I won't attempt to describe the tones too much as I'm still getting used to mine....but its fair to say HH has a much broader palate.....Here's the selector rundown from my point of view... 1. The neck pickup soloed is (for me) the least usable tone. yep it is darker, but doesn't quite have the required bite on its own. 2. The two pups in combination are where the fun starts. The inner coils together retain the bright signature sound, but with the addition of a more meaty more P-like grrrr (nearly said P-ish...I probably am talking pish :-). It sounds killer, and really sets it apart. This is the one for me! 3. All 4 together....mmm not sure. I thought I'd use this all the time, but I think theres too much of the bridge pup in it for me. Maybe the HS version has a better balance? - dunno. 4. The two outer coils give really lively scooped sound. Again, sounds ace - and cuts through particularly well - and a bit different to the normal ray sound 5. (whilst running for cover) the bridge pickup soloed is exactly the same as the single H 3-band version (given usual variables of string age and all that).
yeah i think (number 2) the two pups together is what is what i imagined it might do - thanks for that
Definitely can se the HH being darker on the neck pup...warmer and fatter. Im going for the HS as I like my single coils....and the selector switch with a HS means you can have lots of single coil options as well as the standard H option at the bridge....the S at the neck sounds very P bass like but with that EB sheen to it.
i can see the olly white P going up for a trade at this rate!!
-
yeah can see the HS pov - does that give a jazz bass type option? i'm also wondering about G&L's with the same HH configuration - there's something sweet about a pup next to the bridge that I loved with my old Gibson EBo which I sold - (has there been a thread for guitars you wish you'd never sold, must be!!) - love the stingray drive but thinking if a HH will get me a bit darker -
-
anyone who's played/has one of these, does the neck pup offer much of a darker tone - I have a single pup Ray and am wondering what the HH offers tonally. Would go and play one, but none to be seen. Ta

dunno, something sweet about 1x15 i miss - don't get me wrong, the 4x10's damn fine
-
thanks John - that's exactly why I thought I'd check!!

...have a Fender Bassman 135 - (so not huge wattage) (stated min load is 4ohms) and it will play thro either my Berg 4x10 (4 ohms) or my Orange 1x15 (8 ohms) -power handling on both these cabs is way above the bassman (600 watts and 350, IIRC) - my question is, can I put it thro both at the same to get a 1x15 meets 4x10 mix - just checking re. ohm matching, but also, altho i think not, do cabs prefer to be in a stack with cabs of same make?? ta
I'm unfortunately not going to be able to make it outside of London- I've got 2 days off from work and we're going to be staying one night in Camberley, with one night/one day in London. BUT- I'm not going to Denmark street after all these recommendations for The Gallery. It would have been preferable for me to find a load of stuff in just the one shop anyway, as the Mrs would soon get annoyed by being dragged from shop to shop. I'll hit the Gallery, and see what they have. If I find a bass I like that's a NEW model, you guys are right, I'll have to bear in mind that I can probably get one 'online' for alot less, and will probably walk away if the mark-up is too high, but 'down here' in Cornwall I don't have the oppurtunity to try anything other than Mexican's and Squiers, unless I want a bass ordered in specially. Hopefully going to London will give me the chance to try a few of the guitars that have been catching my eye lately and have a better idea of what I want. There's also the slim chance they might have something like a second hand Jap Precision that I fall in love with, in which case I'll be buying on the spot! Oh, and looks like the best idea for me is to sell the Mexican privately then! Keep an eye on the classifieds!
is Mansons no good in Exeter? Their website always looks reasonable for gear..
My mates on the way to a local studio, trying to get their gear in the back of my old Laguna: http://www.youtube.com/user/deathtrapcity3...u/1/7tTmDLTtL_Y 2 guitars Amp head Stingray bass Full drum kit / hardware / snares x2 Me Band x3 I killed that car.
this is a great vid - all about being in the band and having the crack. Made me smile.
you've got exactly what i had with mine by the sounds of it,i managed to get the volume even accross all 4 strings but the G just lacked any punch. i tried changing strings & messed with the pickup heights for ages all to no avail, but once the Nordstrand was fitted the problem just dissapeared & my bass is now perfect + it sounds a lot better too. (this shouldn't be a problem on a £1000 + bass of course)
you probably said it in this post already, but it's Friday and I'm lazy, where did you source the Nordy pup? got a weblink? I have mentioned this G problem about my MM before, kind of lived with it for a bit - and this week I put on EB flats and the G seems more present, BUT the Nordy might be an idea
If you want something to try out, I have a P copy, unlined, you are welcome to take it for a try out, and I am only in Kegworth, a half hour or so away, I can bring it over.
hey thanks for that, really kind offer - but i think referencing Jerry B's reply I think I should start with a lined fretless - i'm sure it's going to be a huge leap in my abilities so will need as much help as poss!!! cheers re. the Warwicks dmz, I'll have a look
-
meant to say, not really a jazz bass man.. thanks anyway
-
thanks so far - any P bass like recommendations - Fender included but other P bass types..?
-
....not really seriously in the market for one right now, but imagining I had money for good mid range £500-£800 fretless, what do you people rate? Am getting increasingly curious about playing fretless and feel a temptation in my loins.. Ta.
The G&L every time, all the guys i know who have had stingrays have or is looking to switch to the g&l there is no doubt it is a natural progression, and the quality and sounds are better, all the stingrays i have had suffer from a weak G string volume and there is not a dam thing you can do about it, i know we have covered this in another thred. i have just retired my wal after 20 years of abuse and the L2000 is the closest thing in terms of power, tightness, range of sounds that i can get, it does everything with power. the red G&L in the pic is an early one, and i use it all the time now and is the dogs. the dam thing is just ALIVE !! with a slap sound that will pin you to the back wall.
is this the tribute series - or do u have a US model?
Precisions are definitely growing on me again at the moment. I'm definitely moving towards a thicker sound with my wooden basses since the Stingray arrived - I don't listen to a lot of popular music at all, but I love the Precision sound on this... I bought the "Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears" album on iTunes and it's fantastic. Bill Stevenson's sound is amazing!
any thoughts on the rig he's potentially using? valves in there somewhere i think, for a start ?

i imagine it was great but I, we, weren't there - p***k of a drummer has meant two gigs pulled this week, one being last night

Police and Thieves - Clash stylee - lovely

...said to myself on the only other day I shouldn't have sold my Foto Flame MIJ Japan P bass - t'was lovely. Also, in another guitar galaxy (6 string) I had a beautiful natural 1987 Gibson 335 and I traded it for a 73 EB0 bass which I've since traded for something else. I miss that 335 soooo much and was a total plonker.
