1.
Hello, looking for a first bass, would like to play indie rock. I've looked at several basses in terms of new stuff, narrowed it down to the Peavey Millennium BXP 4 or the Hofner Ignition Violin Bass (feel this is slightly more on the novelty side though, anyone have any experience with overall sound quality/ease to play?) what do you guys think would be the better of the two? Ideally however, I would like a vintage bass, would be looking to spend £250-300 for the bass alone in this instance, happily pay more for other aspects of the set up - really struggling not only to know what is good in this side of the market, but where is would best to acquire one. Any advice will be greatly received.
Hi Will Firstly, if you are wanting to play indie rock, i'd go for the Peavey out of the two you suggested. Youll struggle to get a real vintage instrument for within your budget, but you might get a Squier VM Jazz . . One like this.... You can pick up some real bargains. Good luck
2. I enjoyed that. I enjoy Remco's playing in general too, so thank you for the link
3. Thank you for the suggestions everyone. Im struggling to find any to try out, which seems to be my biggest issue here
4.
H&K Red Box equipped amps are brilliant. I have a Tube 50 combo with one fitted. There is very little difference IMO between the DI output and the sound of the speaker mic'd up with an SM57.
Is there anywhere in the UK you can get these? I cant seem to find any...
5.
Great stuff... I might do something slapity next month in honour of all the guys trying out gear at the London bass guitar show.
I could also be persuaded....
6.
I've no idea why, but this reminds me of Nick Drake. Lovely!
Thanks. Now, I'm off to look up Nick Drake
7.
Next month I think I'll just do a bass line something low down that actually sounds like a bass!
I was thinking this too. Maybe next month the challenge could be the whole riff has to be played in first position?!
8.
overdriven, machine gun-style 16ths! Hopefully there'll be room for some of that too
Have you heard my entry for next month??
9. Cheers Twincam. Recording was VERY basic, but it's what i have time for/available. Thought yours sounded bloody good for an ipad infront of a cab!!! Liked the riff. The second phrasing reminded me of "Carousel" by Blink 182. I have good memories of those times!!
10. Here's mine: https://soundcloud.c...a-fied/noodle-1 Sorry for the lack of editing Free time is scarce in my house, so i recorded what i had in my head, and that will have to do! I've showed you mine, now lets see yours Recorded straight into laptop via garage band. AJR bass guitar. 22% reverb. Other than that, its a dry signal with no EQ tweaking, or no amp simulations etc. Like i said... no time
11.
Last week I used 2x TKS S112 speakers and the Streamliner 900. Each speaker is 8 ohm, rated up to 250W, so 4 ohm load. Streamliner can output 900W into 4 ohm. So I did not push it too hard just in case, but the two cabs sounded good yet it was clear they would not cut it in anything but small gigs or for onstage monitoring.
I can't imagine how loud you guys play if 2 X S112s will only work for small gigs or onstage monitoring!? Bet the 4 together sound amazing though!!
12.
Four? Do you play in stadiums..??
Exactly what i was thinking
13. I liked the main riff, and agree it should be the "home" . If you go off into something else, try to make sure you come back to it. Reminds me of something "Slaves" would play, and i agree with Douglas, i don't think it would sound good overproduced. Sounds raw as it is. I think it should stay that way. Get it a bit tighter for the recording and it's good to go. Think your bass tone works great with it too. Of course, these things are just my opinion
14. VERY pleased Hoping to do some recording with it this week
15. Well i think the inspiration bit could work on "genre", and then maybe whoever "wins" gets to pick the next months inspiration. So maybe they could choose "something inspired by Jaco" ? I dunno. . . . Might work
16. Yeh, give the drummer "the eyes" to check he knows to play a bar extra. If you know each others playing well enough, you usually know what the last bar of the solo sounds like anyway. So we usually let the guitarist go as long as their ego needs. We recognise the last phrase, and then back in together. No problem
17. I do feel very lucky! I understand that this wont be to everyones taste, and i'm fine with that. The whole point was to end up with a truly unique bass, that has the exact specifications i wanted. Fair play to Andy, he has put up with my suggestions, and guided me in the directions he felt would be best suited, and i couldn't be happier with how it looks. His skill is obvious for everyone to see. Im very excited to see how it plays I'll definitely sort a video out. Just need to decide how best to go about it to get a true sound of the bass
18. Not saying it's similar, as i havent played the 2 you mentioned, but the EBS TD650 runs down to 2 Ohms. Great amp
19. I'd certainly be more likely to take part, as the time of recording a full composition is what stops me usually. I always listen to the entries in the monthly composition challenge though
20. Love it. The contrast between the yellow and the dark fretboard look amazing
