My First "Parts" Bass! - Finished
chriswilliams666 replied to chriswilliams666's topic in Build Diaries
Blimey, you don't hang about do you, I only sent that neck the other day! Glad you like it, it's a stunning neck and that bass looks really good, well done. I've got a bitsa bass myself which I might post here, although I didn't actually build it. Kets
Thanks Kets. The neck was the last piece of the puzzle! I can't get over how nice this neck feels too!
looks good. Yeah, maybe you didn't build it from the ground up or anything but at the end of the day you have basically got a custom bass now that is built using the parts you want and we all have to start somewhere with this whole bass building malarkey.
I kinda enjoyed doing it, alot! Think i will try my hand at constructing a jazz next!
Very cool, my personal preference on this bass would be to replace the black tuners with chrome ones, not because I dislike black hardware, but just to match the bridge and knobs etc. But other than that, looks really great. I've put together two parts basses, one is in the hands of Mythste now, and the other has been toured and gigged extensively and is just awaiting the neck repair back from Jon Shuker. I found both basses really enjoyable to put together, especially when a lot of the parts come from guys on the forum....kinda makes it feel like a group effort using my money haha. Si
Thanks for your input Si, i am going over to all black hardware. I'm after replacements on this thread. Can you help?
No, replace all the silver with black!
See above!
nice buddy. glad the pickups are to your liking
They Sound Killer Man.
Looks great Chris & I'm pleased you are getting more use out of (some of it at least) the bass than I did.
Thanks Burrito! I think i mentioned at the time i preferred Jazz Necks with the P-Bass Sound. It had to happen one day. I'm loving the Squier Classic Vibe and Vintage Modified Stuff! -
Hey Guys Not much of a build, but more of an assemblence of parts for my ideal bass. I wanted a "cheaper" bass to use for a couple of tunes my band play in a heavily dropped tuning, as i didnt want to be playing about with tunings and setups on my main basses. I've always liked the look of the Sid Vicious and DeeDee Ramones' P-Basses, but never got on with Precision necks. Also only wanted a volume control, but extra knob installed for show. So here's the parts list... Body - Vintage Modified Precision - Supplied by BurittoBass Scratchplate - Vintage Modified Precision - Supplied by BurittoBass Pickup - Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounder Electronics - CTS Pots, Knobs and Switchcraft Jack - Supplied by WD Music Neck - Squier Classic Vibe Jazz - Supplied by kets Neck Plate - Black Allparts Machine Heads - Black Gotoh GB9 Reversed - Supplied by Me! Bridge - BadAss II - Supplied by Bassmingo Was fun putting it together, and thanks to the above guys for helping me source the parts! This bass sounds great!
Hey guys A mate of mine has one of these little units he doesnt need anymore. What do you guys think about it? Have used them in a PA situation with Kick Drums. Not used them on Bass, although they work and sound pretty good. Transparent is the word! PS. What a bargain!
I've just been sold a Samson S.Com Compressor for £30 by my mate who got it brand new 2 months ago and I was wondering if anyone knows if they are any good or not? They retail on the net for anywhere between £140 and £190 (that i've seen). Reason he sold it cheap to me is because he doesn't use racked equipment and got bought it for his birthday so he offered it to me for £30. Not bad Anyyyyyways, yeah, if you have any thoughts on it, please let me know Cheeers!
They look custom made? Might be worth looking at Bob Bradshaw's site - Custom Audio Electronics Site He makes boards for the stars and on his site, shows us mere-mortals how to make them ourselves. Either them or a Tour Supply company that custom makes these sort of things.
Hey guys Can anyone identify what these pedalboards are? Not the pedals, but the actuall boards. I keep seeing the around lately but dont know what company makes them! Any help would be appreciated! Ive got the exact bass they're selling. Although mine is better! haha
I put one on here for a lot less than that and it had no takers (wasn't too worried as it was a mates). I expect ChrisWilliams666 will be along shortly. Not overly convinced by the ownership credentials I have to say...
-
Duff McKagan's old '85 Jazz Bass Special (allegedly)
chriswilliams666 replied to Clarky's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Im not sure this is genuine. I have been a Duff/GNR fan for years as many of you know and can see in my signature. When GnR got there first paycheck when they got signed Duff bought a White Jazz Special, and later a Black One (Possibly given to him by Fender) Any after that were custom made for him by Fender and adorned various stickers on the front which this doesnt show any signs of wear. Another worry for me is that Duff always wore elaborate belts and his guitars suffered a heck of a lot of buckle-rash. This again, shows no sign of wear. The knobs are also non original and not even the ones Duff has on his custom shop guitars. Another factor is that the bass is stated as 1985. GNR formed in mid '85, when Duff played a crappy Yamaha. Duff didnt buy a Jazz Special till March '86 when Geffen signed them and gave them there first pay check... and it was WHITE! I'm pretty sure he didnt get a Black one until at least 2 years after this for the big tours with Aerosmith etc.
Having seen GnR open the 'Maidens show at Donnington 88, very impressed at how a thrown about Duff bass has maintained it's good looks? (Sadly Gnr were s^!*e at that gig)
-

Making your own cables and using wire strippers
chriswilliams666 replied to TDM's topic in Accessories and Misc
I make all my cables and i would definately recommend getting wire cutters/strippers. There's nothing worse then cable-ends in your stomach! This is the cutter i use. Its great and will do all outer and inner cable. - Draper Cable Cutter I would seriously look into Van Damme VDC Site or Mogami Cables (if you can find a supplier) Mogami Site Switchcraft Jacks all the way. I use #226 and #228 Right angled jacks for Pedals and Wireless systems, and #280 for a straight jacks. - Switchcraft @ VDC Site Hope this helps.
