hey all, Im having some trouble deciding what to do with my double bass. atm i play a cheeeap laminate double bass what I play live every single week in a duo called The Nomads, the bass is amped using a Dave Gage Realist pup, a Fishman Plat Pro preamp pedal, then in to a markbass amp. now how much difference would it make using a better bass with a solid top, or solid top back and sides for that matter. the bass i use is a big orange box! i have found a late 50's cech lam bass that loooks awesome, but it just sounds the same to the one i have when recorded with a condenser mic. so my question is would a better bass improve the sound using the set up i use? i know through a mic it would be better but i rarely need it for that. so if a better bass doesnt improve the sound then i might as well get this 50's laminite bass that doesnt look like a orange box and go for looks. slightly confusing lol let me know what you think. many thanks Pete

songs for an acoustic duo.

bump? -
Hey all. I have just put together an acoustic duo with a double bass. The thing is i dont just want to be the guy who plays deep notes in the back, as the other half is the lead vocalist and acoustic guitarist. So im looking for songs eith a good bass line. Stuff like love cats seem to go down alot better than songs with a simple follow aling chord stucture. Any suggestions on songs? Thanks Ps. If you wanna check out our duo, search for The Nomads in facebook or go to www.facebook.com/daiandpete
fellow BC'er mr Bassman very kindly let me borrow his Plat-pro but i didn't really get on with it very much & prefer to use a Boss bass eq pedal instead. both do boost the signal strenght as both have an output volume control but if boosted too much then feedback becomes a major problem.
i have just bought a markbass minimark to combat the feedback. -

Coop, would you able to do me a massive favor Hector? Can you please try it in an amp with the fishman and with out and let me know the differences? Thanks. Pete -
Sure, it seems to. The EQ allows you to adjust your tone, but I tend not to use it too much. The unit provides a hot enough signal for my uses: on doubling gigs, I use my upright through the fishman into the effects return of my amp, and then my electric into the regular input - a combination of the gain and volume controls on the preamp allows me to bring the acoustic up to a similar level with the electric, and then I can switch quickly just by pulling one cable out and popping another in. Minimum fuss! As already mentioned by Jake, the phase switch is really useful, but my personal favourite aspect is the depth knob - my bass can get a little boomy in some rooms, and having an adjustable HPF helps combat that flexibly. It doesn't have lots of bells and whistles like some other pres, but it's got everything I want and it fits in my gig bag.
so does it cut through drums and stuff like that? just worried about it being the right buy. there is a definate boost in volume then? anything you can say about it? thanks
