Hi All I have an Orange Bass Terror, and its pretty good, but a bit lacking in bass when compared to my Ash***n ABM 500. Is there any way of re valving, or changing components in the pre amp (valve) circuitry to make it more bassy, and perhaps less dirty/gainy. I have the gain on 10 o clock with the button preset to active, even though using a passive Precision (usa 1981) or Gibson Ripper, and thats about as distorted as I need Over to you

Gibson Les Paul Special with Bartolini pickups & electronics
I played one of these at the yorkshire bash today, it belonged to retroman, and it played and sounded surprisingly good!! Just thought i'd throw that in there
I played the very same bass round Retromans today, and yes, its great sounding, and 'feel' of a really top quality solid, bass, IMHO better than the Thunderbird, and certainly better than the arched top later Les Paul basses. Though I still love my Ripper, me being a maple lover rather than mahogany. Ps Retroman is a top geezer as well as having great basses :-) -
To anyone whos seen Spinal Tap, its obvious, The EVO goes up to ten, the EVO II is really EVO 11, and is one louder???

Hey Mr Bassman Could I enter the 'closest to the venue' competition, i'm from near the milepost on Leeds Rd!! On a more serious note, will anyone have some lightweight cabs to try? Rich
-
Yeah, I thought it pretty nuts its that light, so its probably going on a vintage 1983 Ansells mild beer towel, see if that helps. Ps Thaks for that incisive comment, happy jack. The amp doesnt have a black knob marked master, what black knob were you lookin at?

I've just bought one of these (Got PMT in Leeds down to approx £420 with 3 year warranty) terror heads, used it for fist time at gig/practice with drummer volume tonight. I eventually got the tone controls right (Treb 2, mid 7, bass 5 assuming 12 to be straight up position). Its pretty good, but too light, as it fell (vibrated) off the top of the cab onto the floor, bending the jack plug as it landed. Unbelievably, I didnt notice for 30 secs or so, as it kept working fine, so build quality must be ok!!! Not sure how to stop this happening again, any ideas?

I'm a definite P bass man myself, and thought my 2003 USA P bass (43mm wide nut) was great, until I got my hands on a 1981 USA P bass, with a 45mm wide nut. On a steady rehearsal, it seems ok, comfortable, but when you're on stage, hot lights, big loud noise, sweat and moving about, its really great to have that space between the strings. Or is it that i'm just a sweaty slob handed 4 stringer. Now when I try a jazz, it seems almost like a toy bass (with all due respect, no slight intended), those strings are just so close together its almost unplayable for a minute or two, and 5 stringers are just really cumbersome as well!!!!

Bought a Fulltone bass drive from Alex today, and his service is exemplary, from paypalling the money at 7pm Sunday night, he had it boxed in fantastic packaging (brown packing paper/strong cardboard box/polystyrene filler/original fulltone box/bubble wrap/pedal)!!!! It was then posted the next day, email sent with full tracking link and details, and arrived as I requested 48 hours later, well in time for rehearsal and gig this week. I haven't had any better service from any retailer, and would obviously recommend him.

Ibanez Musician basses, one fretted one fretless
Bassman Rich replied to vmaxblues's topic in Basses For Sale
Just to add to the pricing debate, I bought a white mc924 fretted one in early 1984 from scheerers in Leeds, I was too awestruck and nieve to bargain them down from the £428 price tag. Its been ok for a while, but I now play a 1981/3 Fender P (wide neck one 45mm nut) which cuts the mustard, and would have been cheaper to get a new P in 1984!!! -

You could email me on if I dont get back to you by saturday, as i'm on holiday for a week. Regards Rich -
Blown speaker Ashdown EVO 500 1x15 Combo
Bassman Rich replied to Bassman Rich's topic in Amps and Cabs
I got the 3015 eminence fitted last night (bit of a bugger of a job, the hole needed enlarging in the cab) but thanks to all who suggested this, its sound is absolutely superb, clean tight and detailed, then growls snarls and punchy when the amp gets dirty, no more wooly ashdown!!. Just perfect, thanks guys -
Blown speaker Ashdown EVO 500 1x15 Combo
Bassman Rich replied to Bassman Rich's topic in Amps and Cabs
I took the plunge and ordered a 3015 from Blue Aran, hope to get it tuesday, so I'll let you all know how it sounds. That link (http://www.audioloudspeakers.co.uk/main.shtml) when followed to the speaker repair site DC Boulton, sounds like a guy I used in Bradford in 1984/5 ish!!!I hope its the same guy, he did me 4 x 15" speakers, I think they were old chassis from fane who went bust and he bought them as a job lot, he then added his cones to, and he did them for £20 each. When fitted in some old HH 2x15 bass cabs, they sounded great, powered by a 1973 Marshall Artiste 50 watt valve amp. The amp had really bad reviews for guitar (too clean) but was great for my bass, but those cabs were just too big to lug around, at one stage I had one in the open boot of a Triumph Spitfire, hoping it wouldnt bounce out over a bump, or get nicked if I had to stop in a dodgy area. The amp powering the 3015 is the Ashdown Evo abm 500, so should be powerful enough, and I know there's plenty of asdown knockers around, but mine is a series one and sounds great, they didnt even get round to writing a serial number on the back, so I'm guessing its a fairly early one, long before they upped sticks to china. -
Blown speaker Ashdown EVO 500 1x15 Combo
Bassman Rich replied to Bassman Rich's topic in Amps and Cabs
Thanks guys for all your input. Bill/Musky, Re Too small cab, its about 60 litres internal, and ported, so just within the spec for the eminence (Vented 51-144 liters/1.8-5.1cu.ft. ), and as ashdown want £85 plus £10 shipping plus vat, ie £109.25 for their blue 250w speaker), i'm more than tempted to go with Thormann who will do the EMINENCE KAPPALITE 3015LF at £109.97. The cab sounded fine before it blew, and I don't use 5 string or octaver, so real low down performance isn't the priority. JTUK, Yes the combo thing isn't ideal, so after a couple of years lugging the heavy combo about, I bought a sleeve for the amp to turn it into a head and effectively separate 1x15 cab, just turned the grill/logo round on the cab, so it now looks like an 'amphead' sized port at the bottom of the cab, and for big gigs when not putting bass through the PA, rig up my old (1997 I think) Marshall 4x10, which again sounds pretty good to my ears. I phoned some guys in Keighley RMJ Loudspeakers (http://www.recones.com/) who quoted £48-68 for a recone, but they didn't sound too knowledgable on the phone, they hadn't heard of ashdown! Could you supply the details of the recone guys you are using now, please? Thanks again to all of you for your input -
Help!!! I need a new speaker, having taken the original one out, it is an 8 ohm 250 watt sica (www.sica.it) speaker, to stop it blowing again, could I fit a 400 watt celestion instead, as at 8 ohms that should cut down the power from the amp (500 watt at 4 ohms) to under what the speaker can handle. Or is the cab too small to handle that type of speaker.
