1.
Nice, like that lots. out of curiosity what happens when you put the serial number on the neck plate into the F database?
Cheers. I have no idea!! Didn't even think to do that. Feel free to have a go
2. Well i needed a bass that i could take to some gigs and not be too precious about it. I had a Limelight previously, and always regretted moving it on. Obvious choice....get another Limelight. I went for something a bit different. Purple body, with a gold anodised pickguard. Heavy relic'd maple neck in jazz spec sizing.. I know the rules, here are some pictures: I have had a play of it without it being plugged in and it pays brilliantly "straight out of the box". Action is perfect for me. Low, but not low enough to have any fretbuzz, and high enough so i can change the tone, if i should want to. Sounds louder than any of my other basses unplugged, but that could be the new strings.... Anyway, i have high hopes for the bass having owned, and been impressed by Limelights before. Hard to comment on the finish for obvious reasons! But it looks great to me. Does it look authentic?? I don't think i can say it does because there probably wasn't many purple Fenders in the 70's. But does it look old? Yes. It really looks like a bass that has been well played. Neck feels great. Really "worn in". Well balanced bass too. Not sure how much it weighs, but it feels fine for me. The good balance probably helps this. Look forward to giving it a blast with the band! Special mention for Mark, owner of Limelight. He was brilliant throughout. Really accommodating, and super helpful.
3.
That's a lovely little ditty to kick us off this month. Nice barky tone there as well... I've not really used harmonics in a piece before... Everyone else seems to make it sound so natural, always sounds a bit like I've put them in for the sake of it when I try.
Thanks. I panned towards back pickup so that might explain the barkier tone. I only used the harmonic once when I originally 'noodled' the piece. But the harmonic is a G, and the piece was vaguely based around G major, so I thought it served well in tying it all together.
4. I'll go first then. I have a busy month so may not get another chance to record one if i didn't do it today. Agwin, apologies for stealing your spot Here's mine: https://soundcloud.c...-fied/andromeda Recorded straight from bass into garageband. No amp simulation, 7% reverb on my AJR singlecut. Hope you enjoy Just listened back to it for the first time, i should probably have used some compression!! Sorry about that
5.
Game on
BIG JON IN THE HOUSE
6. I can do the 16th so i'll be there too. Wont be able to stay till 5 as i have a wedding gig in Swansea in the night, but i'll be able to stay till 3.30/4 I'll bring the singlecut Andy built. Probably bring my Warwick and Limelight too. I have a Kustom amp and a LM II And 2 X TKS S112s Look forward to it
7.
But increasingly I'm realising that the problems are really down to me
Took me a long while to realise this. GAS is akin to chasing the pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. The problem was usually me. Being too fussy about this or that. Things that had no real consequence in a band dynamic. There's nothing wrong with having GAS, but the harsh truth of the matter is we sometimes need to look closer to home to fix some of our perceived problems!!
8.
My other votes were FuNkShUi... that's a great riff sandwiching the slap section and I really like your tone as always. Have you ever played an Enfield bass? I tried one at the hearts bash on Saturday and it had a great modern HiFi sound with both pickups set to the humbucker mode... reminded me a bit of your tone. Long live the noodle bar!
Thanks Rob. I haven't tried those Enfield basses. There seems to bit a good bit of love for them, so no doubt i'll try track one down for a go at some point. Anyone down South Wales have one? As for my tone, again much appreciated but i cant take any credit really. My monitors aren't working, so i don't hear any "amplified" version of my sound until i hear the actual recording. It's for that reason i run straight into garageband via a interface. Usually add 5-10% reverb too. The tone you hear is the natural sound of whatever bass i'm using, that i usually adjust the EQ on-board, to whatever i have in my head that i think will sound good. So really you just like the sound of my AJR or my Warwick streamer......GAS??? I voted for Rob, Asambique and Elephant Grey this month. Again, some really good entries, was tough to pick a favorite 3
9. Cracking job again Andy. Although i'm not surprised at all. Congrats Mick! Lovely looking bass
10. Really crappy thing to happen to anyone! Can i ask though, do you have an address for him? The one i'm guessing you sent the bass to? Surely that's enough to either go and look for it or to give to the police? Hope something gets sorted for you
11.
but adding a good tone to the mix must surely be better than adding a duff one, no..?
I'm sure many manufacturers pursuing "tonal excellence" agree with you Douglas
12. I think it comes down to how each of us play, and what we consider "loud enough" Some people play with a light touch, but want to sit on top of the mix. This isn't going to be enough for them. Some might play with a light touch, but like to be more in the mix than on top of it. This could work for them. I often go out to pubs when i have a weekend off to listen to different bands. It's amazing to me how some of them set their sound. There is no mix as such. Just two separate guitar players, and a bass player with no consideration (it seems) for how they all sound together. Granted, this is more of an EQ issue than volume, but because they dont consider the overall sound, everyone seems to try to push volume higher to be heard.
13. Good find. I've been keeping my eye out for one of these locally too. If you wanna sell it on for what you got it for let me know
14. I just voted after having a thorough listen. Really tough to vote this month. 7 votes..... so i'm guessing someone has only voted for one?
15. I would guess it would depend on the quality of the 12 you used....
16. Yup, i do. TKS S112. I'm in a 6 piece band. Guitar, drums, sax and keys with 4 vocals. We play at a level where the single 12 is enough. Although if we played any louder i would need to use a second. But before doing that, i'd just go through the P.A a bit
17. Looks great. Another super skilled BCer. Be great to get a sound sample of you get the chance
18. Just to say, i don't vote for myself. But as has been said, i'd be fine if someone wanted to. My friend wouldn't be interested joining the forum. Hes the guitarist in my band, so we wouldn't want him to join anyway
19. Just a thought, but does anyone vote for themselves? I have just shown my friend all the noodles, and asked his opinion on the 3 he'd vote for. One of the ones he picked as his favorites was mine (probably because i was standing right by him), but i explained i couldn't vote for my own. Then i realised that isn't really a general rule, just my own rule really. Some quality offerings again gents, i'm going to have a listen to them all again later with headphones on to pick my favorite three
20. Well done all. Some great tracks this month
21. Bass Gear was a brilliant place to visit. Get yourself in there
22. Congratulations to the Barefaced team!! Huge score for them. Bet that rig sounds a bit meaty too
23.
I came here looking to vote - after all it is my constitutional right
Does this mean we should start lobbying for your vote??
