Yep - it is the usual differences between oriental and USA builds. A friend has a tribute ASAT and I have a 1990/91 USA model. To the eye it is hard to tell the difference but as soon as you pick the USA up and plug it in the differences leap out at you. Both sound and refinement of playing experience. Sad that with so many people buying tributes there are not that many "proper" G&Ls about to give people ths chance of actually hearing and feeling the difference.

Unbelievably, people are still trying to defend the 80s.
Personally i thought the 80's mainstream music was the worst decade ever....but been an old fart born in the early 60's i was privileged to have been brought up on some superb bands and music the late 60's and early 70's music was just a brilliant time to be around.
Hm. I was born in 1944 & the whole of the sixties was a mixed bag - an awful lot of the seventies was positively dire and/or self-indulgent. You should have been around in the fifties if you wanted exciting music. We were suffering through the early Billy Cotton Band show era and then all of a sudden in came acts like Tennessee Erie Ford, Fats Domino followed by the early rock and rollers. Talk about " and now for something completely different".... AFN and Luxembourg turned my world around. -
80s at its best imho!!
Any excuse to give Mr Blackmon another boost. first saw them late night on MTV when they dressed up in Miami Vice style pastel coloured "cool" suits - love the sound but not the look. Then came the second album which of course blew everyone away. A very talented chap indeed. -
FWIW. Is it a 61 or a 62? Seems to be a typop or some confusion going on here And I actually owned a 62 Precision that I bought in 62. Also played several others both new and old over the years. I now have a USA 62 reissue. I was looking for a neck that closest to the very wide incredibly thin one on my original 62. The only one I found that came close was my buddy Mark iN Nashvilles 62 tcb rosewood board which even thirty odd years later was incredibly close to the sound and feel of mine. Once you discount the historical player connection, whilst they were kinda mass produced, there is a vast variety of different original rosewood board 62 P-basses out there. Some I have played I wouldnt give you $50 for. For exzample, Rich Wright of the pink floyd had a 61 stack knob jazz bass which, unless Guy Pratt has had some major surgery done on it since Rick died, was the biggest dog I have ever played from that era of Fender production.
You will never beat the bonzo dogs intro!! https://youtu.be/hcrUuCDFLOQ
"Big Fat Bubs from Cambridge" was a lifelong pal. Played guitar in my second band but sadly passed a couple of years back from cancer. Great guitar player.

According to my hearing "expert" you can only appear to reduce the sound coming from the rear since they only have one mic. And to be truthful I cant hear any difference at all. And I have noticed that when wearing them in noisy environments like restaurants if I cup my hands around the back of my ears, the background noise is massively reduced and sounds from in front of me are far more intelligible. I am now working on a set of mechanically operated mini-hands to do the cupping for me when needed. As soon as I get it set up, will post crowd-funding details on here.

Hate mine. I ripped off the plastic moulded bits when I first got them and found the results a lot better with just the tubes. Cant wear them to record or mix in the studio and as previously stated NEVER wear then at a gig. My big problem is that I am -70 in left ear, -40 in right ear and most of it up in the treble range. My NHS kit is provided by the local specsavers, who dont appear to be aware that there are alternatives to the usual moulded plug ones. I may have to go back and bug them to find me something better - left aid is playing up anyway. Is it me, or is the biggest problem with the cheap aids that they amplify sound from behind you MORE than sound from in front of you?

Bass Playing Listening Test - for my PhD research
ivansc replied to EvilSmile's topic in General Discussion
(grin) RESPONSE not responce. I have to say my answers were probably skewed because of my arthritic hands! slap is agony to play these days. -
Let me guess this particular store is to the eastern side of central London? If I am right, it is run by the 2 guys who brought the franchise over from Australia in the first place. They probably have enough money coming in as franchise fees that they aren't hurting.

You are lucky! I just got booked (Saturday) for a wedding in July. The guy who booked me is er shall we say slightly musically challenged but we go back a long way, the rest of the impromptu band are good players and I like the guy. Did I mention the money is OK? Asked him what the bride and groom were expecting of us music wise. "Oh just my usual stuff - you play mostly guitar and sing, I will play bass apart from on any hard ones & Richard will do guitar and sing on the rest. "by the way they have two requests for songs they really want us to do. "Alice" and "Take it easy" I HATE doing Alice even without the Chubby Brown additions and a four piece band only 2 of whom can sing doing a full on Eagles song??? And of course we apparently wont need a rehearsal. Cant believe I still let myself in for this stuff at my ge!

And that is of course exactly how it should be dealt with. So for all of you who claim that CC are a bunch of crooks and routinely knowingly handle stolen goods, I am an ex CC manager and we ALWAYS wound up losing whatever we had paid for anything that showed up stolen when the real owner came in and claimed them. Part of the franchise training is on how to spot fraudulent sales/pawns and short term loan items. Regardless of what you think, it is VERY bad business to buy in stolen goods, or even stuff that you think might be. One classic that comes to mind was a manager in Dunstable who lent a customer £100 on a Mesa Boogie Mk IV amp many years ago. He called me when the guy didn't redeem it 30 days later to get an idea of how much it should sell for. Co-incidentally I had just received a list of stolen goods taken in the last couple of months, including this amp. Someone had stolen the owners Jag, set fire to it and stolen all his gear out of the boot. The guy did get his amp back, but not his guitar - a PRS - and Dunstable were out £100. I don think the toerags were ever caught, even with name address and positive ID.
Although to be fair, in 1961, many 'rock'n'rollers' were, indeed, 'not proper musicians'..!
You were there at the time (like me) then, were you? This comes over as somewhat patronising, mate.... Taking age into account, just about everyone I worked with at the time knew their way around their instrument and more importantly "got" the importance of playing together as a group. YouTube bedroom experts take note.

And in any case it is a dead easy part. It sounds like this could be a fun gig though.

Help with Live sound and home studio survey
ivansc replied to KingPrawn's topic in General Discussion
Probably a coincidence but I just got one of those RED SCREEN A-HOOga!!! Disaster!!! You have a virus that crashed Defender!!! things after completing the survey. Three finger salute and ending the google chrome task gets rid of it if anyone else gets the same. Oh and FWIW I already have my ideal interace as analysed by the survey! At least this allowe dme to confirm that I bought the right thing! RME Babyface, if you are interested.... -
Forgot to mention that when I moved to Cambridge in 1961 the Cambridge local had a motion tabled to exclude rock and rollers from membership " because they werent proper musicians". Happily, the OTHER Syd Barrett was the chairman/president/whatever and being a very nice old guy (also an upright bass player) he vetoed it.

Anybody else receive 100 points from D'Addario?
ivansc replied to TheGreek's topic in General Discussion
OK I joined and got 100 points! Couldnt find any double bass strings on there. I already use D`Addario flats and half round/ground wounds on my bass guitars & would love to use them on my upright. -
I now have this guy in the channel islands who will do the DC connector on a bare motherboard for 30 GB Pounds! Havent used him in a while, so it may be a little dearer now though.

I was an MU member back in my teens and always thought it was a good idea - till I had occasion to seek their help with a couple of dodgy situations - mostly with a couple of agencies. Bloody useless. I wound up thinking that the only thing the MU were interested in supporting were the pit players, orchestral players and film/tv players. Dumped my membership and never been back. "Keep Music Live" is a great old slogan, but they seem to think it only applies to the elite few.

DB5 right on the money! And with my arthritic hands' getting those low positions working is a must! Falling in love with this wild and wacky thing more and more, especially after my unfortunate experiences with the flying pencil (Stagg) which I could never gt to sound like anything I liked. I may have to ask for tips over on the DB section as I get a bit more adventurous up the neck....

Thought of using a Baritone string? Mine is a 30" scale, so you could probably find one that would work.
The Mrs has an HP laptop. The fan, situated at the corner clogs regularly with cat hair. The downside is to get to the fan, you have to take the whole laptop apart to get to it! You have to take the screen off too just to get the motherboard out. Proper crap design that takes ages. It's been done 3 times in the time that we've had the laptop & it now resides in a cupboard, replaced by a macbook.
About par for the course. I have worked on a LOT of laptops and none of them are that easy. Worst thing is having to change a surface mounted DC input socket. Pain???? You want to talk about pain?????

Forgot to mention that this is one of the tiny Bassix Jazzas - I sold my Stagg to buy it. I also lent it to this incredibly cool French lady bassist from Nice last week... I will try and post a photo of her playing it. Looks way cooler with it than i do! Hope this works.... https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10155067992621351&set=pcb.10155067992891351&type=3&theater
