I finally got to see the documentary on his life on Saturday. What a sad, tragic life, assuming the film was truthful. I already respected the man's talent and ability, but this film made me feel like I had undervalued his musical contributions immensely.
I'm not normally a fan of Both Kinds of Music, though I've enjoyed Hank Wangford's take on it!..... barely a tune in sight, then it gets all melodical. Bit it's about the aural assault, the feeling:
Squished your post down a bit - You are up on the good Dr. then? Had some hilarious moments playing gigs where they were on the bill! Sadly he is apparently an over the hill old relic like me and doesn't do much any more. Aural assault, eh? I thought people went to gigs/concerts to enjoy themselves. Personally if I want aural assault I generally go to a football match or similar. Agreed there IS probably a niche audience for that sort of confrontational stuff but what I take issue with is the point at which it splits between someone like Zappa, or Parker, who could do it... and the wannabes whose reach far exceeded their grasp, starting around the time of folks like Ornette Coleman. This is also a large part of the reason people like me cringe when rock and roll players decide to become jazz artists. You can count on the fingers of one hand the number of "fusion guitarists" who can actually pull it off. Bet you are a Derek Bailey fan, aren't you? Incidentally, don't get me wrong, you have your preferences, I have mine & far be it to suggest that you are wrong to like this [s]leaden crap [/s] "special" musical artform.

I do offer mates rates when selling stuff, but only to my immediate circle of friends & then only the ones that I both REALLY like & who I suspect are not as comfortably off financially as the rest of us.

I found Alan via linked in. Pretty easy.

Country music is also a very broad church. How do you feel about that stuff? Elevator music/Kenny G has NOTHING to do with jazz and never has. Come to think of it, on listening to your example about I got the distinct impression that this was some decent players with a sax player who felt like he had to put in irrelevant atonal squawks from time to time in order to be taken as a serious jazzer. Mor smoke and mirrors but at least there is SOME musicianship in there.
A friend offered me his Sonar Platinum. Any love for that?
Read my earlier post about Sonar and reaper and studio One. If the Platinum is free, grab it and give it a try. It is currently my saecond choice. Just read about the "you cant sell or give away Sonar" and yeah - I suppose if you want to take it online you will need your buddy`s registration and password for Sonar Command Center. And you will have to keep to it. Could cause problems when cakewalk email HIM about what is now YOUR DAW unofficially. Just get the reaper demo. If you like it, it is only $60 for two whole upgrasde versions from what you buy. And the version you get is the same as the $200 professional user version.

Am I wrong in wanting to learn the set/songs properly?
ivansc replied to thebrig's topic in General Discussion
You might think, why don't you find a new singer, but good singers are hard to find, and he really is good when he is at the top of his game, but he is very inconsistent due to his lack of effort.
Singers who don't play an instrument for some reason seem to be inherently workshy. No idea why, but this comment is based on working with a LOT of "I just sing" types. You either learn to live with it or move on. -
Great Gig, Great Crowd, Great Business $$, But We Don't Want You Back

Ideal situation is always deliver promo stuff personally & at the same time try and engage thje LL or club manager/owner in the promotion. Or at worst stick the posters on their wall yourself. There is one club in particular that insists on using a really crappy photocopy of an old poster of ours from way back before I was bass player - 6 years and counting - different drummer and only one vocalist out front instead of two! Platyingf there this saturday & I guarantee that same damn photo will be up in the foyer. -
I am so glad to see a lot of what I think of as jazz in this thread, rather than the usual lame "fusion" stuff that seems to be widdly rock guitarists wearing serious expressions playing everything starting on the "and of 1", prefereably in weird meter and with very little reference to a discernible melody. My heartfelt thanks to the usually silent majority!

Shame - they were one of my guilty pleasures when I lived in the USA.

I moved from Sonar to Reaper at around version 1.xx when Sonar 8.5.2 started playing up on my machine. Although I still have a current Sonar 3 licence I havent really looked back since switching to Reaper. However if you are looking for something that "just works" but makes you do things the way IT wants you to, probably Studio One, which I gave up on at version 2.6 Audacity will work if all you want is absolutely basic no-frills recording software & might be a good-ish place to start, but you ARE going to want something better/fancier pretty soon I think. Reaper is especially good if you have never used any other DAW software before, as you won`t have all those habits from the previous software to un-learn! ...but I spend way too much time posting on the Reaper forum, TBH. Should be making music. Be wARNED!

im curious, any thrash players on here?
ivansc replied to winterfire666's topic in General Discussion
Anyone know the words to that last one? -
Hm. Recording is generally when you find out how crap your timekeeping (and intonation on UB or fretless) really is. Nightsun: You are obviously lucky enough to be blessed with a band that plays in time/tune consistently! I currently have four tracks to put a bass line on with no count no tempo information (because it varies horribly throughout) and suspect tuning between keys and guitar... Are we having fun yet?
I don't know if Bassix are still in business, but their New Tech EUB looked pretty cool and cost closer to £1k
Spoke with Alan recently and he is back in business! He also said he still has spares for most of his earlier basses.

Log in trouble ? Help ! -MODS YOU CAN DELETE DUE TO IDIOT ERROR :)

Only if you have a fixed wheel, though. -
Bearing in mind the pretty much total ignorance of other musicians as to what a fretless can be made to do, why would they even think to advertise specifically for a fretless bass player? ...unless it is for something like a Paul `n Pino trib band....

White weird and wonderful. Fits in my baritone's gig bag and has a great sound. If I can figure out how, I will get some piccies up.

Dood - the reason I bought the big butch steel thing I have is that I gave up on the one that you have. broke two of them under differing circumstances & after replacing the last one with another sliding aluminium one of better quality and having that collapse and die, I decided to go for big and butch. FWIW I have now moved four fridges three washing machines a heavy duty petrol generator and a ton of other stuff in addition to my bass kit & my PA with no obvious wear and tear. Sincerely hope you are less clumsy and more lucky than me.

Daughter just bought a manfrotto tripod made specifically for video work. Seemed well enough made, but EXPENSIVE!!!

OK, this is a possibly weird question about gigging...
ivansc replied to Telebass's topic in General Discussion
When Mrs. Terrible was about seven months into carrying our daughter, the band I was in at the time played a gig & whilst Mrs.T. was in the bathroom she overheard two "ladies" discussing my ass and what they wold like to do with me. Cue "ahem" says obviously very pregnant lady "but that is my husband you are drooling over" Big red faces from the two girlies and my wife smugly amused. But to keep to the spirit of this thread, she stopped coming to gigs a looong time ago, unless I am working with someone she likes. -

My favourite pub gig closed as a live venue years ago,but was a cracker. Minute "stage" area but always a good crowd & never any issues with the landlord. Wednesday night was his night off, so he only ever booked bands HE liked. Result was that if your face fit, you had a guaranteed four or five gigs a year there, well paid and with a couple of drinks thrown in. Sad day when he decided to retire and sold the pub. We miss you, Gerry! -
I had to stop playing bass for four years when my metacarpals started seizing up. Funnily enough, I was still allowed to play guitar and sure enough the problem went away eventually. Mind you I now have bad arthritis on both hands among other places. Bloody hate getting old.
If you want poetic, what about They Might Be Giants, with "Birdhouse in Your Soul." Even the title is poetry, the song lyrics are wonderful.
Only song of theirs I ever liked but it IS a doozie.

Briefly delivered milk to her and her Mum in Cambridge many years ago.... If only I had known then, etc.....

Tabs, lyrics, MIDI files.... there is some right old dross out there, isn't there? What is so sad is that people actually DO copy them and then find out it is totally wrong - too late.
