Osmosis. I listened to so much mainstream jazz when I as a little kid I could hear where lines "ought" to go from memory. Odd - never really thought bout it until someone years ago asked me how I worked out "those walking bass lines". My Dad used to occasionally run dances in the 1940s and 50s at a place called the Headstone Hotel, Headstone Drive in Wealdstone, so I got to hear a LOT of jazz!

Hah that Tina Weymouth clip reminded me of Lee Cave-Berry. She had a Burns Baby Bison bass that was her first bass (and still gets aired occasionally). She joined a rock and roll band which was doing opening act on a Fats Domino tour and the band leader insisted she either buy a precision or put a precision pickup on her Burns. Interesting mix with a P split pickup between tow of those Burns pickups! Anyway - looks like I was way back at the tail of the line with my 1983 P/J even if it DID have one of the very earliest EMG sets on it. Often wondered what a Gibson EB2 would have sounded like with a P bass pickup added. Another friend - John Gaulter - had a wonderful gibson thunderbird bass with a precision pickup added. Lusted after that for a long time but he would not sell....

Without wishing to knock anyone else's opinions, I think you need to "get" all the subtleties and little musical references and also the (for want of a better description) puns and jokes in their stuff to really appreciate it for what it is. Steely Dan and all its variants have always struck me as being inspired heavily by that period in between the older style jazz stuff I grew up on and the "new" bebop movement. And don't forget that you are listening to the creme de la creme of musicians being urged (and in Michael McDonalds case wound up ) to excel by Becker and Fagen. I suppose it all hangs on what your definition of "perfectionist" is. I tend to think of it in terms of getting it right. Sorry - this turned into a bit of rant, didn't it?

Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee............................................. BOO! -
1983 for me. But in fairness that was me adding a J to the P myself. Susepct it is a LOT older than that. Too easy to do.

Worth mentioning that if you really know your scale intervals, you are halfway to learning the Nashville Numbers System. A huge help if you are working with a singer who needs to sing a song in other than the written key. -
bass biscuits - I`m beginning to wonder if this isnt the future for me too. Plenty of small cafe gigs in nearby Cambridge... Did they provide a PA or do you have to take your own?
A quick search on YouTube brings up several versions
Sadly none of them are the first version I ever heard.

If you like the sound of resonating plywood..... oops - "resonating MDF" -
"Vinyl sounds sh*t after shellac...." *sigh* Then we will have arguments over whether blackthorn is better than chrome plated steel for needles.

Alien: playing a bass that is tuned all wrong and has six strings. Are they called fretwiddlers rather than gitwristing on your planet? P.S. Just realised I missed a "t" out of the original post! Sorry - that was a bit confusing wasnt it?

Them and Peavey. I got my first (and only) Peavey amp that way. Used it for years & then sold it on to a pupil in the UK when I decided I was not going to b playing bass at gigs any more (yeah right!) I don't know how many of the Gibson or Peavey users in Nashville are still getting them free, but certainly in the early 1980s they were practically giving them away with the morning milk! -
Funny - 1 sounds like he is the more accomplished player - not because of all the slappy bippy sh*t, just because he seems more attuned to the groove, but 2 has a better grasp of what is going on in the tune for my money. Off to listen to the original and see who got closest.... I'll be back. Yep 2) Hands down. 1) Needs to actually listen to what the rest of them are playing instead of showing his ass. Sorry if this offends anyone but I actually find that sort of "look at me I'm a Youtube star" stuff irritating.

Does he really look that much like the offspring of a frog and a bag of rusty spanners in real life?

Before anyone asks, NO there aren't any of my early recordings on there!!! P.S. Didnt find "Barnacle Bill The Sailor" either. Shame. I would love to find the original version of that. Had it on a 10" 78 when I was a kid.
Not shorscale but it might be worth looking for a Steinberger Spirit. It's just about the smallest bodied bass out there, pretty light too.
Cheaper and available used would be the Hohner equivalent cricket bat. A pal (weighing in at a portly 22 stone) has both a four string and a five string and is on the lookout for the guitar version! Plans to screw them together as a three neck. Weird bloke.... But the basses are light, well balanced and if you hunt around a bit not at all expensive. -
Give them a call & see what you can get them to agree to. Hard to see how you can be accused of amp abuse unless there is evidence of beer spillage.

Ford Mondeo Diesel Estate. I'm on my third one! Apparently soon to be added to the Endangered Species list. I will be hanging on to my current one for as long a the law allows. Gear shifting heaven in both senses! saw my original one in the next village last year - I sold it at 265k miles, it had 350k plus on it!!! Shoulda kept it... Current one has only done 135k so getting nicely run in. -
Ambient - this is all very new to me. I have never been the front man in a band before. Hence the reason I asked for opinions, but with 3-1 in favour of getting the gig first, looks like that may be what I need to do. I may well be recruiting a bass player as I will be singing and giwristing, so anyone on here in the Cambridge area that's interested give me a shout. But I have a feeling that getting a good reliable drummist will be hardest.

The band split up in about 1990, I returned to Europe & Rudi/Rowena became a Wiccan. She also wrote a best selling (well, on Amazon) fictionalised version of the Arthurian legend & now has a band again, touring and doing festivals. Saw her last year briefly & she seems to be doing fine. Nice lady. Everything I did out there, including this track, was done on my free-gift-from-Massman-Drive bass, which is their take on a P-Bass. Explorer shaped with a precision split pickup. I added a jazz pickup and switched the passive pickups for one of the earliest EMG P/J sets. 1983 or 4 I think. Still got and use the bass.
