1. Yeh, i think as a beginner to bass, i wouldnt get too concerned with the intricacies of what frequencies you'll hear etc. Get a small amp and speaker like the ones you've suggested, and just play. Play along to songs, play anything at all, just experiment and see if you feel the bass is something you'll enjoy. If you do get hooked, thats when you can start concerning yourself about the quality of your sound. For now, IMO, just get something cheap, that allows you to hear yourself. And enjoy
 2.
What's the little round fella on the back for? Oh and thanks a bunch for igniting my Dingwall GAS. Just seen this:
OOooOOooOOssssssh Noice
 3. I worked as a lifeguard, and used to ask our apprentices to sweep the bottom of the pool. Surprising how many people were willing to try!!
 4. Why not try this: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/251111-white-horse-gfm-80w-amp/ ?
 5. I havent played any of the newer Warwicks, so i can't comment on whether the quality is better/worse. But i would say if you are thinking of investing in a Warwick. i'd go second hand. I have a '87 NT Stage 1 Streamer, and someone described it to me like the Swiss army knife of basses, and i couldnt agree more. Its so versatile, i love it. I also have a '89 NT Thumb. Again, a fantastic bass, but a bit more "marmite".
 6. Yeh that does seem a bit strange. Why would he turn something away that will only help him??
 7.
If that was in my band I'd be suggesting a few sessions with a voice coach.
Yeh, it's being looked into. Although if anyone has some recommendations for vocal coaches in South Wales area, i'd be very grateful
 8.
Yeah that's definitely our singer. 5 redbulls and 40 fags a day is his way.
Hahaha i cant blame his diet/well being. Hes a pretty fit guy, builder by trade so he's always active and eating well. Just one of those things i guess
 9.
I was used to vocalists just turning up and singing, it's a different ball game for pro singers though, the warm up exercises and vocal warm ups that they do. If someone keeps getting colds and bugs, it could be down to poor diet, that can lower your resistance to things.
Yeh i think its made him realise he is going to have to go about things a little more methodically, rather than just turn up and sing.
 10. I was scared after the first song of our friday night gig knowing we basically had 2 full gigs to do. Lesson we have learnt is, be prepared for anything. Fair play to our sax player for stepping up and doing a good job at it!
 11.
Having a been a professional singer for 8 years, if that voice goes it goes.. simple as that. plenty of good advice on here from the guys. Just remember its not his fault. its not like he can just change a string and carry on.
He isnt getting any blame to be fair. The other band members are sympathetic as they could see how upset/dissapointed he was when he had to stop. I will be passing on all tips. Anything that can help is welcomed!
 12.
Grape based Alcohol beverages drank the night before appear to be an odds on for a bad throat for some reason.
Hahaha he has a lot of experience in this field of research
 13.
if it is because of illness, then not a lot can be done short of having a dep, if its that he cant do 2 gigs in a weekend then that is more vocal conditioning that he needs to work on
Yeh i am trying to convince him to have a lesson. Hoping that it will be good for his technique? He felt awful this weekend for having to stop singing, so i think he may be looking to get a lesson soon. Fingers crossed it will help!
 14.
I think a lot of vocalists know when their voice is likely to go... so they will have their soothing remedies, but I'd have no compunction about getting a dep in on the date and brain-storming a set that would get us through... Depends on the gig though.... and if it is really important, then the vox will be working on getting their vox in shape all week..??? hopefully.
Our singers issue is he has never been in a band before. So this is all brand new to him. We have played about 10 gigs now, and his voice is excellent. But he has no experience. So all these remedies and potions other more experienced singers may have picked up, he has none. He had a cold the week running up to the gig, but his voice was fine so he thought he would be fine to sing. Hopefully next time, he will be a little more aware of how he's feeling.
 15.
With no notice, it's a hard one but having a dep that you can call on makes a big difference. We took a gig that singer pulled out of with a weeks notice. I called a friend who is a pro singer and she said she'd do the gig no problem. The drummer then pulled out saying it wouldn't work and we shouldn't do the gig. So I got a pro drummer to dep for him. The singer sent us a list of the songs she knew from our set plus a load of standards that she did. The guitarist and I got together during the week and went over the standards. It was a smoking gig! Everyone was on their toes and if I'd been given the choice I would have continued from then on with that lineup
Yeh, i think getting a few deps in our phone book is the next thing for us to do!
 16.
It happens. This is why every band should have at least 1 competent backing singer who could take over. But saying that - how many singers do we know that actually look after their voices properly? I have Vocalzone ready at all times, and failing that sweet sherry to sip (only sip!) through the set. Or black very sweet tea. Strips the crap out of my throat. NO DAIRY! Even milk in the tea causes the mucus glands to kick in again.
Yes we were lucky that our backing singer is competent enough to sing the songs on the Saturday nights gig as we couldnt arrange a dep. Good tips for the singer though, ill pass them on. Thanks!
 17. So, we've just played a 2 gig weekend. No big deal, we have done it plenty of times before. However this weekend was different. Our singer lost his voice after the first chorus of the first song on the first of two nights. Playing "listen to the music" by the Doobie Brothers, and it comes to first chorus, and our singer switches to the higher harmony, so our BVs can do the easier lower part. No higher harmony to be heard. Second verse starts, and all i can hear is a strained attempt to sing, a few throat clearing noises, but still nothing that resembles a tune. We finished the song, with myself and our sax player singing as best we could. Went to speak to the singer, and his voice had gone. Not partly gone. Not "just a little croaky". Completely gone. We looked at each other hoping someone had a moment of inspiration. None was forthcoming. We played 4 or 5 more songs, that our sax player could sing, then called the mid set break in a little earlier. It was a 30th birthday party, so cancelling wasn't an option. We were lucky that a friend of the band lived 10 minutes away from the Friday gig, so she came down and saved the day. What would you have done? Anything like this ever happened to you? We did play the Saturday gig, without our singer. Although it was unlike anything i have played in before!
 18.
It seems it's an amateur thing, thinking it's unprofessional to have stands and music on stage.
I agree with this. If given the choice to hear every song as it should be played, or having people busk their way through songs they aren't 100% comfortable with, i'm fine with a band using stands. I dont ever recall someone saying "That was a great night. The band were sounding awesome. I must say though, that music stand was off-putting. Really spoiled my night" Saying all this, i dont use a music stand. Never have. I prefer to learn the songs, so i dont have to be worried about whether i can see the sheets etc. I enjoy the gigs more this way.
 19. Mine have arrived. How did you guys fit them? I dont fancy drilling into the neck of my 87 NT streamer myself!!
 20. Congrats. Gorgeous looking bass, and i'm sure it sounds as good as it looks!
 21.
I'm just going to have fun and pick up as much as I can.
Good way to go about things. Having fun with it should keep you motivated to keep playing, and that's when you'll improve
