !!) so just going to leave as is this time around, it's a very minor thing. I will fiddle with the design on paper first before (if) i build another.

Nice to hear from you Nugget !! Whats happening ? Got any builds going?

Ran out of fretwire (well ...cant find fretwire ..its my age, im sure i had more).
So drilled the oles and schlapped a few coats of lacquer on.

Stunning Jabba, absolutely first class Reminds me a wee bit of my old Manson Merlin.
Do you have a full bass shot ? ..would be nice to see the whole thing again
