My latest stage shirt came from here: https://www.voidclothing.net/ Also had some shocking jeans from the likes of Run & Fly brand via Amazon. Shocking as in really shouldnt be worn by someone my build & age
Cue Johnny Depp and the Deps.
Equally, there is no 'has to buy' about it.
Abslolutely! exactly my point here. No guns are normally held to heads. And of course the true market value of anything is what a willing buyer is prepared to offer and a willing seller is prepared to accept. (Sort of paraphrased from my schoolday economics classes!)
I know that she has made a few claims to have played iconic Jamerson lines but I'm not too sure what to make of that business.
What I make of it is that James Jamerson is dead & therefore not around to contradict anything she or anyone else says. And of course you can bet your life that with his history of drtug and alcohol abuse, you would ahve to take a fair bit of what he "remembered" with a pinch of salt. As far as I am aware Carole didnt start working for Motown until they opened a "branch" in California, which at least gives us a bit of a temporal context.... "Shrouded in mystery" is the phrase that comes to mind.

What do you need to get that "killer slap" tone?
ivansc replied to Gunsfreddy2003's topic in General Discussion
What sort of gig was it? I have become vaguely interested in this aspect of bass thrashing of late and just wondered if all the woodshedding had led to financial reward for anyone on here. Mind you at my age I rather doubt I have the look that most bands "doing" slap style stuff eould be looking for, although I did do some dep work for a rather splendind Glam Disco band last year. They were somewhat disappointed when I said up front that I didnt slap or tap, so probably no bass solos would work better than me making a horses ass of myself! Funnily enough, just hitting the groove was more than acceptable & I got asked back. One reason for me asking the orioginal question. -
You are thinking about this from a sellers point of view. There is no "has to pay" about it, unless your bass is genuinely a one-of-a-kind and the buyer HAS to have that exact instrument. Not too many deals done like that. When I bought my 62 Precision it wasn`t the first one I looked at.
I've seen audio cassettes come and go. And 8-track cartridges (remember them?) and Betamax and VHS and Laser Discs and MiniDiscs, and DAT tape, and CDs and DVDs.... the only medium I wasn't around to see the introduction of was vinyl. I'm not THAT old.
I tremember the very first 45 and 33 records coming out. My first singles that I bought were all 78rpm
You just reminded me that I once got fired from my OWN band over one person deciding he didn`t want to play anything anyone else suggested.... and then one day he suggested quite forcefully that I leave if I wasn`t happy with that! As I left, with a big grin of relief on my face, the guitar player followed me and whispered "you bugger! You engineered that didnt you?" I didnt, honest! The culprit was the drummer - and one of HIS song choices was "Rocking Robin, btw. In a sleazy southern blues band.... *sigh*

We also have the veto system in place. The world is full of music, so why play tunes you don't like playing? We're all too old for that. Having said that, I'll withhold my veto if there's something the other guys really want to do and it doesn't make me cringe too much. And when it all comes down to uit, prices quoted on stuff for sale are generally the sellers most optimistic take on what he hopes someone will pay. Anything being sold is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. Sadly an awful lot of sellers think that just because THEY want a certain price, a seller HAS to pay it. (heh:)

Out of curiousity I dialled up the original of that track and with the original bass player doing it, it works beautifully. Shame about the dude thrashing through it on youtube. He doesnt even LOOK comfortable, does he?
A vote for the Trace GP6 Kevlar 2x10 combo, whatever they called it 7210 or something like that. But the sound I lusted after was always the SWR Redhead 2x10 combo. Hernia belts came as standard...... LD
OOOH YEsss! First time I tried one was at Corner Music in Nashville. Blew me away. And then I saw Tim Drummond use one with er um I think JJ Cale (Jim Keltner on drums) at a small venue and the sound was indeed fantastic. Experienced my first Pedulla fretless around the same time and couldnt afford either!
Tony Maimone of Cleveland art rockers Pere Ubu. Check out Humour Me from The Modern Dance album from 1978. Great melodic playing and not too flashy.
Toured with them back in the late seventies - the whole band was really impressive. Sadly not much going on with any of them these days according to David, the singer.

O.K. Suit yourselves. It WAS a genuine, serious question though.... -

Just out of curiosity, do any of you guys actually make a living playing slap & nothing but? -
Gotta say I got the shock of my life when I returned to the UK after 11 years in the USA. I was lucky enough to work in a band doing their own material (two singer songwriters with great credentials and contacts in Memphis Mafia and Nashville S/S circuit) but also played a bunch of bar and party gigs with some very good players. When I returned to the UK all that great AOR stuff I had down pat was totally unknown in the UK! Hall and who??? Oh yeah, them that did Maneater. Plan B was swiftly adopted (learning a whole bunch of stuff new to me!) It really is a very different scene. In the pubs the standard is generally pretty abysmal & although the standard improves once you move to the Social Club circuit (think VFW) the pay and the level of professionalism with regard to presentation goes up accordingly. Not necessarily the playing ability. For some reason British bands on the local circuits near me seem to find it hard to play as a group and further the song rather than showing their butts all the time. Covers band is not a term I hear bookers or landlords bandying about much but think about the Confederate Railroad`s "we cant us original songs, less`n they bin done before" and you have it about right

Buy adjustable strap. Set length to suit. Ask wife/mum/significant other with sewing machine to stitch strap permanently at that length. Easy Peasy AND it is undo-able if you shrink or expand.

Doesnt seem to have occurred to them that an easier solution might be to suggest that the member of staff with the hearing problem figure out their own strategy for reducing the problems caused? I know we are supposed to be all-inclusive, but I am hearing impaired and often struggle to hear un-amplified public speakers even with my hearing aids. Maybe I SHOULD stand up and shout "SPEAK UP! we cant hear you!"

A friend chose "WA*KER" for his ride in California but got told it had to go once someone in the motor vehicle registration department found out what it meant. Being an Ivan I always wanted 1VAN but apparently Jeff Beck has that AND 2VAN 3VAN and probably all the rest..... *sigh*

1980s were good too and now much cheaper. Peavey Combo 300. I finally sold mine to a pupil after 25 years of sterling service in the USA, France and finally the UK. It is still going strong.
Two 100k pots and a footswitch in a metal box, less than a tenner!
Either this or the chinagraph option get my vote for Best Answer.... Or you could buy my deluxe multi instrument/amplifier switcher (hand crafted by me) for £999.99. It actually has *relays* (grin)

(grin) Turned up at a session yesterday with my charts, preamp, favourite cans, leads....left the bass at home! The only one they had in the studio was this wesley jazz copy with just the bridge pickup. Left behind by a guitarist and never reclaimed, apparently! After re-fitting the A string (wound the wrong way and jumped out of the nut slot all the time) I used it to do two 50s style rock and roll tracks. A ballad and one that moved. Same experience as you - turned the tone full off, volume 3/4 up and it worked for both songs. Nobody was more surprised than me! Maybe we have all been looking at it from the wrong perspective all these years!

Thanks for the tips! I am getting ready to buzz off to France again so no time to experiment and no room to take it with me. Shame...

Extra bang for your buck from more costly basses?
The down-side of buying used is that at all the instruments you buy are those that someone, at some stage has rejected it. So, they are all, to some degree, someone else's mistake. Al lot of us do OK with those though.
Or (in the case of at least one instrument I own) the owner died. Or (insert umpteen other possible and plausible scenarios here) -
Just to bring this up to date, I am now a one-upright man - the real one is sold and I am now wrangling the Stagg, which turned out to be the regular version, not the deluxe. Shame but like I said, the price was fair. I do have endpin rattle and I also cannot gt the action as low as I would like without the growl being overbearing, plus of course I have the thumping banging ang clanking complained about by everyone else. BUT. It takes up almost no room at all in my tiny studio! Yay! I am off to france and cant fit it in the car so remedial work will start when I get back. Sounds rather nice through my markbass little mark 3 and a pair of 10" neos though. Plenty of (maybe too much) thump.
