great replies, thanks all, very interesting - I pretty much use nothing, perhaps a Chorus now and then, but not entirely sold on it. I guess I'm most curious as to how much control you have over these various effects in a sound mixed situation - are they monitored into a front of house mix and therefore at a sound man/woman's discretion/mercy?

Was watching re-run of Jools and spotted the bass player's pedal board from Bloc Party - which made me think, if you were putting together a kit of essential effects for a bass player, what would you include? Of course everyone's different, and some don't use any effects, but curious to hear what's in people's armoury...and various makes and models

Also a fan - surprisingly not many comments on the gear used, alongside of course the natural feel of his playing, towards realising this tone. It looks like a modded jazz? The p'ups don't look like regular issue - or are my eyes failing me? From the LM11 I once had, I recall MarkBass also has what I would call quite a dark tone if set flat??

I have 3 band eq on my Basic - VERY responsive - can edge the mids up subtly to change the sound in a quite noticable way

....their necks probably wouldn't be anywhere near as a good as a Sandberg or a Lakland. I've had my mitts on most of the classic range of rock n roll basses - I'm not meaning some of the high high end stuff I could never afford - but 'Rays, Fender jazz and P's, Ibanez, Yamaha, Gibsons, and so on, and I think Sandberg and Lakland beat them all hands down for sheer class, comfort and construction. The 'Bergs in particular are amazing and I think very underrated. Thus ends the Sunday sermon.

Morning: packaged a bass I'm selling - regretting it every minute of the way - yet some weird pleasure in seeing the herd culled. Then work on my MA all day/eve with intention of a quick noodle. Not managed it.
