Shortscale and sparkly. On a budget. By a Beginner
Woohoo, glad to see this one finished!! It looks great, I bet it was a bugger getting the finish smooth with all that glitter! Sounds like you found a smart way of doing it though! Bet it looks killer in the flesh. You glad to have it finished? Hope the shoulder is on the mend!
Cheers Rik. Shoulder will never be 100% (damn rugby), but we are getting there. I'll be honest, it isnt smooth as a gloss finish, and you can definitely feel the flake. But its not like sandpaper either. Kind of inbetween! I am happy with it though. Looks wise. Just gotta sort the electronics out and it'll be gig ready. Definitely happy it's finished though -
See if you have a say on what drums your drummer uses and what guitar is used etc. Sounds a bit ridiculous to me mate. They've asked you to play bass, so unless it was a tribute, your choice of equipment shouldn't be down to anyone else surely? Especially if its just because of how it looks. A swift "Feck off" should do it
Stuart Zender.
Yup. He's definitely my favourite too. Really used to like Dirk Lance, not sure what he is doing now
Excellent work! Please feel free to pass on any other tips that occur to you. Flake is involved in one of my future build daydreams (build 4 or 5 - a 34" scale 4-string, single 'bucker passive archtop bass with scrolls and translucent red base & gold flake... or something audacious like that!)
Thanks! I have been pretty honest about the process. All the difficulties i came across are on here. I think if i did it again i would have worried less about removing the paint initially and trying to get a good smooth finish. It really didn't make much difference because after adding the flake, you couldn't really tell what the finish underneath was like anyway. Again, this totally depends on the method you choose to use. One other thing, if you do use this method, be very liberal with your coatings of clear laquer and flake. All the flake that doesn't take, you can re-use on the next layer anyway. I like the sound of your build! Look forward to seeing it -
It looks great, when you see the close up you can see the proportions but the green really does come through when viewed as a whole. It's quite surprising really.
Yeh it is a strange one. I've shown a few people and asked them what colour they thought it was. All of them said green. -
Sounds a very good way of making sure. I'll bear that method in mind in case I ever get asked to do one...
Honestly, this was exactly what it said in the title. A beginner build. I am happy with the end result, but it's because i went in with my eyes open! If i ever did another sparkly build, i would probably use the spray gun, and pre-mix the flake. I know how much of a perfectionist you are mate, i dont think you could cope with this method haha -

Thanks Andy. I actually expected more purple to come through, as there were equal amounts of the three types of flake, but the green seems to be the predominant colour. I'm fine with that though, as i do like it. Hahaha it's actually not too bad, but that's mostly because i put about 10 clear coats on. It definitely was more work than i initially imagined!! The glitter is very stuck. But that's because i "added" a step to my method. I realised there was a lot of loose flake. So after every coat of clear, i let it dry for a night, then took the bass off it's hanger and shook it to remove all the loose flake onto a big bin lid. That way, every time i was adding a coat of clear, i was adding it to a stuck layer. Hope that makes sense -
That's a unique looking bass. I love it.
Thanks, that was my thinking when we designed it. If it was a custom build, i thought i should make it as unique as possible. Andy is fantastic

My custom build from AJR guitars (Andy of this forum) is as good as any other custom build i've played. Better than most. 100% individual spec too. I'm aware my spec might not be to everyones taste, but i made it for me, not for opinions It has been featured as bass of the week here: http://www.notreble....singlecut-bass/ Worth sending him a message i reckon

Bit of a delay on this one, i dislocated my shoulder early January and had to take a break. It's finished now though. It's really hard to get a good picture because it looks different depending on the light and where you are standing! Here it is though : I am happy with how it looks. Had this kind of thing in my head throughout the build, and i'm pleased with the end result. Lots of mistakes made along the way, but definitely lessons learnt too! It isnt ready to gig though as there is a hum when i plug it in. Sounds great, but the hum annoys me, so there is probably an earthing fault somewhere. I will take it apart and see if i can find it soon -
Finished! And now for something completely different ...

Looks fantastic. Congratulations, Andy for another superb example of your craftmanship, and Nic for getting the bass you've always wanted! Glad its met your expectations otherwise i may have felt a little responsible -

Cool song. Nice one

Wow, that is a bargain, i'm tempted and i dont even play 5 string, let alone 6 string!

Less on stage volume = better front of house sound

Hi G, i assumed if you were endorsed by Markbass you'd have to stay with Markbass gear? I've always liked the Markbass kit i've played through, and if you do too, then just get another 102 to beef up your sound? Markbass cabs certainly work best with Markbass heads IMO. Cant comment on the PJB kit as i've not played through one. The Bergantino HD210 is brilliant though. I had one of those and loved it. Probably a little heavier than the Markbass, but i preferred it.

Just been building up the clear coats this weekend. Here is a close up of the flake though, as i feel it gives the best idea of what colour it looks like: -
