I've just bought myself a five stringed wooden necked Energy. Really liking it, but not 100% sold on having five strings instead of my usual four. I've never really got on with fives before (and don't really use the , but I was so desperate to have a Status that I had to have a punt. Hopefully I'll grow into it.

Looking forward to this, and the possibility of seeing Mr Harris playing live in some smaller venues than usual.
Sorry, I'm smiling, I'm alright an everything, it's just this 'Sticking it to the Man' thing that's all. The MAN is just clever image and and a bunch of business minded people sticking it to YOU while making you think you're sticking it to THEM. Just enjoy the music, man, they have to make some cash, and although we all hate being controlled by our 'leaders', unless you are Sad Lover's & Giants' bassist and therefore invincible, you'll probably find it's best that human beings are controlled to a certain degree, don't you think?
Oh there are times I really enjoy being controlled, but that's normally on a Wednesday night at my "special" club -
Please tell me mate, who's 'the Man' ? Is it the Man who owns the venue? Or the one you pay for the tickets? Or the security company? Or the beer company? Or the beer seller? Or the T-shirt cotton-picking company? Or the T-Shirt printing company? Or the T-Shirt seller? Or the sew on patch company? Or the record company? Or the agent? Or the marketing company? Or the guitar manufacturer, Or the drum manufacturer? Or the cymbal manufacturer? Or the lighting manufacturer? Or the steel company? Or the welding company, Or the cleaning company? Or the potato grower? Or the crisp manufacturer? Or your denim and leather manufacturers? Is it Clarks? Is it Levi Strauss? Is it Iggy Pop? Is it John Lydon? Who the f*** is 'THE MAN'?
Isn't it all of them . Chill out dude, it's just a turn of phrase. What's with all the hostility? Thought this was a light hearted thread? -
Oh, maybe after this sort of thing happens http://en.wikipedia....oncert_disaster
Granted, that was a very nasty situation, but all I'm saying is that when you look at all the rules that have to be followed to put on a show these days, it kind of takes away from romanticism of rock and roll being about "sticking it to the man". I've always wanted my music life to be an escape from the rules and regulations of everyday life, not an extension of them, but I guess that's just what needs to be done in this day and age to put on an event which is safe for both those working and those attending. And yeah, although I'm not a huge fan of either McCartney or Springsteen, I do think they do it for the music rather than the money. Both are so rich that they would never need to work again, so if they don't need the money, why would they bother? Would McCartney even have been paid for his guest appearance on Saturday? -
Why? These are inclusive family events in a public space, they need to be controlled properly, safety and security are important.
Just because I still like to believe that rock and roll is all about not having to follow the rules. When did music have to get so serious? -
Having been involved in drafting use agreements for major concert venues, you'll find it has a lot less to do with the so-called local "miserable bastards" residents objections to noise than it has to do with concerns for the safety of attendees and working time regulations, for venue custodial and security personnel. Timings are carefully coordinate with local policing provision, and usually set to allow attendees safe and ready access to local public transport routes and hubs in order to leave the area afterwards. Yes, of course, noise pollution is a consideration, but it is by no means the primary consideration.
And I thought it was all just about rock and roll! I feel that after reading this, a little piece of me has died:[ -
Just noticed that there's already a version 2.0 upgrade to the guitar version of this pedal which allows you to use six effects together by allowing you to scroll the screen, rather than three as before. Anybody know if this will be available on the B3 anytime soon? http://www.zoom.co.jp/products/g3/

First up is a Crate BT100 I'm putting this up as semi-working, but it's not really as bad as it sounds. On the whole this is a pretty decent sounding amp, the onboard eq gives quite a good range of sounds and it's built like a tank though the downside to this is that it's bloody heavy. It has a built in tuner which I've found works well, and also features a built in octaver which works fine I guess if you're into those types of thing. There is a cd input, headphone out, mute button and a -15db setting. It also has a seperate distortion channel which I've never been able to get to work properly (keeps cutting in and out) and a foot pedal to operate this. Apparently loads of people have had problems the distortion so I guess this is a common fault. Awhile back I started noticing a strange background interferance noise coming from the amp. It happened totally randomly, and would normally disappear after a few minutes. I was never able to find the source of the problem, but the other day the same thing happened on my new amp, so although I can't say for sure, it's possible the problem is actually down to one of my basses/pedals/leads/external source rather than the amp. Because of this I'm asking only £45 for this beauty. Full specs can be found here http://www.crateamps.com/pdf/manuals/BT100_OM.pdf Next is a Fender Rumble 15w. This has a cd input, headphone out and a 3-band eq, but is missing it's kettle lead. Nice and simple little amp. Not mint, but by no means bad condition and worth every penny of the £20 I'm asking for it. More detail here http://www.musiciansfriend.com/amplifiers-effects/fender-rumble-15-bass-combo-amp Sorry, no posting on these.

I'd love to see a "Mod Of The Month" feature where a reader could submit their own modified bass for review, along with a discription of the modding process. Could also add a small how-to guide each month showing how to carry out a different mod to your bass. This could be done by buying a cheap ass piece of crap bass, modding it over the course of twelve months, then giving it away to a reader in a comp. Also, can we have a "Skankdelvar's Thought Of The Month" feature. The guy's posts on here are brilliant!

Bought a bass from Dan. Everything went very smoothly and it was a real pleasure to deal with him.

And shop owners wonder why people buy online!
I'm spoiled for music shops Mansons in Exeter is only half an hour away and Axe Music in Axminster (great name for a guitar shop)is only minutes away. It is tiny and only stocks limited bass gear but keeps it interesting with some good used gear which rotates fairly frequently. It's the centre of the music scene down here. Andy has played in several of the local bands, mixed for others and helped out most of us at one time or another. He's great with kids coming in for a first instrument and advice is given freely even if no sale is in sight. What he does well is getting hold of the bits and pieces you need in a hurry that other places don't keep in stock. Saturday mornings the place is a bit of a social centre for musicians. We found our drummer through a small ad in the shop too. Al these shops struggle because of the restrictive practices of the manufacturers like Gibson and Fender who require shops to stock their whole range which means a £60,000 investment, way beyond the means of all but the big boys. Its as if they have decided for us we aren't going to be able to try before we buy or purchase from someone who can offer after sales service. Unless you live in a major city you have tho use the internet for a lot of gear.
Wasn't aware of Axe Music, will have to have a look see next time I'm passing through. -
Anybody seen one of these in the flesh yet?

I honestly don't mind paying a bit over the top if it helps keep a decent shop going (never know when you might need a set of strings or a cable at short notice) but sometimes the savings are so massive by shopping online that you can't really ignore it. I do always phone the local shops first though to give them the chance to get my money, guess I'll just be phoning one less from now on. -
Been thinking about getting hold of a Zoom B3 multi fx unit so had a phone around my local shops today (I like to spend my money locally if I can) to see what price they could do one for. First shop were very apologetic, "Sorry, we don't deal with Zoom, but feel free to bring in your bass and try the Floor Pod we have here." Which I thought was a decent enough attitude. Then I phoned shop number two. Me - Hi, do you stock Zoom pedals, I'm looking for a B3? Shop - Yes, we are authorised Zoom dealers, but have none of their gear in at the moment. Me - Ok, well what price could you do on a B3? Shop - Not sure, like I say, we don't have any here. Me - Well would you not be able to order one in? Shop - Not really, too much hassle to order a single unit and I don't really want to order in a load of their gear just now as it's probably a £500 minimum order. Me - Um, ok, I'll try somewhere else then. Thanks anyway. Shop - Click, beeeeeeeeeeeeeep (Hangs up without even a goodbye) Guess I won't be using them again.
Heh - I'm painfully aware of that, believe me. I use skype-to-phone to call my parents in Italy, and Thomann at any available opportunity, and it's much cheaper than using a landline or a phonecard.
Maybe I should look into this Skype thing, don't really know much about it.
I've said it before, I'll say it again - if you have a problem or a query, call them, don't email. They are incredibly efficient on the phone but very slack on the email. And yes, they do speak English, some even natively, as some of the operators tele-work from other European countries, including the UK.
To be honest, the reason I didn't phone was because I have no idea how much it costs to phone Germany and didn't fancy getting a big surprise phone bill. Anyway, it all got sorted in the end, and knowing what I know now, I'd probably still use them if the price was right, just be a little more prepared for any issues.
