1.
I have been trying some flatwounds on both my basses. I have used Roto's Monal Flats and Roberts Flats. The Roto's 45-105 I found too tight and was tempted to go down to 40-100 but at nearly £30 a set I might wait. As for the Roberts the A-D-G seem ok but the E was too floppy and sounded some what dead. My next stop is probably going to be some Roto Solo55's preasure wound. I don't like steel strings they sound too zingy for me but nickle plated seem ok I have used Rotobass 45 & 50's in the past. They sound like a played in set of steels but slightly warmer and you can slap with them (if thats your thing).
I had the same problem with Roberts strings, the E was dead as a dead thing on dead day. To their credit i gave him a call and got a replacement E string and a complete new set. Still bloody dead E string though.....
 2.
Someone message him and ask if he'll end the auction early, just to see if he explodes.
Already have AND asked for pics. Might pop round and see him if he is local......Can then test the gear AFTER asking if he has any leads......
 3.
Anyone had experience with this guy? Steve Robinson www.manchesterguitartech.co.uk ..he's on Hampster's list. Have had quotes from both him and Ged Green and also a list of what's included in the price. Mr. Robinson is offering more for less... just wondering if anyone had dealt with him before?
Sparky, I have used Steve for a few years now. First when I played 6 strting and now for Bass work. I can thoroughly recommend him. First class work and not that expensive. In fact I have a Bass waiting to go but can't send it until the back-up arrives, (today I hope...). Last job i had done was routing the body of Fender Jazz for a battery box. Looks factory fitted.
 4.
Not quite as cheap (or even a Status) but some very nice brand new 5-string G&L's with flight case at the BC for less than 400 notes... on another thread somewhere by OutToPlayJazz
Just got the last one. Thanks for the Heads Up. Apparently they are now discontinued.
 5.
Groove 5? I was sat watching it thinking "I really don't need it but it does look a bargain". Only two bids though (neither mine - sanity prevailed) & a cheap price on the face of it even though it had been flagged here. I suppose it depends on what it is, whether you re really on the look out, and whether it really is that early Fender no one has cottoned onto that you might want to take a speculative punt on - like someone we know around these parts!!
Correct WM. It was the neck that put me off. The bend at the END might not come out with a truss rod tweak. The guitar tech i normally used agreed with me. Might be OK, Might not....
 6.
Has anybody seen or used this? http://www.myus.com Seems like a way to control your shipments or buy stuff from the US from people who won't ship to the UK
Nice one John and here is another solution from the Money Saving Guru. You get your own US address. http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/shopping/best-buy-usa#web
 7.
256 quid. Jesus, THAT is a bargain.
Certainly looks it. The neck worried me. The "bend" appears to be at the nut end of the neck and not in the middle as you would expect for a quick adjust of the truss rod. It may come out with a bit of patience and an allen key. On the other hand...... Mind you it would be a stunning bass with a Graphite Neck....
 8.
I think it's fair enough if there are no bids and hardly anyone's likely to want it, but encouraging multiple people to bid on it certainly detracts from the idea of it being a bargain... that said, if someone is only prepared to pay a bargain price and someone else is prepared to pay more, why shouldn't they be informed..?
I think most people in that situation would probably wait until the last minute to bid so the logic of that argument escapes me. If an item is listed on e-Bay let's say very badly and in the wrong place and you spot it. No-one is bidding because they are looking in the Bass Guitar section and this is in Guitar Amps. You have a chance to bag a bargain and then suddenly it is announced on this forum. Suddenly the world and his wife know and a bidding war ensues. This isn't about what you are prepared to pay, it is about the fact that you have found the listing by being creative in your searches. Why should anyone else benefit from that.... Now I may have a biased view as somewhere in this very section is a posting about a MM Sub I "bought" only for another scrote of a BassChatter to offer more for it and take the sale. I would have happily paid more for it as I know the value, but it didn't have a reserve and mine was the highest bid. One of the comments on that posting was, "Well it went too cheap".....and that is why i got stiffed. Yes it did, but I spotted it and "bought it" for that amount but didn't get the candy. I have no issue with BIN sales or highlighting rogue e-Bayers. Rant Over
 9. Hi, I have an Ashdown ABM115 Neo For Sale. I found out who makes the cabs for Ashdown, Trace, Cornford, HiWatt, Sound City and some more. When Ashdown changed the handle design about a year ago they had a couple of cabs with the old square handles sitting around. They put a Celestion 15" Neo in it for me, (400 Watt), and I also asked for a horn to be put in. Sound really good. It doesn't have Ashdown Badge, (because they would get in trouble), but is the real deal. It has had little use and is pretty much immaculate and quite light for a ported 15" cab. The guy i dealt with told me Ashdown are now using Jenson neos in their cabs and in his opinion the Celestion is better. The genuine Ashdown version seems to be about £600 I paid £250 for it less that a year ago, (the speaker cost over £100), but would let it go for £175. I also specified Speakon sockets rather than jacks. I also had casters fitted. Have some pics if you are interested. Send me your e-mail address. Cheers,
 10. Completely agree and I think this has been raised a couple of times. Pretty sure I will end up backing out of an item tonight because of this very issue.
 11.
I only have one bass-StingRay 5. No more 4s!!! +1 the Peavey comment.I once had a Peavey Fury V with flame top, double humbuckers and active circuit.I think I paid 200 or thereabouts.Bass Guitar Magazine did a budget 5 string roundup a few issues ago, might be worth traking down a back issue
Issue 28 of BGM had the "5 String Shootout". Fender MIM Jazz 5 came first, then Yamaha BB615, Ibanez BTB555MP, Washburn Force 5 and then Vintage Advance. There is a thread around somewhere about SX basses. They apparently offer unrivaled VFM and even importing from US they are only just over £100 and can be "pimped up". As someone who has been in the same situation as BT, I got hold of BassJamm's defretted Peavey 5 String. Decided to see if I could get on with a fiver and fretless. Fretless IS an issue at the moment, but I am not comfortable with a 4 string anymore. Took my Jazz to a recent rehearsal and was lost without the B string. My only bit of advice would be to try and get a 35" scale 5 String. I had an Ibanez SR905 for a while and as stunning a bass as it was, the Low B was a bit "floppy". Have now got an MTD and the difference is amazing. Just shows what an extra inch can do (Ooo Errr missis)
 12. I was somewhat taken aback by a comment from the Drummer of the corporate band I play in who was at last nights gig with the "pub" band in Warrington. Steve has drummed all over Europe and also been a session drummer at Strawberry Studios in Stockport. He mentioned to Mrs BB that my playing has improved dramatically since I started lessons with Nick. In his words, " He really looks comfortable with the bass and his improved technique shows in how relaxed his playing is now." Can't thank Nick enough for his efforts so far.
 13.
Gone as could be, to the nice gentleman with good taste in Spain.
Glad you found a buyer Dave. Knockout basses If it hadn't been for the shipping costs it would have been sitting next to my Kingston Heir right now.
 14. Great Deal. I can vouch for this one as well as Jamie. It's a crackin way to explore 5 string and fretless and Sug isn't making any money either as he got it from me. Hell of a nice guy as well.... Got beaten to the ACG by the waySug. But something tasty may be in the offing.......
 15.
hello from a fellow manc
Hi from another Manc. Must get around to introducing myself
 16.
Nick's been my tutor for several months now and he's really brought my playing on no end. He's a top bloke and deserves a big fat yellow bassist recommendation from the donut man.
+1 from me. I have been seeing Nick for a short while now and he is excellent. He doesn't have a set format and works out what is needed by listening to you. My playing has improved dramatically.
 17.
We'll see and believe me, the decision won't be taken lightly but after nearly four decades of gigging, it's starting to wear a bit thin.
And you can't have all Nick's good work going to waste
 18.
Retiring?
Don't do it Alan. I know exactly how you feel and the gig situation is pretty depressing sometimes. I seem to be carrying one band and the other is like yours, "No New Numbers, Rehearsing is a Joke and lack of organisation/comms". Trouble is since managing to take early retirement, without something band related to get wound up about, don't know who the hell would get the fall-out. Probably end up riding shotgun with MRs BB when she goes shopping for shoes. I am probably getting out of one of the outfits, but have something else on the boil which could be realy good. Change of faces and musical tastes can work wonders.
 19.
The GK1001RB has gone
Bummer, was just about to go for the Grumpy option.
 20. DD, Where about are you situated in this fair land? Could be interested in the GK1001RB if it doesn't cost an arm and a leg to get it to Manchester.
 21. After "selling" this beastie within an hour, the buyer changed his mind. So back on the market.
 22. +2 . Yep Rayman has it pretty spot on. Excellent venue. Fabulous organisation but I agree on the content of the acts. As a seasoned musician, (albeit most of the time on Guitar until I discovered the "Dark Side"), I appreciated what was going on. But there is just so much you can handle. There were however, some young bass players there who have just started playing and it would have been nice for them to see/hear a wider range of styles. Lawrence Cottle was excellent and it was nice to see a unit with a sax featured. Star for me has to be Jeff Berlin. Lost his Bass and then lost power after the first number. Quickly turned it into a clinic and had some good jokes as well. The consumate professional. Bond was pretty awesome as well. God knows what we would have been in for if he had brought all his kit...... Dave Marks lecture should not have been missed by anyone. Some excellent advice, nice guy to talk to and although he was stating the obvious, it does need stating. Had a nice chat with John Shuker and looks like I am off to Sheffield next year to build my own bass. Something i have wanted to do for ages. Hats off to the organisers. An amazing amount of time and energy gone into the event and can't wait for the next one. Even got a free Rotosound T shirt and a set of Elites. More than covered the ticket cost.
 23.
I put this up for sale a few weeks ago and got some interest but no firm offers so here goes again. It really is in very good condition and is very versatile in its range of tones. It comes with a hard case. I'd be looking for about 600GBP for it. Ian
Ian, where in our fair country are you? Also is it 34 or 35" scale? Cheers, Stuart
 24.
Hi All, Three or four weeks ago, about an hour and a half into our usual two hour rehasal my left forearm cramped up, I got pains in my left had and it too cramped up. I last had this when I first started playing with another band about ten years ago and was very nervous and tense. This time I had problems sleeping that night due to the throbbing and tingling pain in the ends of my first and second fingers on my left hand (fretting hand). I thought it would happily go away but a couple of days later the numbness was still there. My wife cheerfully said it sounded like what a colleague of her suffers from Carpel Tunnel Syndrome. Next day I was round at the doctors having all sorts of pins dragged across my fingers and palm of both hands. The doc said it was not the dreaded CTS but I had damaged the nerves in the ends of my fingers and would have to stop playing and allow them to fully recover. So no band now for four weeks, fingers getting better and I can play a few tunes without problem. Tried my acoustic guitar today for a change and ouch! End of finger problems back. Has anyone had similar problems with nerves in the fretting hand fingers? I'm getting bored not playing but I don't want to cause permanent damage. Any thoughts or advice gratefully received. Geejay
There was an article about "Aches and Pains" in July/Aug Bass guitar Magazine. Have scanned the part on CTS which gives some good advice. Cheers, Stuart
 25. Have agonised over selling this for a while. When I bought my LMK2, this was to be my back-up but I already have a suitable reserve so here we go. British built, (one of the last before the production of Carlsbro gear went to China), and built like the preverbial. Fabulous sound. Have attached the user manual, so all the detail is there, but briefly: 400w into 4 Ohms 7 Band Graphic, Effects Loop, Speaker Mute, (for tuning). etc, etc. Still have the tags which say it has a 2 year waranty and is currently just over 1 year old. Hasn't been used for the last 6 months. In pretty much immaculate condition. This was a £500 amp that IMHO rates alongside Trace, Ashdown, Marshall etc. Looking for £165. PM, if you need any more info.
