2. The chap who plays with Fall Out Boy has a lovely tone.
3. Hi all, Now surplus to requirements, my good condition GK Gallien-Krueger 300w Backline 600 is now for sale. Only minor marks from load-ins at gigs, but full working order with no damage to speak of. *** Trade Pending *** Cheers, James
4. ...that it does and with earth shaking power! They don't call it a terror for nuffink
5. Si, I take your point about how it works, I'm under no illusion that advertising revenue is largely how these things are funded but conversely when circulation drops, advertisers will become less interested, it's a symbiotic relationship and a balance should be struck. Naive? Possibly, but I still don't believe I owe anything to the mag to struggle through pages of the same stuff that doesn't appeal. I apply the same thing to their choices of gear to review. They aren't going to please everyone, it's impossible. They'll lose me as a customer, pick up some other guy and carry on regardless. No-one will be losing any sleep over it. Cheers, James
6.
Eurgh, I hate that expression. Puts me in mind of Daily Mail readers who, through some twisted evolution, have lost their ability to switch off the television. Flip the page man, to Melissa.
...but when you've paid for those pages, and they are increasingly irrelevant, then you're only choice is to cease to pay for those pages, no? I'm not trying to strike up social change, just explaining one of the main reasons I increasingly find BGM a very dull read.
7.
Why? Because it's professional and there's a lot of it? Nothing wrong with spending money on decent marketing to help create a sustainable business. They are brilliant instruments too, with proper quality control.
But when something is rammed down your throat as much as Warwick stuff is (the guitar mags are the same, particular Guitar Buyer and Guitar mag), it gets a little wearing. Don't get me wrong, no problem with their gear although it's not really my bag, but I agree with the other poster that too much advertising can turn you off a product. Cheers, James
8.
Bear in mind there is no need to 'match watts', impedance (ohms) is the important bit.
True, but I've found with my experience of the BF Compact that it wants more power than my GK can give it. As a result, it sounds really quite poor at gig volumes, it's not the cabs fault per se, it just needs more beef! Cheers, James
9. I won't be renewing my subscription I'm afraid, I just don't like the fairly elitest feel the mag has. It may not be deliberate, but given the large amount of beginners, bedroom warriors, weekend gig pirates and general non session-playing musos why does every issue have to be so dry and 'pro' feeling. I feel like I'm reading a trade publication when I read it. Others may find that good, but I find the lack of variety and dry done rather dull. As much as I detest the price and free coaster with every issue, Oyster House should pay attention to what Guitarist are doing. They've made that magazine readable again.
10. I found this issue really dissapointing. Just my opinion but too many players I have little interest in and not a big enough variety of gear. And somehow the mag feels like a Warwick Brochure. Those Germans obviously have a decent marketing spend!
11. Don't listen to these snobs - do it! Get that belt sander out and give it hell!
12. Thanks guys, some interesting reading - I think my accountant has mentioned some of the stuff that's here, but because I'm only a glorified weekend warrior, there is some stuff that I think would be pushing it. The good news is that this year, I've been investing in the PA a bit so I do have quite a few receipts for big bits of gear which I've bought, so I can't see me making much, if anything! Cheers, James
13. Hi all, This will be my third year of having to submit a tax return, largely because I have done other jobs as a Photographer which I have received payment for. However, I also declare the meagre gig earnings (about £50-60 a pop for the weekend pub gigs) which totals less than a few grand spread over the year, inclusive of some functions which crop up every now and then. I'm hardly making a fortune from this! My accountants that help me with my return have historically helped me include receipts for the obvious, basses, amps etc. but what else can be included? I claim for petrol too, to and from the gigs. I really don't want to take the mickey, as I believe if you mess with the Inland Revenue, they'll mess with you in return - I want to be straight with all of this, but likewise if there IS something that can be written off quite honestly, then it'd be nice to know. Any of you guys in a similar position? Cheers, James
14.
can't say I particularly desire any others at the moment though, but then I don't really look.
Get out. James
15. www.giggear.co.uk have them too - one in stock at the Harlow branch.
16. Personally even if you budget for a good setup, then yes I think these are better value for money than the Mexican Standards. Lovely guitars
17.
Of course, your friend could always pop over to Sherman Oaks and buy something expensive from the legendary [s]loudmouth[/s] e-bay seller 'tune-o-matic'. Then kick the crap out of him and take the money back. Plant the talcum powder (remember that?) on his lifeless body. Drug deal gone bad. Entirely plausible. Hey Presto! - Everyone's a winner!
You sir, single-handedly brighten up my day!* Cheers, James * Not gay slang.
18. The neck/body joint is flawed too - take a look at the pics from the original auction listing.
19. Whatever it is you go for, make sure it has some decent high end. As you may have discovered, and depending on your bass to a degree, the Bass Terror is quite a dark sounding amp, if you're coming from a Trace, you'll miss that high end for sure.
20. Hi Mike, Thanks for that - unfortunately through no fault of your bass (looks a peach) that really wouldn't leave me with enough of a cash adjustment to make much of an impact on my debts for the car, so I think we're probably not going to be able to trade on this. Thanks!
21. Hi Mike, Any chance of pics and more details re cash adjustment etc? You're not that far from me so you'd be welcome to come and take a look if we got a deal agreed in principle. What's the neck like on the Ibby? Cheers, James
22. Sorry matey, I can barely cope with four strings! Thanks anyway!
23. Would also consider outright sale at £500 (including hiscox hard case as of Tuesday) but would really prefer a p/x!
