Yeh, i think as a beginner to bass, i wouldnt get too concerned with the intricacies of what frequencies you'll hear etc. Get a small amp and speaker like the ones you've suggested, and just play. Play along to songs, play anything at all, just experiment and see if you feel the bass is something you'll enjoy. If you do get hooked, thats when you can start concerning yourself about the quality of your sound. For now, IMO, just get something cheap, that allows you to hear yourself. And enjoy

I havent played any of the newer Warwicks, so i can't comment on whether the quality is better/worse. But i would say if you are thinking of investing in a Warwick. i'd go second hand. I have a '87 NT Stage 1 Streamer, and someone described it to me like the Swiss army knife of basses, and i couldnt agree more. Its so versatile, i love it. I also have a '89 NT Thumb. Again, a fantastic bass, but a bit more "marmite".

Yeh that does seem a bit strange. Why would he turn something away that will only help him??

I was scared after the first song of our friday night gig knowing we basically had 2 full gigs to do. Lesson we have learnt is, be prepared for anything. Fair play to our sax player for stepping up and doing a good job at it!

[/quote] Our singers issue is he has never been in a band before. So this is all brand new to him. We have played about 10 gigs now, and his voice is excellent. But he has no experience. So all these remedies and potions other more experienced singers may have picked up, he has none. He had a cold the week running up to the gig, but his voice was fine so he thought he would be fine to sing. Hopefully next time, he will be a little more aware of how he's feeling.

[/quote] Yes we were lucky that our backing singer is competent enough to sing the songs on the Saturday nights gig as we couldnt arrange a dep. Good tips for the singer though, ill pass them on. So, we've just played a 2 gig weekend. No big deal, we have done it plenty of times before. However this weekend was different. Our singer lost his voice after the first chorus of the first song on the first of two nights. Playing "listen to the music" by the Doobie Brothers, and it comes to first chorus, and our singer switches to the higher harmony, so our BVs can do the easier lower part. No higher harmony to be heard. Second verse starts, and all i can hear is a strained attempt to sing, a few throat clearing noises, but still nothing that resembles a tune. We finished the song, with myself and our sax player singing as best we could. Went to speak to the singer, and his voice had gone. Not partly gone. Not "just a little croaky". Completely gone. We looked at each other hoping someone had a moment of inspiration. None was forthcoming. We played 4 or 5 more songs, that our sax player could sing, then called the mid set break in a little earlier. It was a 30th birthday party, so cancelling wasn't an option. We were lucky that a friend of the band lived 10 minutes away from the Friday gig, so she came down and saved the day. What would you have done? Anything like this ever happened to you? We did play the Saturday gig, without our singer. Although it was unlike anything i have played in before!

If given the choice to hear every song as it should be played, or having people busk their way through songs they aren't 100% comfortable with, i'm fine with a band using stands. I dont ever recall someone saying "That was a great night. The band were sounding awesome. I must say though, that music stand was off-putting. Really spoiled my night" Saying all this, i dont use a music stand. Never have. I prefer to learn the songs, so i dont have to be worried about whether i can see the sheets etc. I enjoy the gigs more this way.

Mine have arrived. How did you guys fit them? I dont fancy drilling into the neck of my 87 NT streamer myself!!
