3.
I've played a few of the P Bass Specials from the '80's that were nice. You know the ones that came with one or two P pickups and the gold hardware and beefy bridge? I don't like the gold so much but the few I've played were quite nice. Here's one
just very heavy! for that reason I don't think i'll ever gig mine but it's sweet - am saving up to get a set up with Peter Allen cos it's pretty battered and needs some love
4. i know - the newer headstocks are such a weird flaw - did NOBODY say anything ? i'll have a hunt for the thread under that name, ta
5.
As some of you know I dont get out much and have a knack of spotting sad things mainly on Musicman basses,The most recent one was the lack of fret marker on the 21st Fret on all pre EB stingrays (and other pre EB's I have not looked?!) Which is a great pre EB spotting tool from a distance and not noticed by some owners who have had them for years,Well there was another thread running recently concerning what we decided to call pre BBE G&L I think it ended on? And how it appears they could be next in line for a following,Get this Leo's been at it again! Early Leo era G&L no fret marker on the 21st again just to make it easy in the future for sad cases like me, He really was a genius! http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/G-L-SB-1-Leo-Fender-...ents_Guitars_CV Strangley I think this is the same bass that started the discussion off last time as I was after an early G & L to keep my Leo era theme going but I was after a P-Bass so it fits the bill,Pre CBS Jazz to follow one day.........
quite like to read that thread - when was it? got a link? cheers

12. Hi all have posted my exploits so far as I determine to utilise a spare Ibanez Blazer body that has been kicking around the loft for years. I actually have a second Blazer which I often gig with that I bought from the US and I love it, so was keen not to let this body go. I pic left. The body came with no neck, but has original brass bridge, and original matt black bakerlite type pickguard. The original pups were in it but I stupidly loaded them into a diff bass which is now gone in a trade for something I no longer have!!! The neck plate shows it's date to be 1981, I believe. The ash body was coated, by a previous owner I'm sure, in a crappy varnish which came off easily and I've now sanded it down with 320 grade sandpaper to its current state. It's got many dents and dings in the wood, but it's an 81 body - and anyway, I sort of like all that. Not so keen on polished perfect condition stuff. BUT, have been contemplating what neck. Anyway, as it's my first foray into this sort of thing I didn't want to spend too much on Fender bass necks etc or even for something like a Mighty Mite neck which is without tuners etc, and then find it doesn't fit or whatever. I'm not the MOST practical of guys and spent a whole term at school trying to perfect a dovetail joint - so all of this is a big deal for me! But I lack a natural confidence. I wanted 21 frets, which is what the original Blazer's have. So I dug out my Yamaha BB-350 (youngest son's learning guitar) and tried the neck into the pocket of the Ibanez body - it fits very snug. OMG - it sort of goes together. It's early 80's meets sort of late/mid 90's - it's an IbYam. I'm contemplating a sort of gun oil finish - using Tru Oil which I know is going to be a marked contrast to the satin finish of the Yammy neck, but we'll see. Also got a feeling the neck might be a little top heavy when playing -perhaps change tuners at a later date. But I screwed the neck on and strung it up this morning, and the action is really impressive, the neck is very true and a joy to play when on the Yamaha. The intonation acoustically sounds good and I raised the saddles a little on the bridge and it seems, acoustically, to sound okay. So next is the pups, which I may go to a guitar tech for as of course it's totally gutted, so where to start!!. Considering a Di Marzio DP122 - as used on someone else's build up the page. I don't want anything too modern or metal. Anyway, so a way to go yet, but essentially I think there's something playable there and all for kind of nothing - maybe £70 ish for the pup and then some more for the pots/jack socket etc and guitar tech's labour of course, but aside from that it's all re-cycled. Slideshow beneath, which right now is pretty darn short but will get back with more as it progresses: http://www.flickr.com/photos/49793253@N07/...751467786/show/
13. hey that looks fab - out of interest did the jazz neck fit the pocket okay on the P bass body - I am tinkering with an old P bass body off an Ibanez Blazer and contemplating necks and like you have done quite fancied the jazz/P combination, but was wondering if the jazz neck is generally a god fit into a P pocket.. ta
14. yeah I'd agree with the synthetic thing
15. i took the plunge and bought one last week - jazz sunburst - tis very sweet no doubt - am doing some recording with it this weekend so that will be exciting. I love it's feel, so easy to use and hold..last night at rehearsal our guitarist asked to hold it and he said it felt so easy like it was very natural - and he's from the other side - sounds: got a sneaking feeling the pups, altho pretty hot, might be replacable at some point. Great honk and great Stranglers bass sounds on the E with a pick and treble and both pups up etc, very punchy also..but I don't know, haven't played it live yet...our guitarist is very loud almost to the point of irritation, but got a feeling the pups might lack some output???? finish/set up - great from the shop, nice action, and with a good string tension plays lovely fingerstyle over the bridge pup, no sharp edges on frets, and fretting is easy taking your fingers pretty much to the sweet spot between the frets each time hardware - bridge feels tight, tuners (altho reverse to the usual) hold tune excellently it's just so nice to behold and oodle away on and the finish is fake as hell but it just does the job so what the hell....got some battered 80's basses and a battered 2009 bass!!
16. there don't seem to be many reviews around for these - music radar did a pretty good one but can't see a lot else..
17. thanks dude
18. sorry guys a quickie, but any G&L guys know what size truss rod spanner I'd need for my SB-2 -it's an early 80's one... 7mm ? 8 mm? it's nestled in the headstock so pretty hard to get a measure over it, but seems like might even be 5 mm??
