1. Nice cover....feels like the drummer is a wee bit off every now and then though, somehow his crashes aren't landing quite where the rest of you are. Good stuff though!
2. Hi, Just a suggestion, but what I would recommend doing is getting this to a shop that will sell it for you on commission. I'm of the opinion that it does look a bit overpriced 'on paper', but of course we can't assess how well it plays and sounds from the ad here alone. If you can get it hanging on the wall of a decent shop that won't stiff you on commission, then you know that if someone comes in and plays it, it'll fetch what you what (or near, factoring in the shop percentage). Just trying to help, but it could be the way forward for you if you wanted to sell? Cheers, James
3. Add to that the fact that PA stuff has pretty awful resale value unless still covered under warranty, I would be wanting to pay much more than £600, budgeting for the assumption it COULD have been ragged to within an inch of its life. Of course, it may never have been outside and turned up past 2 on the master, but it's always hard to be sure. I know of a chap that spent £1k on a used setup that was in theory worth over £4k - very nice gear, but despite looking pristine he was landed with two units requiring a re-cone and one blown tweeter. Sigh.
4. Hmmm, I'd be thinking perhaps Ashdown MAG series for the head and then consider something brighter than their stuff cab-wise? And run it through an EQ pedal? I've never really 'got' the Trace sound, for me it has never fit with what I'm after (stupid low-end) but I've heard many Ashdown players extract GREAT tones out of MAG series stuff and even better from the ABM. I have to point out that I had some awful problems with Ashdown gear, but have know players that have had nothing but good stuff to report.
5. I've owned two of these in the past. Korean and Japanese but NOTHING to do with the 'JV' series guitar, built later around at the early 90's and often with plywood bodies. Still, they were good basses, both of them, but cheap ceramic pickups, poor electronics and the aforementioned 'plywood' laminate bodies on both of mine. Good for oddity value, but not the investment a JV is.
6. Just curious to know if anyone played K-Fest yesterday on Lowestoft South Pier? I was holidaying nearby and caught a few bands early on...really enjoyed myself and loved some of the music! If anyone is local and didn't attend - try and catch it next year. Seaside, beer, music and a hotdog for £2.50 - what could be better? Cheers, James
7. Go DIY! Alright, it's not the 'easy life' option. But I decided what speakers I fancied (Fane Sovereigns) and then found an enclosure that would suit them, according to WinISD. In my instance, I was able to reuse some PA cabs that were pretty much perfect and only cost me £30 off the 'bay. Like I say, it's not a quick win - but I had a lot of fun doing it.
8. If you can dredge my original FS thread, you're welcome to reuse the pics.... Cheers, James
9. Hmmm, I'm increasingly realising something: I like LOUD, clean (ish) Bass but beyond that? I really don't care! Having owned a truckload of basses, all with the intention of landing on what I define as MY bass, I've ended up quite far from where I left off, but what I'm realising is that as long as it feels comfy enough and stays in tune, I could care less about the inherent 'tone' that it throws up. Where it's at for me is serious speaker-age throwing out the sounds with enough power to make listeners evacuate themselves. Everything else, for me, just isn't really of much importance. Oh dear. Shall I remove my account?
10. Hi TDM, Lovely powerful amps, but I'll pass thanks...! All the best, James
11. Sod the bass...big cabinets with 15" speakers (with bucket loads of Xmax) and big power to drive 'em. I can bring down small towns with my two Fanes
12.
Bought some strings, quick delivery and came with a Yorkshire pudding recipe
Try it, it's a belter. Handed down from generation to generation of the Moos3h family!
13. Yup, collected it from him on my way to a wedding C'mon peeps!
14. When you say 'gone' - what do you mean? There's three possible factors here: 1). Faulty valve - possible. Depends on where they were sourced from and what testing was done 2). Faulty or incorrectly adjusted amplifier. What the bias set correctly (if applicable). If so, then it could be a failing part in the amp is supplying a wildly incorrect voltage at one point in the valve and that's enough to cause issues. 3). Misuse. You've largely ruled this out, but be warned that's how they'll try to get you. I'd talk to the shop, very friendly but be armed with all the relevant information - keep it factual and pleasant and you MIGHT find they will replace the valve in question or at least take a look. Any decent amplifier technician will be able to carry out the required tests. Cheers, James
15. Sod the value, do you prefer the other bass? If you're asking, am I making a silly move financially, then the answer is YES if you don't like the other bass - just because it's older doesn't mean much and ovation are not a brand with much of a following when it comes to basses. However, if you prefer it, then it's the right thing to do if it makes you happy. Also, I'd be surprised if a jazz couldn't do a decent job of the genres you list, but something with either a MM pickup or maybe even a Precision would perhaps be a better bet? What amp(s) are you running? In my opinion the amps and cabs choice are crucial, almost more than the bass itself!
